BRM Reviews the 10/23/2019 NXT (awesome!)

RHEA RIPLEY vs. BIANCA BELAIR- 6.75/10
This was a very good match despite them clearly holding back. I can’t wait until their big confrontation. Io Shirai interfered to try to screw Rhea out of the match but Rhea managed to kick out and Candice LeRae came out to get rid of Io. Rhea eventually won clean.

CATHY KELLEY INTERVIEWS PETE DUNNE- also, Tyler Bate was there
Dunne seemed perfectly fine with Damian Priest cheating to beat him last week, simply saying that “Priest did what he had to do.” He did, however, warn that a "receipt" was coming. He was then asked about his confrontation with Killian Dain before the match and said that he doesn’t care about Killian Dain.

TOMMASO CIAMPA VIDEO PACKAGE- decent

MATT RIDDLE vs. CAMERON GRIMES- 7/10
This was a bunch of big moves in a logical order. I don’t want to see this every week, but it worked for me here. I think it also added to the feel of desperation and frustration that help us understand Grimes’ actions in the…

POST-MATCH SEGMENT- good
Tyler Bate happened to be in the first row, and Grimes just happened to roll out of the ring right in front of him. Riddle came over to offer Grimes a fist-bump of respect but Grimes refused. Riddle being the nonchalant guy he is, just brushed this offered and offered the fist-bump to Bate instead. Bate accepted, which made Grimes angry so Grimes pushed Bate after Riddle left. Grimes went to get his hat, and when he went past Bate to leave, Bate floored him with a punch as revenge.

DONOVAN DIJAKOVIC PROMO- fine
He wants to win the title tonight to fulfill a promise he made to his family to win a title.

YOUTUBE VIDEO OF REGAL ANNOUNCING A WOMEN’S TAG TITLE #1 CONTENDERSHIP MATCH- This was a pre-tape. There is no excuse for it airing with Regal forgetting the words “tag team” in WWE Women’s Tag Team Champions.

THE FORGOTTEN SONS vs. ISAIAH SCOTT, TYLER BREEZE, & FANDANGO- 7/10
Great six-man tag team action. Scott getting the win was a bit surprising seeping as how he was a replacement for the injured KUSHIDA, but hopefully this is a sign that they have some plans for him.

RODERICK STRONG PROMO- decent

KILLIAN DAIN PROMO- AWESOME!
He’s standing by a fire and wrapping his broken fingers, and all he says is “Pete Dunne, you tried to break my fingers. I’m going to break you. And that’s all that he needed to say.

ANGEL GARZA vs. JACK GALLAGHER- 5.75/10
NXT Cruiserweight Champion Lio Rush was on commentary for this match. He still kind of comes off like a heel. Garza picked up a good little win. Garza and Rush exchanged words and gestures after the match.

WINNERS GET A WWE WOMEN’S TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH NEXT WEEK: The Horsewomen (Jessamyn Duke & Marina Shafir) vs. Dakota Kai & Tegan Nox- 0.75/10
Dakota the dumbass did not turn around to face her opponent when she heard the bell ring, so the “captain of Team Kick” got kicked right in the side the face. Some stuff happened… and then, moments later, Nox got a clean, non-rollup pin to win the match. The Horsewomen lose in three minutes. Now that I think about it, have they ever even won a match?

KABUKI WARRIORS PROMO- They appeared on the HunterTron and Asuka cut a promo in Japanese, while Kairi laughed her ass off at whatever mean things Asuka was saying about the #1 contenders. Kairi then told them that they stood no chance next week.

KEITH LEE PROMO- good

Io vs. Candice and Grimes vs. Bate have been announced for next week

NXT NORTH AMERICAN TITLE MATCH: Roderick Strong(c) vs. Keith Lee vs. Donovan Dijak- 8.5/10
This was a bunch of big moves (including a CRAZY Tower of Doom spot) all built around the story of Lee and Dijak wanting to get rid of Roddy so they could finish their business, but when they forgot about him for too long, he snuck back in and retained his title, nailing Lee with a Sick Kick after Lee had just hit an Super-Spirit Bomb on Dijakovic.

POST-MATCH SEGMENT- great, but…
UE came out and beat down Lee. Ciampa came out and had a big, long stare-down with all four heels. Then Gargano came out to back him up. Then Balor came out as well… and nailed Gargano with a Pele Kick. UE beat down Ciampa while Balor watched with disinterest. He then went to the outside and gave Gargano a shotgun dropkick into the barricade hard enough to know over the barricade and the first few rows of fans, so either those were plants or WWE is going to have a major lawsuit on their hands. He then hit Gargano with a Bloody Sunday on the ramp. When Balor took his jacket off I was expecting him to be wearing a UE armband, but not only was he not doing so, but they went to great lengths to show that he was NOT a member of the group.
This was definitely exciting, but I think it would have been a lot better if Ciampa’s entrance and stare-down with Undisputed Era hadn’t taken FOREVER it felt SOOOOO staged and more than a little ridiculous that UE wouldn’t jump him as he tried to get into the ring.

This was an awesome episode of NXT. I think it just barely gets the win over AEW this week, as while AEW was a little better in the ring, NXT had great promos, the best overall match, and the stuff I didn’t care for was a lot more limited on NXT.

According to Bryan Alvarez, the Horsewomen have not won a televised match since November 2018.

I wish you would see this in wrestling more often, undercard guys suddenly be inserting into matches and winning unexpectedly, Even if they aren't a focal point for storylines right away, that's at least something to hang his hat on.
