BRM Reviews the 10/2/1995 Nitro

Post by Big Red Machine » Oct 1st, '14, 01:23

RIC FLAIR PROMO- he shows up at the announcers’ desk grabs a headset and starts shouting unintelligibly. I think I picked out the phrases “Double A,” “mile-high night,” and “Rocky Mountain ass.” Then he said he was coming after Arn. This was really weird because Flair sounded elated rather than an angry.

RECAP OF SAVAGE-LUGER STUFF- good

IF LUGER LOSES, HE MUST LEAVE WCW FOREVER: Lex Luger vs. Randy Savage- 4.25/10
Eric Bischoff informed us that this match was our “opening main event.” Wow. That’s even lower on the totem pole than the Kiss Demon’s “main events.”
They do stuff. There is a ref bump. Savage gets a visual pinfall, but the ref isn’t there to make the count. Then The Giant comes out and gives Randy a chokeslam. When Luger recovers, he locks Savage in the Torture Rack and gets the win.

We got a commercial for Halloween Havoc, including the “Sumo Monster Truck Match” between Hogan and The Giant. While advertising this match (and their WCW World Heavyweight Title match later that night), the words “card subject to change” appeared across the bottom of the screen in decently-sized white letters so you couldn’t possibly miss them. For perhaps the only time in recorded history, that phrase came off as reassuring.

Disco Inferno comes out to dance on the stage. The reason for this is apparently that Disco is seeking attention. Eddie Guerrero, who is supposed to be wrestling right now, comes out to his stereotypical Mexican music and yells at Disco.

EDDIE GUERRERO vs. DEAN MALENKO- 5/10, but tremendous for the time it got.
In the middle of this tremendous bout full of faced-paced technical action, we had to cut a way because Hogan’s limo was arriving. Why was the Hulkster not on time to the show? Not only did they need to show us the limo arriving but we had to see an argument between Hogan, who rambled on about how he had to beat up The Giant because of all the “little Hulksters” that believe in him, and Jimmy Hart, who rambled on about how Hogan’s neck wasn’t healed yet (he is still in a neck brace).
After the match, Dean claimed that Eddie got lucky and demanded a rematch. Eddie told him “any time, any place,” and they shook on it. I CAN’T WAIT!

HULK HOGAN PROMO-
He ended three straight sentences with “brother”… and they weren’t even long sentences. Did he just forget the words “dude” and “Jack?” Hogan is here to beat up The Giant because he got inspired yesterday by a little Hulkamaniac who was waiting for a double lung transplant. The poor youngster told Hulk to man up and take on The Giant, so that’s what Hulk is going to do.
I can’t help but notice that Hogan is wearing not one but TWO crucifixes because he’s just that much of a babyface.
Anyway, despite the fact that he just got done talking about how he wasn’t going to wait for The Giant to come to him, so he would go to the back and beat The Giant up, Hogan decided to take the time to take a lap around ringside and high-five the fans. While he was doing this, a little old lady threw powder in his eyes, jumped the guardrail, and attacked Hogan and Jimmy with her cane.
Wait… no… it’s not a woman. It’s the Taskmaster. Giant and Zodiac also come out. The Giant ripped Hogan’s neckbrace off, then snapped his now-weakened neck (if you’ll remember, this was the move that caused Hogan to have to wear the neckbrace in the first place, and caused him to spend a few days in the hospital… and that when Hogan had a completely healthy neck.
Then they shaved off his mustache. This would have been good, except that the neck-snap has basically been built up as this terrible injury. It’s hard to care about a guy getting his mustache shaved off when he might well have just been crippled. The American Males and then the Nasty Boys tried to make the save, but they got chokeslammed. While this was happening, the Taskmaster cut Hogan’s hair (if only it had been Zodiac doing it instead), which, again, it’s hard to care about because Hulk might well be kayfabe paralyzed

RIC FLAIR vs. ARN ANDERSON- 6.5/10
A very intense match, which ended in a DQ when Flair had the Figure Four locked in, but Pillman came out and hit him with a diving splash (the ref actually called for the DQ before Pillman ever leapt). Arn and Pillman then beat Flair down.

When we got back from the commercial, Bischoff told us that Flair had asked Nick Bockwinkel for a cage match against Arn, and it will happen NEXT WEEK! Also on next week’s show, we will see Sting vs. The Shark, Big Bubba vs. Road Warrior Hawk, and Sabu vs. Mr. JL. That sounds pretty great, actually.

This was probably the best Nitro so far, IMO.
