NJPW G1 Climax 31, Day 5
September 26, 2021
World Hall, Kobe, Japan

Master Wato vs. Kosei Fujita - 5/10
Good opener, Fujita looked good, him managing to lock the Crab on Wato, and Wato selling helped him. Wato is really improving his physic.

Yuji Nagata vs. Shingo Takagi [2] - 8/10
These Nagata matches were really good, I can appreciate how he didn't just wrestle a generic match to put over the opponent and fill in the time. In both this and the Loa matches, Nagata picked a body part and worked on it in a way, that if Shingo or Loa want, they could make it into something for their upcoming matches. In this match, Nagata went after Shingo's arm in between all the striking exchanges, but at the end fell to a Last of the Dragons. Only someone like Shingo is going to take his day off to go all out.

Post-match - Shingo cut a promo about not being able to wrestle Naito in Kobe.

G1 Climax 2021 Block A Match
Yujiro Takahashi [2] vs. Great-O-Khan [4] - 6.5/10
Match was ok. O-Khan was pretty dominant for most of the match, even they layout of the match helped him stay dominant as it came off as him losing control when jumped, and later on when Yujiro started to turn things around, O-Khan simply regrouped and took him down for good.

O-Khan is now 3-0. Top of the blocks.

G1 Climax 2021 Block A Match
Toru Yano [2] vs. Tanga Loa [2] (w/Jado) - 3/10
Not the best for Yano, I don't tend to have a problem with his technique and style, but this match had a couple of spots that really pushed it. First was Loa pulling Yano's t-shirt over his head and Yano acting like if he was blind instead of fixing his t-shirt; the other being the finish where Yano went for an Eddie Guerrero, trying to trick the referee and Loa that Jado had attacked him with a kendo stick, and Loa kinda falling for it. It looked way more scripted than Loa knowing that it was obviously Yano. Yano won with a low blow and roll up afterwards.

G1 Climax 2021 Block A Match
Tomohiro Ishii [0] vs. KENTA [2] - 8.5/10
This started with KENTA getting a lot of offense in on Ishii, it was weird for an Ishii match that tend to be more back and forth, but as it went on, Ishii and KENTA not only started trading more, they also increased the intensity. KENTA worked over Ishii's arm after ramming him into a ring post, the same arm that Ishii has been selling during the G1, that he seems to be tightly taping up so it gets swollen for the extra strong sell.

As the match went on, Ishii started to creep in on KENTA's game and they escalated for the bigger moves, but KENTA just couldn't keep Ishii down, so at the end, he had to rely on rolling up Ishii and pull the tights. This was one of KENTA's better matches in a while.

G1 Climax 2021 Block A Match
Zack Sabre Jr. [4] vs. Kota Ibushi [2] - 9/10
As much as you may want to say that this is all about Ibushi not being 100%, there is no denying that he didn't really show it here and this was all about Sabre dissecting Ibushi's arm like a surgeon, to the point that Ibushi had to rely on his kicks alone and when he tried to hit Kamigoye, that requires arm strength, Sabre countered out of it twice, ending with a crazy submission that forced Ibushi to verbally give up, since he had no arms to tap.

Sabre is 3-0 and has submitted Naito, the champion Shingo, and Ibushi. Talk about being on a role!

Post-match - Sabre cut a great promo in English, Nihongo, and Español. He made fun of Naito, he said that Block A needs to work harder because he's at the top, and what I would hope goes on for the rest of the tournament, 3 dickheads down, 6 to go!

OVERALL THOUGHTS
This may had been the weaker of the G1 shows this year, but we still had 3 really good matches. Sabre is incredible right now.
