NJPW New Japan Cup 2022 - Day 5
March 10, 2022
Aimesse Yamanashi, Kofu, Japan

Six Or Nine (Master Wato & Ryusuke Taguchi) & Tomoaki Honma vs. Suzuki-gun (DOUKI, Taichi & Zack Sabre Jr.) - 5/10
Ok match. It obviously had comedy with Taguchi, then everything Sabre did was great. Honma was there to be babyface in peril and to take the loss after Taichi's Yokozuna lariat.

Post-match - DOUKI tried to take out Sabre in advance of their singles tournament match, but Sabre managed to dodge DOUKI's attack.

CHAOS (Hirooki Goto, Kazuchika Okada & YOH) vs. House Of Torture (Dick Togo, EVIL & SHO) - 5/10
As usual, a mixed bag with SHO and EVIL wrestling being good, but SHO and EVIL cheating along with Togo not being good. Goto submitted Togo for the win. If not for House of Torture, I would love to see SHO and Okada go at it in the tournament.

Los Ingobernables de Japon (BUSHI, SANADA & Shingo Takagi) vs. United Empire (Aaron Henare, Great-O-Khan & Will Ospreay) - 7.5/10
This kinda felt like a big deal, having SANADA and Takagi pair up with any of the UE guys, even Henare who has really stepped up on his character, giving us the preview with SANADA was great. Obviously getting Shingo and Ospreay mix it up is also great, it will never not be good. Ospreay got the win over BUSHI with a Hidden Blade.

New Japan Cup 2022 Second Round Match
YOSHI-HASHI vs. Kosei Fujita - 6.5/10
This was good, these Young Lion matches are never going to be out of this world of MOTYCs, but they're always solid and above the average quality of your everyday rookie. Fujita has tons of energy in him and against someone like YH, it showed even more. YH won with the butterfly lock.

New Japan Cup 2022 Second Round Match
Gedo vs. Tetsuya Naito - 3/10
This was pretty bad, they made a strong effort to give something to Gedo by injuring Naito's knee and have him sweep hes leg over and over, but it just wasn't enough to give anyone the sense that Gedo was winning, nor it helped that Gedo is also not as agile as he was a couple of years ago. Naito also had to deal with Chase Owens and Gedo trying to use brass knucks, but at the end, Naito got the win with Polvo de Estrellas.

New Japan Cup 2022 Second Round Match
Satoshi Kojima vs. Jeff Cobb (w/Will Ospreay) - 7.5/10
This is the second time Cobb eliminated Kojima from the tournament, in neither was there any doubt that Cobb would win, but with now it was even harder to consider the idea that Kojima had any chance at advancing. So while I enjoyed the action, I did get distracted a lot seeing how they were really trying to make it seem like it wasn't a foregone conclusion. Cobb won at the end after countering Kojima's big lariat into the Tour of the Islands.

New Japan Cup 2022 Second Round Match
Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Bad Luck Fale (w/Chase Owens) - 8/10
You've watched this match tons of times, especially in New Japan Cups, the one difference that we don't get as often is Fale being the one working the leg, as he actually dropkicked Tanahashi's knee out. Tanahashi did have a lot of offense, but he was pretty much headed to the loss until he rolled up Fale and got the win out of nowhere. This felt pretty much like most of Tanahashi's big wins since the last G1.

OVERALL THOUGHTS
One of the most skippable shows in the cup, which is saying something since it's not really a first round anymore. My favorite match of the night was in the undercard.
