BRM Reviews the 6/23/2022 NXT UK (very disappointing)

ASHTON SMITH & OLIVER CARTER PROMO- very emotional, and very sad
Smith’s knee is in a brace. He cut a tremendous babyface promo about what finally winning a title in WWE means to him… and that’s why it’s so difficult for him to say that he suffered an injury during the match, and they will have to vacate the titles. We got some TREMENDOUS friend/mentor/brother stuff from these two.

HOW WILL WE DECIDE NEW CHAMPIONS?-
After Smith and Cater left, Die Familie came out and demanded that they should be crowned the new champions because they weren’t pinned in the three-way where the belts changed hands. Sid told them that they weren’t “the only team hungry for an opportunity,” and cue the parade of contenders coming out with their music. In this case, it was Briggs & Jensen, Mark Andrews & Wild Boar, and Jack Starz & Dave Mastiff. Sid announced that there would be a four-way elimination match tonight to determine the new champions.

EARLIER TODAY, SARRAY CAME TO MEIKO SEE MEIKO SATOMURA- odd
She came into her dressing room and they spoke in some broken English, then in Japanese. Two native Japanese speakers starting out in English was odd, but the really odd part was the way Meiko talked to Emilia McKenzie afterwards. She said “Sarray isn’t our only visitor. You will face Fallon Henley next week. I hope to see some fighting spirit.” Out of nowhere, she stopped being the warm but tough mentor we have seen and started to sound a little more stern and slightly bossier, like she might suddenly become disappointed with Millie should she fail. When has Millie McKenzie ever not shown fighting spirit?
Also, seeing Millie in a dress was weird.

SHA SAMUELS IS BEING INTERVIEWED, BUT ABANDONS IT TO TALK TO SID SCALA- annoying
Samuels yelled a lot. He wants a match with Wolfgang, and vowed to “make him squeal like a pig.” While he was yelling this, Wolfgang- who just happened to be walking through that hallway- came up behind him. There was no reason for Wolfgang to be here. All it does is add another coincidence to a genre that always has way too many.

MYLA GRACE vs. ISLA DAWN- 4/10
Half of Grace’s offense appears to be headscissors. Nigel claimed that this was a big win for Isla, which was a blatant lie.

TYLER BATE HAS TAKEN A LEAVE OF ABSENCE FOLLOWING LAST WEEK’S SHOCKING ATTACK BY TRENT SEVEN- good to know… but for the love of G-d, don’t call him the “big strong boy” when you’re doing his.

KENNY WILLIAMS VIDEO/PROMO- meh
He vows to figure out who Tiger Turan is.

EARLIER THIS WEEK, NOAM DAR INTERRUPTED A SID SCALA INTERVIEW- bad
Dar claims to have cleaned out the division and wants to retire as Heritage Cup Champion, but he wants one more match first. I hate goofy, clownish, cartoon heels.

NINA SAMUELS vs. SARRAY- 4.5/10
Sarray won clean. It’s really hard to care about Nina in this painfully obvious jobber to the stars role.

BLAIR DAVENPORT VIDEO PACKAGE- good
She returns next week.

SARRAY’S INTERVIEW IS INTERRUPTED BY XIA BROOKSIDE & ELIZA ALEXNADER- meh
They menaced her, then backed up when Meiko Satomura showed up. At one point Eliza reached for Sarray’s medallion, but Xia warned her not to touch it “or you might turn into a Power Ranger or something,” as if that was incentive to not touch something.

FOUR-WAY ELIMINATION MATCH FOR THE VACANT NXT UK TAG TEAM TITLES: Jack Starz & Dave Mastiff vs. Mark Andrews & Wild Boar vs. Josh Briggs & Brooks Jensen vs. Die Familie (Rohan Raja & Teoman) (w/Charlie Dempsey)-
This was uninspired. The crowd tried hard to make it feel big, but, to quote Captain Picard, “wishing for a thing does not make it so.”
The choice of Briggs & Jensen getting the belts is baffling from pretty much any perspective other than Vince/Bruce/whoever ordering that they get the belts… which makes me wonder if Smith’s injury might actually be a work, as building Smith and Carter for months for their big title win only to have them drop the belts to a complete random other babyface team in their first defense is the sort of thing that will absolutely kill a babyface act that has just reached a new peak.

A bad episode of NXT UK. This promotion has quickly become very depressing to watch. There were a few issues before the NXT 2.0 crew showed up, but since they have showed up, things have started to feel like they’re speeding for a cliff.
