Road Dogg and William Regal were part of the latest round of WWE cuts,

The cuts are continuing in WWE.

William Regal (real name Darren Matthews) and “Road Dogg” Jesse James (real name Brian James) were the most notable wrestlers released from the company Wednesday. Both are pro wrestling lifers who have been working behind the scenes for NXT, WWE’s developmental promotion.

“With the continued evolution of NXT 2.0, we’ve decided to part ways with some of the staff based in our Performance Center,” WWE said in a statement. “We thank them for their many contributions throughout the years and wish them the best.”

The news of the releases was first reported by Sean Ross Sapp of Fightful, who added that other behind-the-scenes employees including Ace Steel and Ryan Katz are also out. Regal, along with his backstage role, was also NXT’s longtime on-screen general manger.

While NXT had been largely considered a developmental franchise for WWE, the company eventually pivoted to calling it a full-fledged third brand and put the promotion’s show on USA Network in September of 2019 — going head-to-head with All Elite Wrestling. NXT lost the ratings war and WWE has since shifted it from being something of an island property to being more directly focused on the developmental aspect.

Meanwhile, WWE restructuring over the past year-plus has trimmed a lot of costs from the budget, including both wrestlers and behind-the-scenes workers.

Last week, Toni Storm was released just days after she competed for the SmackDown women’s title, though her exit was reportedly requested by the talent as opposed to budgetary.

Other star wrestlers who were released from WWE last year include Braun Strowman, Bray Wyatt, Aleister Black, Keith Lee, Ember Moon, Ruby Riott, Karrion Kross and Nia Jax.

UPDATE::

William Regal and Road Dogg are among the names cut from WWE this afternoon as part of cuts at the WWE Performance Center.

Bryan Alvarez has confirmed that William Regal, Road Dogg, Timothy Thatcher, Danny Burch, Hideki Suzuki, Cathy Corino, Dave Kapoor (Ranjin Singh), Scott Armstrong, George Carroll and Ryan Katz are among the names that have been released from the company. PWInsider also reported that Chris Guy (Ace Steel) have been released.

“With the continued evolution of NXT 2.0, we’ve decided to part ways with some of the staff based in our Performance Center,” WWE said in a statement. “We thank them for their many contributions throughout the years and wish them the best.”

Regal had been working as a talent scout for the company. Prior to NXT 2.0, he had been the on-air General Manager of the brand. He had been part of WWE dating back to 2000, when he re-signed with the company as a wrestler following a previous stint in the late 90s. Road Dogg (Brian James) had been a producer and writer for WWE since 2014, and had recently moved to NXT.

Thatcher, Suzuki, and Burch had been on-air talents for NXT. Suzuki, known as Hachiman, had been on NXT TV yesterday, accompanying Roderick Strong to ringisde for his match against Carmelo Hayes.

Kapoor had formerly been a Senior Vice President of Creative for WWE and moved to Florida last year to work in NXT full-time. He was also The Great Khali’s longtime on-air manager. Ace Steel had been working as a trainer at the WWE Performance Center. Katz had been a creative producer involved in character development and vignettes and had been with the company since 2015. Armstrong had been a long time referee on WWE’s main roster before moving to NXT.

Corino, best known as Allison Danger, had started working as a coach for the WWE Performance Center last October. Carroll had joined the company last year as a producer and writer.

Regal getting fired is probably the biggest sign so far that Hunter has zero power now.

Me neither, it took me a while to make the connection.

Also, i'd be surprised if Thatcher is not on Terminus 2, whether it's Gresham or not idk

Regal and Road Dogg releases signal the end of Triple H’s grip and the strengthening of Nick Khan’s. They’re streamlining everything, I’m confident, like many others, that it’s being geared up for sale.

Now I'm hoping that Hunter and Steph pull some sort of "do for us what your dad did for you" card and get to buy it.

I wonder who VKM's "take care of James Dudley, Arnold Skaaland, and whoever else it was" (Albano, maybe?) would be.

Brisco, KD, and Prichard?

Per Joe Gagne
Joe’s last match in the company was winning the NXT title, which feels like a first

i'm guessing he meant WWE, surely there are many more examples in other places.

another one to consider. Has someone been fired twice by the same company in less than 8 months?

I'm certain this has happened to someone like Buddy Landel or Eddie Gilbert or Austin Idol.

But to someone who is actually reliable to show up for their job? I don't think so.

He released Briscoe last year, and Prichard has been picked up and dropped several times, so I don’t think that loyalty exists there. At this point, it’s probably Kevin Dunn and Michael Cole who get that protection.
