WCPW Pro Wrestling World Cup '17: England Bracket
March 21st, 2017
Harvey Hadden Sports Village, Nottingham, England
Show starts with the English National Anthem. Can't wait for the Mexico bracket! Matt Striker on commentary.
Ospreay vs Kirby Tale of the Tape Video - Couldn't hear shit. Bad audio.
PWWC English Qualifying First Round Match
"The Aerial Assassin" Will Ospreay vs Martin Kirby - 6.5/10
Kirby has Dr. Zoidberg in his trunks, nothing says indie wrestler as cartoon characters in your trunks. Match was good, fast paced and back and forward. I don't really care much for Kirby and never saw him advancing, at least not against Ospreay. It just felt like waiting for the Os Cutter to get this over with.
Brown vs Aldis Tale of the Tape Video - Both guys came off as really chill and nice guys. Rampage had a t-shirt that said 'Jobber', probably not a good thing to have during interviews.
PWWC English Qualifying First Round Match
Rampage Brown vs Nick Aldis - 5.5/10
I know Rampage is not referenced by his last name, but I like it. This was a lot less of a hoss fight than what I was expecting, match started with some chain wrestling on the mat and later on moved into more big moves and submissions. Finish was kinda lacklusting, Brown just got Aldis on a roll up.
Striker Presents the Mexican Bracket. Penta vs Fenix, Ligero vs Drago, Alberto vs Mysterio, and Hijo de Dos Caras vs Juvi.
Liam Slater and Matt Riddle vs Prospect - 4/10
If they're doing the whole English bracket tonight, i have no idea why they didn't do this match after the first round was over and let everyone rest. One of the Prospects brought 2 bamboo sticks to the match, gave one to Riddle and this became a stick fight, Riddle asked the ref to let it happen. This match is when you bring a big name to your local indie and have him mix it up with your local roster. Good guys won. This was a huge waste of time and the worst Riddle match i've seen. After the match everypne embraced,
Scurll vs Sabre Tale of the Tape Video - Great, both guys talk about their experience winning tournaments in the last year and about how they know each other quite well.
PWWC English Qualifying First Round Match
"The Villain" Marty Scurll vs Zack Sabre Jr - 7.5/10
Just tremendous technical wrestling bell to bell, but with no build towards the finish. Not the best match I've seen with these guys, but the best thing so far tonight. I don't get tired of seeing them wrestle. Sabre countered the Chickenwing for the quick pin.
Gibson vs Havoc Tale of the Tape Video - Good, Gibson is awesome!
PWWC English Qualifying First Round Match
Zack Gibson vs Jimmy Havoc - 6/10
This is the first match these guys have had. Gibson did his intro shtick, but the fans didn't really react, so he got to cut his promo perfectly. Gibson is working Havoc's shoulder via submission, Havoc is trying to get Gibson to go hardcore. Gibson and Havoc are trying to get hardcore by throwing Havoc to the chairs and the idiot fans don't move making the spot look awkward. Match was short and completely void of emotion. This was like when you have a kickass new match in PWG, then you see it in ROH with crappy fans and drain out all the match's feelings.
Fans have sucked all show.
Adam Blampied Segment - I forgot this geek is the GM of WCPW. Yet another reason why WCPW sucks. He's addressing some stuff with Gabriel Kidd and Joe Hendry and books a bunch of matches. Among them we're getting Daniels vs Ligero for the ROH title. People getting hyped for this dude and laughing at his stuff completely makes me understand why the crowd sucks.
ROH World Championship Match
El Ligero vs Christopher Daniels (C) - 6.5/10
I think that by now Daniels has defended the title more in WCPW than in ROH. Match started as a face vs face comedy match, tons of chain wrestling and stuff like that, eventually Daniels pissed off Ligero and Ligero took the heelish side to add some excitement to the match. Ligero at one point accidentally elbowed the ref and then got a clean pin, then was about to hit Daniels with the title, but then got second thoughts. Not sure why they thought they needed Ligero to get a clear pin unless he's either coming to ROH or going heel, and one of those surely doesn't seem like it's happening. Good match but annoying booking. Fans chanted 'You Deserve It', not sure who they chanted it to, knowing the fans, probably Ligero. Stupid fans.
Ricochet vs Drew Galloway - 7.5/10
Another fucking non-tournament match? how many fucking matches are on this show!? This was a big guy vs small fast guy, which is cool, except we've all seen Ricochet fight big guys without issues. Aside from that, the match was great, back and forward, each guy using the best of their arsenal. The match was mostly Ricochet failing at first to hit some moves and later on finding the strength to hit them, and at the same time, kicking out of all of Galloway's stuff with some great near falls. Finish was good.
Post-Match - Galloway puts Ricochet over. Like if Ricochet needs putting over.
Backstage we see Joe Hendry threatening Blampied. Great stuff by Hendry, exactly my thoughts on this attention whore.
PWWC English Qualifying Final Match
"The Aerial Assassin" Will Ospreay vs Rampage Brown - 6.5/10
Ospreay is selling the lower back from the start. Terrible placing of the latter match because we literally just saw a big man vs small flyer match, and these guys could definitely have a better match, but why put them together anyway. This was match going good until Bea came out during a ref bump that led to Ospreay hitting Brown with the title and a quick Os Cutter for the pin. Short match and bad finish, otherwise good.
Scottish Brackets announced: Galloway vs Mark Coffeyy, BT Gunn vs Girvan, Joe Coffey vs Thomson, and Hendry vs Kenny Williams.
PWWC English Qualifying Final Match
Jimmy Havoc vs Zack Sabre Jr - 5/10
This was really just Sabre Jr destroying Havoc via submission. Just like Riddle, this may have been the worst match I've seen of both guys, and I saw Havoc wrestle in Impact Wrestling.
Prestige (Gunn, Hendry, Banks, and Coffey) vs Bullet Club (Young Bucks, Cole) and Gabriel Kidd - 7/10
This match exists because he 'face' GM has an ego and is sending a heel faction to take out another heel faction. Fucking idiotic booking. Match itself was good, usual big tag match that starts with some babyface in peril, pairing up stuff, 4-on-4 spots, and then later on all hell breaks loose and we get tons of stuff. Story of the match was that the BC doesn't exactly like or accept this Kidd guy, but eventually wrestles up to their respect and BC accepts him. Bucks, Cole, Coffey, and Banks were the best guys out there, but the rest weren't bad per say. Good match to end a terrible show, but the damage was already done.
The only thing I cared for in this match was the prospect of one day getting Bucks vs SPPT.
OVERALL THOUGHTS:
Terrible atmosphere, terrible commentary, too many matches and the order of them, and somewhat bad match planning made this show a really bad show. I came to this show with a lot of excitement for the tournament, didn't know that there would be so many matches in the card, and match by match, I kept losing that excitement. They couldn't give the finals a good amount of time because they HAD to add their shitty tag matches. If the rest of the tournament is going to be like this, I may not make it to the finals. This show was a waste of talent and I really hope the wrestlers got paid tons of money. Skip this show.
