NWK reviews Spring Stampede 1998

Going into the PPV, my thoughts
As I said last review, Uncensored 1998 sparked my interest in Spring Stampede 1998. From the looks of the WWE Network, we have some pretty solid booking. Savage only attacked Sting because it sets up a Savage vs Sting match for the title, Raven gets a shot at DDP's US Title and....a baseball bat on a pole match between Nash/Hogan and Piper/Giant? That gives them all the more reason to end Giant/Nash from last PPV with a powerbomb! Grrrr. Anyway, here we go!

We get a promo that indicates that there IS a power struggle in the NWO, Savage wants to take over the NWO with the title win and make Hogan bottom of the order, and Nash isn't happy about teaming with Hogan. Macho Man had his arm broken and the cast is coming off, and the title match is under no DQ rules.
Saturn w/ Kidman vs. Goldberg
-Goldberg throws Kidman out of the ring onto Saturn
-Huh, Saturn gets offense.
-But gets a Suplex reversed
-Gorillia Press into Front Slam looks sick
-Huh, more offense by Saturn
-Bakc and for match here, and the Jackhammer is blocked.
-FRONT SLAM OFF THE SECOND ROPE
-Saturn locks in the Rings and stands up and Jackhammers him for the win
6.75/10 for a GREAT Goldberg match.
Chavo Guerrero w/Eddie Guerrero vs Ultimo Dragon
-If Chavo wins this, he's free from Eddie's rule
-Also HOORAY the "Eddie Guerrero is my favorite wrestler" shirts.
-Eddie covering his face with a towel whenever Chavo starts losing is great
-At one point, Chavo's in a camel clutch and Eddie looks at the camera and goes, "I'm trying" and facepalms.
-Really cool flipping suicide dive by Chavo
-Chavo accidentally low blows the Dragon and is a babyface about it, letting the ref check him out. Eddie on the other hand is furious
7.75/10 great match that's worth looking up on its own.
Chris Benoit vs Booker T in a No Time Limit match for the TV Title
Great match that goes over 15 minutes, ends when Benoit tries to help up a downed ref, and gets high kicked by Booker for the win.
8/10 for a creative finish
Curt Hennig w/Rick Rude vs British Bulldog w/ Jim Neidhart (Neidhart will be handcuffed to Rick Rude
-Apparently this spawns because of an NWO vs Harts rivalry, and Rick Rude has been using handcuffs.
-Bulldog works Hennig's injured knee. Props to Heenanan for telling Bulldog to use a submission
-Neidhart gets into a scuff with the police officer, and somehow Rude uncuffs himself, and cuffs Neidhart to the turnbuckle. The police officer is Vincent, and the NWO teams up on Bulldog. How did it take Neidhart that long to realize the officer was Vincent?
Hennig uses an uncovered turnbuckle bolt to pick up the win.
3/10 for overbooked bullshit.
Prince Iaukea vs Chris Jericho for the WCW Cruiserweight Championship
-Iaukea is a student of Dean, so he's avenging the honor and dignity of his teacher.
-Several false finishes here.
6.75/10
Jericho steals the Prince's towel, awesome.

Buff Bagwell and Scott Stiener come down, Buff's in a poorly wrapped cast and says he and Scott's match with Rick is canceled. James J Dillon has a doctor on tap to diagnose the wrist , Bagwell accidentally grbas Dillion with the bad hand, and so we get....
Scott Stiener and Buff Bagwell vs Rick Stiener and Lex Luger w/ Ted Dibiase
-Scott hasn't hit Rick unless his back is turn, great heel tactic.
-The heels beat up Rick until Lex comes in.
-Scott eventually runs away from Rick and Buff takes the Torture Rack with no help from Scott.
-6.5/10 for a really well booked feud
La Parka vs Psicosis
Lots of spots, flying
6/10

Kevin Nash and Hollywood Hogan vs Roddy Piper in a bat on a pole match
-After a bit of double teaming on Piper, He and Giant get their hands on Hogan's belt and beat him with it and the crowd goes apeshit.
-Nash begs Puper to tag in Giant, he does, Goants the momentum and Hogan does some choking in the ropes etc etc.
-There's some stuff that makes you wonder if Nash will betray Hogan, like when Hogan shoves Piper into his corner, but yet Nash does nothing to help him.
-GIANT DROPKICK
-Hogan grabs Piper's bat throws it away, for the Disciple's bat, Giant gets clocked, but Hogan accidentally clocks Nash,
-Hogan and co win the match. After an argument Hogan betrays Nash during a powerbomb and the Giant clears the ring of the NWO, leaving Nash/Piper/Giant in the ring.
6.75/10 for some storyline advancement
DDP vs Raven for the United States title, Raven's Rule
-Raven goes to hit DDP with the belt that he stole, but misses, and it's all Page for now.
-Raven goes on top of the stagecoach in the set, falls off it, take out the ref, and Page does a double Axe Handle off the stagecoach.
-It's worth noting the "I have a 24 inch python" sign you can see
-Tony Schavone calls a table bump in the Internet position a "Slam on the website"
- You can hear some guy yell "OH SHIT" as they go into the crowd
-It really feels like a brawl because everything they do is tearing up the set.
-CHOKE WITH A BULL ROPE
- Oh yeah, they did this angle on some MTV show.
-Aaand we get the second kitchen sink pun in two months.
-Lots of false finishes after the brawl
-Every member of the Flock either gets bodied by DDP or hits Raven accidentally, and some guy dressed as a grip smackd DDP with a weapon for the Raven win.
7.5/10 for awesome brawling and wrestling both.
Sting vs Randy Savage No DQs for the WCW World Heavyweight Championship
-Savage takes a bump over the railing and on to a wagon wheel
-A bail of hay was used as a weapon
- Miss Elizabeth takes a Stinger Splash and Hogan screws Savage and in turn Nash powerbombs Sting for Savage to get the win.
5.5/10

Final thoughts
Interesting turn of events, a lot more bullcrap than Uncensored but still a decent PPV, with some great stuff, and once again, intriguing stuff that makes me want to watch the next show. Let's keep this WCW 1998 streak alive with Slamboree!
