BRM Reviews PWG All-Star Weekend VI: Night 1

PWG All-Star Weekend 6: Night 1 (1/5/2008)- Van Nuys, CA

PWG WORLD TITLE MATCH: Bryan Danielson(c) vs. Low Ki- 9.5/10
AMAZING opener. This match had a very Japanese feel to it, with a much more quiet, appreciative crowd than the normal, enthusiastic, loud North American crowd. This match had awesome wrestling, extremely hard hitting, and a great finish.

EL GENERICO vs. KARL “MACHINE GUN” ANDERSON- 6.25/10

RONIN vs. SCORPIO SKY- 6/10

THE AGE OF THE FALL vs. THE DYNASTY (Scott Lost & Joey Ryan) (w/Jade Chung)- 7.25/10
It is just such a weird concept to me… The AOTF… as babyfaces?

FIRST MATCH IN A BEST OF THREE SERIES TO DETERMINE THE #1 CONTENDER TO THE PWG WORLD TITLE: Jack Evans vs. Roderick Strong- 6.25/10
A little bit disappointing, considering the stip

THE YOUNG BUCKS vs. MUSCLE OUTLAWZ (Naruki Doi & Masato Yoshino)- 6.75/10
Extremely disappointing, considering the talent involved. They also only got about 12 minutes, which was surprisingly short.

ALEX KOSLOV vs. TJ PERKINS- 6.75/10

CIMA vs. SUSUMU YOKOSUKA- DUD!
Was going okay until they did one of the most wretched finishing sequences I have ever seen. CIMA hits the Schwein... and Yokosuka just gets up. Not even one of those fighting spirit getting up and yelling and looking like adrenaline is flowing through you kind of things... he just stands up. They both hit the ropes and Yokosuka hits a lariat. CIMA gets right back up and hits a second Schwein... and Yokozuka JUST GETS RIGHT BACK UP AGAIN! They both hit the ropes again and both go for lariats, bumping into each other and stumbling backwards, Yokozuka hits an Eternal Dream for a two-count and CIMA rolls him up with a grounded crucifix pin for the victory. WTF? Ever heard of selling?
Combine the crappy finish with an extremely disappointing length (only eleven minutes for these two?) and you get a dud.

CHRIS HERO, CANDICE LERAE & THE NECRO BUTCHER vs. HUMAN TORNADO, CLAUDIO CASTAGNOLI, & EDDIE KINGSTON- 7.25/10
- if Hero's team won he would get a No DQ's match with Tornado with Claudio & Kingston barred from ringside, but if Tornado's team won, he would a No DQ's match with Candace with Hero and Necro barred from ringside.

This match was extremely up and down. It had some great parts... and some not so great parts. The stuff outside just felt too goofy for this match. It would have worked fine in most other situations, but not in a feud like this and in a match with Chris Hero taking on his three most hated enemies and trying to prevent his girlfriend from being forced into a match with her abuser.
I loved all of the parts where Candice was involved, all of the parts where Hero was in the ring being beaten down by Kingston, and Necro beating the heels down after getting the hot tag (aside from the part where Tornado no-sold a low blow)... but I just couldn't get into some of the brawling on the outside, and Tornado's offense on Hero. I love this feud, but, for some reason, I wasn't into Tornado's offense tonight. I popped when Hero blocked House Party, but that was about the only thing involving Tornado on offense that I cared for.
Great stuff at the end with Kingston and Candice. Candice didn't back down, but you got the feeling that Kingston was going to hurt her badly, so I popped HUGE when Hero intercepted the Backfist to the Future.
Overall, this match was great, but also slightly disappointing.

Overall, a very, very good show from PWG.

Yeah. I don't think I realized how new they were when I wrote this.
