BRM Reviews the 3/10/2023 Rampage

Post by Big Red Machine » Mar 11th, '23, 21:13

SAMMY GUEVARA vs. ACTION ANDRETTI- 6.75/10
They did flippy moves. It seemed like they were working together a little too often for my liking. Guevara won after Daniel Garcia came down and pushed Andretti off the top rope. Ricky Starks kind of looks like an asshole for not being ready to repay the favor to Andretti.

DARBY ALLIN PROMO- fine

JUNGLE BOY PROMO- mostly good
He reflected on his feud with Christian. This part felt a little too unemotional for the emotion he was telling us he was feeling. He says he’ll be coming for one of the singles champions soon.

WILL HOBBS & Q.T. MARSHALL PROMO- snore
Q.T. will be hosting a talk show on Dynamite. He says he will tell us who broke into Wardlow’s car.

CARTWHEEL JACK & STARBOY CHARLIE vs. THE ACCLAIMED (w/Billy Gunn)- squash

POST-MATCH SEGMENT- bad
2.0 came out and tried to get the Acclaimed to join the Jericho Appreciation Society again. Tony Schiavone said they wouldn’t make good members of the JAS “because they don’t cheat.” This would be the same Acclaimed who won the tag team titles after their manager hit Swerve Strickland with a Fame-Asser. Every time Schiavone harps on the JAS for cheating, it makes me want to punch him in the face because of how much of a hypocrite he is about this. The JAS or MJF cheat? “They’re monsters! Flay them alive!” The Acclaimed or Britt Baker & Jamie Hayter or Jon Moxley cheat? “What great strategy!” F*ck you.
Anyway, nothing happened here. It was just a waste of time. We already know that the Acclaimed can beat jobbers, and we already know that the JAS is recruiting them but they don’t want to join.

JAS PROMO TO BUILD UP THE TRIOS TITLE MATCH-meh
Jericho was the only one who talked. He tried to make this match feel important, but he failed.

KONOSUKE TAKESHITA vs. “PERRO PELIGROSO” PRESTON VANCE (w/Jose the Assistant)- 6/10
Perro Peligroso is LFI’s “mask collector.” That’s news to me. Has he been winning apuestas matches on Dark or something?
Don Callis was on commentary for this match. Takeshita won clean with a backslide. Callis claimed that this was one of his (Callis’) signature moves. Jericho backed this claim up. Callis also claimed to have given Takeshita advice before the match.

SHANE STRICKLAND PROMO- great
He has something prepared for Keith Lee that Lee will never see coming.

MARK BRISCOE ANNOUNCES THAT THE ROH WORLD TAG TEAM TITLES ARE VACANT AND NEW CHAMPIONS WILL BE CROWNED IN A LADDER MATCH AT SUPERCARD OF HONOR 2023- a big giant honking red flag
This new ROH that Tony has just launched DESPERATELY needs something to build to. You have a title that you need to vacate and crown new champions… and instead of doing a tournament, you’re putting the belts on the line in a random Ladder match?!
And, just to make matters worse, this was presented as Tony Khan going up to Mark Briscoe to ask what to do about the tag titles. You’re the matchmaker, Tony! You couldn’t figure anything out in the past two months?!
Oh yeah. The first team announced are the Lucha Bros.

VIDEO PACKAGE ABOUT HOOK GETTING A MATCH AGAINST STOKELY HATHAWAY- meh
I assume the “no DQs” stip will result in Stokely paying someone off.

VIDEO PACKAGE TO HYPE UP THE MAIN EVENT- very short, and it was just Excalibur narrating. You couldn’t have Nyla cut a promo?
During the entrances, the announcers proceeded to repeat half of the things we had just been told in this video package. Do they not watch the video packages?

RIHO vs. NYLA ROSE (w/Marina Shafir)- 6.75/10
The announcers have concocted this story about how it was a big deal to Nyla that Riho beat her to become the inaugural AEW Women’s World Champion on the first Dynamite in Nyla’s home town.” It has been almost three and a half years since that match, I don’t recall Nyla ever mentioning that this was an issue for her, even while they continued to feud over the belt a few months afterwards.
Riho overcame both the size disparity and Marina’s interference to pick up the win.

POST-MATCH SEGMENT- hated it
Nyla and Shafir attacked Riho after the match. As they were leaving, Ruby Soho, Toni Storm, and Saraya (now known as “the Outcasts”) came out. Despite Shafir and certainly Nyla being homegrown stars, they didn’t have any words with them at all. They went down to the ring to spray-paint Riho and beat on her a bit… and, of course, no one came out to help Riho, despite these three feuding with about six different people, and there being a whole bunch more of theoretically should be against them, but aren’t getting involved because then the babyfaces would have an overwhelming advantage and the story wouldn’t work.

A meh episode of Rampage.
