BRM Reviews CHIKARA Faded Scars and Lines

CHIKARA Faded Scars and Lines (6/27/2010)- Cleveland, OH

GAVIN LOUDSPEAKER SINGS- He sang. Nothing interesting happened.

PLAYER DOS vs. TURSAS- 3.75/10
This was the usual Tursas stuff from around this time. He’s big and strong and never leaves his feet. The babyfaces gets a sport or two in where they get him jelly-legged and we wonder if maybe this will be the time he goes down, but he doesn’t. Tursas won with the big diving splash, then did another splash after the match just to be mean.

THE COLONY vs. DA SOUL TOUCHAZ (w/C. Red & Dymond)- 6.5/10
Fun trios action. Da Soul Touchaz follow up last night’s upset win over the BDK with a win over one of CHIKARA’s most established stables.

3.0 PROMO- Scott Parker was good, Shane Matthews…clearly partook in some recreational gimmicks.

3.0 vs. F.I.S.T. (Chuck Taylor & Icarus)- 4.25/10
3.0 won a short match, pinning Chuck Taylor, cleanly after the finisher. Johnny Gargano, who had been calling Taylor the weak link in F.I.S.T. (seemingly looking to take his spot), came out on the ramp and smirked at the finish.

JOHNNY GARGANO PROMO- good
He says that unlike Chuck Taylor, he won’t choke tonight.

PLAYER UNO vs. JOHNNY GARGANO- 5.75/10
Gargano won cleanly. On his way to the back, he looked into the camera and said “that’s how you do it, Chucky T.”

TEAM FRIGHTNING (Mike Quackenbush & Frightmare) vs. DIE BRUDERSCHAFT DES KRUEZES (Lincé Dorado & Pink Ant)- 6.75/10
Good stuff, with Frightmare in particular getting the chance to shine, both with his athleticism and as a sympathetic undersized babyface. Tursas interfered to help the heels win, taking Quack out of things by slamming him onto the apron… and Quack actually sold this bump like it was debilitating, as opposed to being “just another bump” like we often see. Lincé added to the babyfaces’ troubles with a low blow to Frightmare, and that was it.

POST-MATCH SEGMENT- great
The heels attacked the babyfaces. Tursas was about to give Quack a big diving splash, but UltraMantis Black got up from commentary and made the save with a chair. Quack got up (still selling his back), and was very wary of UltraMantis. UMB made a show of dropping the chair and repeated.

EDDIE KINGSTON PROMO- great!
It doesn’t matter who the BDK throws at him. He’ll put them all down, and eventually Claudio Castagnoli will get what is coming to him.

EDDIE KINGSTON vs. DELIRIOUS (w/Ares)- 4.5/10
Kingston wins a short brawl cleanly.

OSIRIAN PORTAL vs. THE UnSTABLE (Vin Gerard & STIGMA)- 6.75/10
The UnStable won via cheating, including from Colin Delaney getting up from the commentary table.

POST-MATCH- meh
The UnStable beat down Osirian Portal, and Colin Delaney made fun of the fans for thinking that the UnStable would ever change. The idea here was good, but it felt like this went on for WAY too long.

TIM DONST PROMO- good
He says that independent wrestling doesn’t need Bryan Danielson back because it has the new Best in the World, Tim Donst, and he is going to prove that by beating Bryan tonight.

BRYAN DANIELSON vs. TIM DONST- 7.5/10
We got chants of “YOU’RE GONNA GET YOUR FLIPPIN’ HEAD KICKED IN” and “MESS HIM UP, DRAGON, MESS HIM UP!”
This was a really fun match with a hot crowd, great wrestling, and some great heel work by Donst, but it didn’t feel like it hit the level that it needed to. I know at the time people were thinking that this could be something of a break-out match for Donst, and it really wasn’t.

BRYAN DANIELSON HAS FUN WITH THE CROWD- fun

2 OUT OF 3 FALLS MATCH FOR THE CHIKARA CAMPEONATOS DE PAREJAS: Die Bruderschaft des Kruezes (Claudio Castagnoli & Ares)(c) vs. The Future Is Now (Helios & Equinox)- 6.75/10
The BDK jumped TFIN on their way to the ring. Helios got bumped on the ram to take him out for a bit, then they got Equinox into the ring and pinned him almost immediately after a Tigerbomb from Ares.
Most of the babyfaces came out to ringside to support TFIN and they got some good nearfalls in. Tursas came out to try to interfere, but all of the babyfaces got in his way, and Bryce Remsburg threatened to DQ the BDK if Tursas took one more step towards the ring. If he can make that threat, why isn’t it made all the time?
The BDK got win, but the big takeaway for me here was just how much CHIKARA has been able to make getting beaten 2-0 in a 2 out of 3 falls match not feel like the embarrassing defeat it usually would.

This was an okay show from CHIKARA. It got across what it needed to get across, but really isn’t anything you need to see if you’re already familiar with the general landscape of the promotion at the time.
