BRM Reviews Evolve 13

Evolve 13 (5/12/2012)- Concord, NC

FOUR-WAY MATCH FOR A SHOT AT THE DGUSA OPEN THE FREEDOM GATE TITLE LATER TONIGHT: A.R. Fox(3-1) vs. Jigsaw(1-1) vs. Ricochet(4-2) vs. Samuray del Sol(0-1)- 7.25/10
Johnnay Gargano joined Lenny Leonard on commentary for this match.
Everyone else worked over Fox, who was coming in weakened from last night’s Evolution’s End match against Sami Callihan. Fox overcame this and won a match with a lot of flipping going on. Fox cut a promo saying he would continue with his momentum and win the DGUSA Open the Freedom Gate Title in tonight’s main event.

JOHNNY FAIRPLAY PROMO- pointless
He told us that he is with the Scene (which we already knew), and that they sometimes double-team chicks together.

SILAS YOUNG(3-1) vs. ADAM PAGE(0-2)- no rating, good segment
Silas took a cheap-shot at Page to start things off, and pretty much squashed him after that, winning rather quickly via knockout from mounted punches after hitting a bunch of big moves.

LENNY LEONARD INTERVIEWS SILAS YOUNG- good
Silas is the “Last Real Man in Professional Wrestling” and we are going to see similar aggression out of him in the future.

KYLE MATTHEWS(0-1) vs. CALEB KONLEY(2-1) (w/Johnny Fairplay and Amanda)- 6/10
The back of the jewel case has a typo on Konley’s record, recording it as 1-1 instead of 2-1. At the end of this match, he was 3-1, picking up a nice, solid, clean victory.
Chuck Taylor was on commentary for this match.

JON DAVIS PROMO- very good
He says it doesn’t matter how good last night’s match was. The fact remains that he lost. Tonight, he says, he cannot lose.

JAKE MANNING(1-1) vs. ALEX REYNOLDS(2-0)- 6.5/10
Chuck Taylor remained on commentary for this match. Reynolds’ push continued, as he won a solid match here. There was a pretty bad botch on a dive, but Manning did a great job of reacting ad covering ad trying hi best to sill make the spot work. The crowd did not like the local boy losing, even though he was the heel.

SAMI CALLIHAN PROMO- awesome
He’s talking to himself again. He recognizes that he has been losing a lot. He accepts that he lost to A.R. Fox, but realizes that he needs to put his hatred for Fox out of his head now and accept that the feud is over. He is still stuck on wondering whether Finlay is right (that Sami’s issue is that he is full of himself and that is preventing him from reaching his full potential) or wrong.

LOW KI(3-0) vs. JON DAVIS(1-2)- 7.75/10
The story here was Davis’ power against Ki’s striking ability. Davis put up a great fight, but Ki got the win, becoming the first man to ever make it to 4-0 in EVOLVE.

LENNY LEONARD INTERVIEWS LOW KI- good
Ki put Davis over on the mic, a sharp contrast to his words of rebuke for El Generico and Low Ki. He also says that EVOLVE needs to have an actual championship belt to fight for.

MIKE CRUZ(0-1) vs. CHUCK TAYLOR(7-3) (w/the Gentleman’s Club)- 6/10
Taylor won clean while still not taking things too seriously. Unfortunately, the crowd loved all of his antics, which was the opposite of the reaction they were supposed to have.

LENNY LEONARD INTERVIEWS CHUCK TAYLOR- fine
If there is going to be an EVOLVE Championship, Chuck wants it.

SAMI CALLIHAN(3-5) vs. EL GENERICO(0-2)- 8.25/10
This was a showdown between two men who knew they couldn’t afford to lose, and they did a great job getting that across in this match, ramping up their desperation and determination as the match went on.
Low Ki was on commentary for this match, and did a great job just picking apart these two wrestlers who dedication and ability to succeed he was criticizing.
POST-MATCH SEGMENT- GREAT!
In the usual post-match interview with Lenny Leonard, El Generico started to respond to Low Ki’s comments about him, but he was attacked from behind by Sami Callihan. Lenny Leonard was aghast at Sami’s violation of EVOLVE’s rules. When the referee tried to pull him off, Sami put his hands on the referee as well. Low Ki came from the commentary table to get Sami off.

DGUSA OPEN THE FREEDOM GATE TITLE MATCH: Johnny Gargano(c) vs. A.R. Fox- 7.5/10
This one was pretty spotty. Just lots of big moves targeting the head and neck from both sides (plus Gargano’s Gargano Escape). It was enjoyable but nothing too memorable. I appreciate that they had Lenny Leonard tell us that if Gargano loses the title tonight, Chuck Taylor will get to face Gargano in some other stipulation match as compensation for the original stipulation he wanted against Gargano (a DGUSA Open The Freedom Gate Title match at the next DGUSA weekend of shows) would no longer be possible.

LENNY LEONARD INTERVIEWS BOTH WRESTLERS- fine
Johnny put Fox over big, then cut a big babyface promo including bringing a child with special needs into the ring who had written an essay about why coming to wrestling shows made her feel good.

AFTER THE SHOW, JON DAVIS IGNORES A REQUEST FOR AN INTERVIEW… AND LEAVES HIS BOOTS AT THE VENUE- Symbolism

HYPE VIDEO FOR THE NEXT STYLE BATTLE- fine

This was another good show from EVOLVE in the ring, but the storylines just aren’t compelling, and the biggest angle in the company- “Chuck Taylor is making a mockery of things”- is backfiring. Not so good.
