BRM Reviews WWE Money In The Bank

Post by Big Red Machine » Jul 18th, '11, 04:47

WWE Money In The Bank 2011 (7/17/2011)- Chicago, IL

SMACKDOWN MONEY IN THE BANK LADDER MATCH: Sin Cara vs. Cody Rhodes vs. Sheamus vs. Daniel Bryan vs. Wade Barrett vs. Justin Gabriel vs. Heath Slater vs. Kane- 9/10, with a BRILLIANT finish. The Elbows got an awesome pop!

WWE DIVAS TITLE MATCH: Kelly Kelly(c) (w/Eve Torres) vs. Brie Bella (w/Nikki Bella)- 3.5/10. Not very good. It wasn’t exciting, the crowd wasn’t into it, and it just seemed poorly worked.

MARK HENRY vs. THE BIG SHOW- 4.75/10. Short, but well worked and enjoyable. I was disappointed at the lack of the classic spot with two huge guys just standing face to face in the ring, exchanging blows. Good aftermath, too.

RAW MONEY IN THE BANK LADDER MATCH: Alberto Del Rio vs. Kofi Kingston vs. Evan Bourne vs. R-Truth vs. Jack Swagger vs. The Miz vs. Alex Riley vs. Rey Mysterio- 8.5/10. I’m not sure if Rey’s mask coming off was planned or not.

WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE MATCH: Randy Orton(c) vs. Christian- 6.5/10. I hated the finish, but I will admit, it was the only time I have ever seen smarks happy that a title match ended in a DQ. This match was going strong until the finish, but I was also very disappointed with the way that the DQ stip was treated. Orton should not have been using closed fists, or whipping Christian into the stairs. I would absolutely love to see this stip in a CHIKARA match. The aftermath was predicable but good.

WWE TITLE MATCH: John Cena(c) vs. CM Punk- 10/10 A PERFECT combination wrestling, storytelling, and atmosphere.
AFTERMATH- GREAT!

Overall, this is my Show of the Year so far, and Cena vs. Punk is not only a PERFECT 10/10, but also my new pick for MOTY.

I would have given the Christian/Orton match a higher rating. NO ONE gets DQ'd for whipping ppl into the stairs or using closed fists normally, so why would the ref not be even more lenient when the title is at stake?

I do agree that this is the show of the year so far; it'll be the first WWE PPV I ever own on DVD (well, besides the first One Night Stand)

Glad I'm not the only one who thought Cena vs. Punk was perfect. SummerSlam is bound to be even better. (fingers crossed)

Don't get your hopes up. It won't have the same atmosphere.

I didn't see what Meltzer said about it. And I know it won't have the same atmosphere, but Punk's character is/has really getting/gotten over and the story has built so well, we're not gonna be disappointed. Or maybe my PMA just makes me foolishly optimistic. :3

I'm not saying that the match won't be great. I'm just saying that following up one true MOTYC with another one is very rare. The only example I can think of is Joe ad Punk in 2004 (I haven't seen their third match yet, but I have the DVD, and I have seen some people online give it full marks as well.)

Actually, now that I think about it, Davey an Tyler did this, too (I have seen their first and third match from 2010, and own the DVD for the second one, but haven't gotten around to watching it yet). KoW and the Briscoes also supposedly did this last year in their first two matches (I haven't seen the first one yet, but have it on DVD. KoW and the American Wolves, also. I only have one of those on DVD, but haven't watched it yet. Grrr.... I need to get watching more stuff!)

But anyway, in all of these cases aside from Joe vs. Punk, the second match hasn't been as good as the first

What this guy said, its impossible to do, because it counts as a mixture of things, between the atmosphere, the match and the buildup:

The atmosphere: it was blazing in chicago, but will it be the same in LA? not a chance. punk is over, no doubt. but he's more over in chicago.

The match: it was 34 minutes, it was incredible, will they give them 34 minutes more? doubt it. people will have in the back of their minds 'how can they make this different? because iv seen this match already last month'

The buildup: CM Punk was major over in chicago as he was built properly and there was a genuine questionmark over what was going to happen next, this upcoming match doesn't have that same 'will he, won't he' effect.

these three things (there maybe another factor im missing right now) are things that are always harder to do second time around.

Not sure if they were considered by Meltzer, but Malenko v. Eddy in ECW during 95 got better and better each time; as was Savage v. DDP matches during 97 (Spring Stampede, Great American Bash, and Halloween Havoc) and RVD v. Jerry Lynn in 99 (Hardcore Heaven and Living Dangerously; though I kinda forget which show was first). I wanna throw Brock v. Angle from 2003 in there as well (WM17 & their SD! Iron Man Match).

These are all open to debate though...

Yes, those all got better each time, but none of those started at the top. Of the matches you have listed that I have seen, I wouldn't have given any of them 10/10.
