Cero Reviews AEW Dynamite 10.9: Moxley vs Spears

AEW Dynamite
October 9th, 2019
Boston, MA

Young Bucks vs Private Party Video Package - Good. The best tag team in the world that needs to prove it, and a young hungry team trying to make a name.

S.C.U., The Hybrid2, and Best Friends are shown among the crowd watching the match. You know, I think it's a good idea to have some wrestlers watch the match live rather than TVs backstage.

AEW Tag Team Championship Tournament First Round Match
The Young Bucks vs Private Party - 8.5/10
Private Party look like superstars coming out, they got a huge reaction. Story of the match was that of experience vs youth, with the Bucks knowing the tricks, the mind games, seeing beyond the obvious; while Private Party had, not for much, but a slight agility edge on the Bucks.

Kassidy got worked on for a bit until Quen came in for an awesome hot tag, dude was flying all over the place. Bucks managed to cut off Quen too, but couldn't put him down with neither tag moves or submissions, making the Bucks getting frustrated. Kassidy took a powerbomb on the ramp, so he got his back worked on towards the end of the match, including a long battle to a Sharpshooter. Finish saw PP make a comeback, take out Nick with Jin n' Juice, then a SSP on Matt for a two count, but when the Bucks went for the Meltzer Driver, Kassidy blocked Nick, Quen rolled up Matt, and got the upset win. Awesome match, Private Party just made themselves stars.

Post-match - PP celebrated into the crowd. Bucks were flabbergasted in the ring.

"This is awesome" chants within the first 15 minutes of the show.

Chris Jericho & Co. Segment - Jericho, Hager, Guevara, Santana, and Ortiz all came out together. Last week they looked like a really weird team, but now, all dressed up in black, I can see it. They cover all the bases. They call themselves 'The Inner Circle'.

Jericho put himself over saying that AEW's first show was a success thanks to him. He said that this group is taking over. He introduced one by one. Fans chanted We The People for Hager and Jericho shut them up talking shit of WWE Creative. He ended the promo saying he hated the Rhodes family and that he'll destroy Cody at Full Gear. Good promo, a perfect follow up to last week.

Jimmy Havoc Promo - He cut a side box promo during his entrance, he said that tonight, Allin gets to feel his pain and he becomes the No. 1 Contender for Jericho's title.

AEW World Championship No. 1 Contendership Match
Jimmy Havoc vs Darby Allin - 7/10
I'm really starting to like Havoc and Allin's themes, it's not the PROGRESS theme, but we work with what we have.

These two went out there to prove that they're just not trash brawlers and spot monkeys. They still did some crazy stuff like suplexing Allin from the ring to the floor. Havoc focused on Darby's hand for most of the match, getting a ton of near falls, but he couldn't seal the deal, and then Allin just made a comeback and won with the Coffin Drop.

It was a given that Allin was winning, with this match he is being built as an dangerious underdog towards next week, with him being tortured most of the match, but being hard to take out and having some explosive attacks that can surprise Jericho.

Bea Priestley & Emi Sakura vs AEW Wome's Champion Riho & Dr. Britt Baker, DMD - 7/10
Nice to see Sakura back, I didn't think she'd be coming back to be honest. The match up makes sense because Baker and Bea are having their feud, and Riho facing her teacher is a good first challenge, but it's kinda weird to do a match that will focus a lot on a feud with the champion being there in between with no stake in such feud.

Riho worked with her teacher early on, which led to the 'heel' team cutting her off for a while. Bea user her very first chance in the ring to just go after Baker and they completely ignored the match as they brawled all over ringside. Once the match was back in control, the heels now worked over Baker, but it was mostly to lead to Bea and her having their time to do their thing. Last minutes saw Baker and Sakura go at it, Riho took out Bea, allowing Baker to lock in that Stretch/Mandible Claw submission that I really hope it gets a name soon. Good match overall, Emi Sakura is so good.

Post-match - Bea and Baker went at it again, but Ref Aubrey and Riho broke them up.

Best Friends Interview - They're in the crowd, they're asked about their upcoming match vs S.C.U. They just kinda toss it to Orange Cassidy who gives their thumbs up. Lights go out, which is now part of Shawn Spear's entrance. I feared the Dark Order interruption.

Shawn Spears w/Tully Blanchard vs Jon Moxley - 8.5/10
Maybe he heard the criticism, but Spears dropped the dumbass contacts. PAC joined the commentary table, he was awesome. Moxley is sporting his NJPW wrestling attire, but comes out throught the ramp. He got to the ring and straight to Spear's face, even got a cheap shot on Tully.

This match was a brawl, Moxley was going 100 mph completely destroying Spears. It would take Tully to ram Mox to the steel steps when Spears distracted the ref, to finally give Spears the upper hand. Spears repaid Mox with a beat down the same intensity as he got before, I'm talking running DVDs into the barricade. Last minutes in the match, they went back and forward in the ring, trading some near falls, Spears even pulled out an Ushigoroshi. Mox won with the Paradigm Shift.

This was arguably Spear's best match of his career, at least wrestling-wise. I'd love to see these two go at it again in a bigger show. PAC's commentary seems to be building towards Mox vs PAC for claim at a shot of Jericho, he was all about being undefeated for years with the exception of the Ben-K loss.

Post-match - Omega came down through the ramp, he had a barb-wired bat and a barb-wired broom. Mox went to get face to face, but smart enough, didn't get close. Omega tossed the bat to Mox and challenged him to fight, but PAC attacked Omega from behind with a chair and left Omega for Mox to kill. Mox left without attacking Omega, he doesn't want a fallen Omega.

Dustin Rhodes & "Hangman" Adam Page vs The Inner Circle (Chris Jericho & Sammy Guevara) w/Jake Hager - 7.5/10
This match was announced that the time limit is as far as the show can go, I liked that, it doesn't pretend it will go further than the televised show. Similar to the Lucha Underground "All Night Long" match.

Page and Rhodes are such a weird team in paper, but side to side, I can totally see it working out, like Schiavone and Ross mentioned, a Windhams feel to them. Likewise, talk about a rub for Sammy to tag with Jericho.

Match saw a really heated Goldust, that may or may not have led to Jericho and Guevara to cutting off Page and working over him for most of the match. Rhodes got the hot tag, and managed for a while until the number game pilled up on him. Hager took out Page outside with a huge Lariat, allowing Jericho to hit the Judas Effect on Rhodes for the win. Good match, given the pair ups, this was a lot better than I expected. Sammy looked great.

Between Hager, Page, and Rhodes, if you like Lariats, you'll love this match.

Post-match - The Inner Circle beat up Rhodes until Page tried to even the odds, but Hager took him out. Page and Hager brawled to the back. Lights went out, when they came back up, Cody was in the ring to save his big bro. Don't know why Cody need to turn off the lights for his save, but at least he's someone that does have the executive power to tell people to turn off the lights so he can run to the ring and not get ambushed midway there.

Santana and Ortiz took out Cody and Rhodes until MJF came for the save, they super teased the turn on Cody, but he ended up saving him, he unfortunately celebrated enough that ended up taking a Codebreaker from Jericho. The day MJF turns on Cody, it will be amazing.

Bucks came out to take out Santana and Ortiz, and now outnumbered, Jericho finally took off, but before he could leave, Darby Allin skated down the ramp and took out Jericho. Allin vs Jericho in 7 days! Good guys win tonight.

OVERALL THOUGHTS
Great show for AEW, they managed to surpass the first episode in my opinion. Zero hot-shotting surprises, this was all character/storyline building. It didn't feel like they were trying to grasp the momentum and rather just doing what they'll be doing on a weekly basis.

This explanation still doesn't work because
1. How did they know when to turn the lights back on?
2. Why did he stand around and wait for the lights to turn back on instead of attacking Sammy and Jericho right away?
3. This assumes that Cody can see in the dark but the heels can't.

1. Cody: "Give me thirty seconds just to get to the ring"
Production Guy: "Ok"
Cody is in gorilla, he's ran down ramps for many years, he knows what to expect, it's like when you can walk around your house in the dark, you can dodge the stuff you know.

2. He can't see who was who and didn't want to attack his brother. Getting to the ring is a straight line, figuring out who is who is harder. He doesn't have powers to see in the dark.

3. See above.

You jokingly brought up in a TNA review years ago that people with the "magically appear in the ring" entrances have night vision goggles, and as a result my expanded theory is that people who do it have a ridiculous, James Bond-esque amount of gear such as remote control light dimmers as well, like you see in high security conference rooms, except it's hooked up to the arena lights.

Well played, sir. Cody was quite lucky that the heels were facing in a direction where they couldn't see him, though.
