BRM Reviews the 12/4/2019 NXT

Post by Big Red Machine » Dec 5th, '19, 20:22

We start off with Mauro on that platform in the “I’m announcing big news” position that they sometimes have Sarah Schreiber deliver breaking news from. Mauro begins to run down the show when Killian Dain comes out to the ring and tells us all that Damian Priest is too cowardly to face him, so he wants someone else to come out and fight him. Mauro tells us that Priest isn’t a coward but rather just has injured ribs. Dain’s open challenge resulted in us getting…

KILLIAN DAIN vs. PETE DUNNE- 8/10
This was an awesome match telling the story of the “Bruiserweight” actually having to wrestle like a cruiserweight for once to face his much larger opponent. Dain eventually got the win when Dunne tried to choke him out while he was on the top rope so Dain fell backwards and pancaked him for the win.

CATHY KELLEY INTERVIEWS DAKOTA KAI- Dakota claimed she would take Rhea Ripley out tonight. I’m sorry, but even with her new heel edge, I just don’t see it.

The next TakeOver show will be TakeOver: Portland on Sunday- not Saturday, and it will take place on February 16th, which means we’re not getting a TakeOver on Royal Rumble weekend. Huh.

UNDISPUTED ERA PROMO- great
Bobby Fish is not out here with them because he was injured last week. Cole recounts all of the bad things that happened to them last week (Fish’s injury, Lee pouncing Cole into the crowd, Balor turning on Cole) and said that they wouldn’t leave the ring until Balor answered their questions.
Instead of Balor coming out they got Keith Lee, who Kyle O’Reilly cut a promo on. Lee cut a great promo in response so Cole suggested that UE end his career right now but Lee managed to fight all three of them off. When Cole tried to retreat up the ramp he was attacked from behind by Tommaso Ciampa. Ciampa rolled Cole back into the ring and Lee went for the Spirit Bomb but Roddy and Kyle pulled Cole to safely and UE ran away.

XIA LI PROMO- A good promo to build up her match with Shayna Baszler tonight. Considering that she hasn’t been speaking English for very long, this was probably the best this could have gone.

KUSHIDA VIDEO PACKAGE- meh. He’s now KUSHIDA, family man, fighting to give his family a better life. Also, apparently he returns later tonight. This seems like something that should have received a lot more hype.

XIA LI vs. SHAYNA BASZLER- 4.5/10
FANTASTIC for the four minutes it got.

KASSIUS OHNO PROMO- good
He’s laying down an inter-NXT brand challenge so that we can have a preview of Worlds Collide.

ADRIAN ALANIS & LEON RUFF vs. THE FORGOTTEN SONS (w/Jaxson Ryker)- squash
Yeah… I don’t think it helps EVOLVE to mention that these guys are EVOLVE guys if you’re just going to squash them. After the match Ryker gave Ruff a SICKENING chokeslam over the ropes and onto the apron (and then down onto the floor).

DAKOTA KAI vs. RHEA RIPLEY- no rating, bad segment
Heel Dakota’s entire TitanTron video is her heel turn, and she turns around and watches it while nodding in satisfaction. Excellent.
Rhea came out and cut a promo about Dakota setting them up, then said that this was a set-up, too, at which point Mia Yim came out and beat up Dakota, so there goes the heat and we never got the advertised match. These two had a great brawl, but the way they set it up killed it. Why not give us that advertised match, have Dakota use the brace again for a DQ, and THEN have Mia Yim make her big return making the save.
POST-NON-MATCH SEGMENT- good
As Dakota stood there looking smug, the Horsewomen came out and attacked Rhea three on one. Rhea did her absolutely best to fight them off, but was eventually felled by the numbers game. This was a decent angle, but the absence of Candice LeRae to help Rhea was rather suspect. Baszler then cut an awesome promo on Rhea and told her that she would get a title shot in two weeks on December 18th.

CATHY KELLEY INTERVIEWS KEITH LEE & TOMMASO CIAMPA- meh
The reason for this interview is that our mina event for tonight has only just now- half way through the show- been booked. That match will be Undisputed Era vs. Ciampa, Lee, and a partner of their choice, and Cathy wants to know who the partner will be. The partner will be Dijakovic… so it’s a lesser version of War Games. Why did we even have War Games if it wasn’t going to solve anything?

FINN BALOR VIDEO PACKAGE- very good

ISAIAH “SWERVE” SCOTT VIDEO PACKAGE- fine

KASSIUS OHNO vs. MATT RIDDLE- 7/10
This was a great match, but unless they have some long-term plan for the fact that Riddle is now 4-0 against Ohno (which they did bring up often), then I don’t understand why they dind’t have Ohno face someone they were willing to let him beat.

KUSHIDA vs. CAMERON GRIMES- 6.5/10
This was supposed to be KUSHIDA vs. Raul Mendoza but Cameron Grimes took Mendoza out during his entrance. This was a solid win for KUSHIDA, but I’m not sure it was worth the damage of Grimes losing yet another match where he is desperately trying to be a big deal My hope is that his losses are building to some big snapping moment, but they haven’t done much to push that story as of yet.

ANGEL GARZA VS. LIO RUSH VIDEO PACKAGE- good
They’re having a title match next week. Also announced for next week is Mia Yom vs Dakota Kai.

TOMMASO CIAMPA, KEITH LEE, & DOMINIK DIJAKOVIC vs. UNDISPUTED ERA (Adam Cole, Kyle O’Reilly, & Roderick Strong)- 7.5/10
Great action, but the real story here is going to be Keith Lee, who got to both pin NXT Champion Adam Cole with his finisher and also take out Finn Balor after Balor had just taken out both Cole and Ciampa. Regal came out and announced a three-way between Lee, Ciampa, and Balor to determine the #1 contender to Cole’s title next week.

This was a pretty good episode of NXT. While it was great in the ring, a lot of the booking felt off; like things in some places are dragging and in other places are going too fast.

Was the main event just a no dqs match ? Are six mans always that way? Not only did Balor Interfere, he knocked people into the referee...then said match continues and ends legitimately.
When they come, they'll come at what you love.

It was a ref bump. The ref's back was turned to Balor when Balor ran in and took him out with the shotgun dropkick to Cole.
