AEW postpones Blood & Guts match, Jericho-Hardy set for Dynamite

Citing that the time and circumstances aren't right for their Blood and Guts edition of Dynamite, AEW announced Friday night in a series of tweets that the match will not happen on this week's edition of the show.

It's unclear whether the other matches they had announced for the show, which include a Lucha Bros vs. Best Friends parking lot match and a Wardlow vs. Luchasaurus lumberjack match, are off as well, but a request for that clarity has been made.

In its place, AEW did announce that the show will include Chris Jericho "confronting Matt Hardy, face-to-face, one-on-one, for the first time ever."

The Blood & Guts match is a double cage, War Games-esque affair that was to feature Kenny Omega, Hangman Page, Matt Jackson, Cody, and Hardy against Jericho, Jake Hager, Sammy Guevara, Santana, and Ortiz.

AEW tweeted that the Blood & Guts show will happen "when the time is right" and that their plan is to still run live every Wednesday. Amid the global coronavirus pandemic, they ran live last week at Daily's Place in Jacksonville, FL, in a well received show that had no fans in attendance other than some of the other wrestlers on the show.

This right here is the problem, and has been my problem with this match since it was announced. If this was a feud that was truly worthy of War Games, then you wouldn't be able to postpone the match until "the time is right" because this is a match that should only happen with a feud burning so hot that it must be ended and War Game sis the only way to do so to the satisfaction of all parties involved. When Blood & Guts was announced, only Hager and Dustin were really feuding with each other, and Dustin won't even be in the match. It should never have been booked in the first place. If you wanted to do War Games, do something to build it up until you've got a team like Dustin, Darby, Moxley, Jungle Boy, and Luchasaurus (maybe have Marko originally announced but then have the heels take him out and have Dustin be a surprise replacement).

the "time is right" is a real life circumstance, not a kayfabe one. Also, these two teams have been pretty much feuding for about a year one way or another, I agree that it's not 'blood feud' enough for what is being sold, but it's not exactly a HIAC situation

But what makes it right to not do War Games but still do other matches (both in kayfabe and not)? The real answer is that AEW thinks this gimmick match will pop the gate and they don't want to waste it on a show with no gate, and that's not a good kayfabe answer (and quite frankly, not the kind of non-kayfabe answer you want to give fans if you can avoid it).

They haven't been feuding with each other for most of a year. it was about four or five months, and then pretty much totally died down in December. The Bucks and LAX had their big blow-off and the Bucks moved on to other storylines. Ditto Cody and Jericho. The only vestige of it has been Dustin vs. Hager. If they wanted to do War Games, the time to do it was in December, not March.

And it is an HIAC-like situation. You're right that it's not quite "this feud is going to have an HIAC match because it's the time of year where we do the HIAC PPV," but it does very much feel like they're doing a War Games match because the promotion wants to do War Games (either because they're marks for it or because it willpop a rating/gate, or both), rather than because the feud in question called for it at this moment in time.

to be fair, it's not actually matt hardy, it's the spirit of Damascus using Matt Hardy as his vessel.

That might be true, but that's not how they've been billing him. They've been advertising "Matt Hardy."

Matt hasn't had a chance to explain who he is yet in the actual show, AEW thinks they hired Matt Hardy, they're in for a surprise!

I accept this explanation, but only provided that they later begin to bill him as "The spirit of Damascus in the vessel of Matt Hardy."
