BRM Reviews WWE Over The Limit 2012

WWE Over The Limit 2012 (5/20/2012)- Raleigh, NC

PRE-SHOW MATCH: Kane vs. Zack Ryder- 4.25/10

So you pay for this show and you don’t even get to see the entirety of the first match?

PEOPLE POWER BATTLE ROYAL FOR A SHOT AT EITHER THE INTERCONTINENTAL OR UNITED STATES TITLE- 5/10
Nothing special

CENA vs. JOHNNY ACE VIDEO PACKAGE- I really liked this in the beginning because I thought it was supposed to be like an ad paid for by Johnny Ace to make himself look good and try to grt fans on his side (kind of like the stuff between Dusty and Russo at Victory Road 2004), but once it became an actual video package for the feud, I was disappointed.

WWE WORLD TAG TEAM TILE MATCH: R-Truth & Kofi Kingston(c) vs. American Perfection (w/Vickie Guerrero)- 6.5/10
Decent pre-match promo by Vickie.

EVE, OTUNGA, & OTHER HEELS BACKSTAGE- LOVE IT!

WWE DIVAS TITLE MATCH: Layla(c) vs. Beth Phoenix- 4.75/10

FATAL FOUR-WAY MATCH FOR THE WORLD HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE: Sheamus(c) vs. Randy Orton vs. Chris Jericho vs. Alberto Del Rio- 8/10
A great match with an absolutely awesome finishing sequence. The last few minutes of this match were outstanding.

THE MIZ vs. BRODUS CLAY- 3.75/10

CODY RHODES PROMO- pretty good

WWE INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE MATCH: Cody Rhodes(c) vs. Christian- 5.25/10
An okay match… but I have to ask which idiot thought it was a better idea to take IC Title off of Cody than to take the US Title off of Santino. And when I get my answer, I will try my best to find this person and throw things at him or her.

CM PUNK PROMO- good, but I hated the AJ thing. They have botched this angle SO BADLY!

WWE TITLE MATCH: CM Punk(c) vs. Daniel Bryan- 9/10
The extremely proud indy fan in me is compelled to point out that this extremely hot crowd is in Raleigh, NC. Not in Philly. Not in NYC. Not in Chicago or Dayton or Detroit. This is in Raleigh, NC. ROH didn’t come to North Carloina until after both of these guys were gone, and I don’t think that IWA-MS ever ran a show in North Carolina while Punk was there… and yet this crowd is super-hot for this match, with Dragon even getting those smarky babyface pops. Don’t tell me that indy guys can’t get over.
Anyway, this match was just amazing. It told an awesome story and was very exciting, but the thing I loved most about it was the small tributes to indy wrestling that they worked in. Nigel’s Top-Rope Lariat, Austin Aries’ Shinbreaker intro a back suplex, Super Dragon’s Curb Stomp, the headbutts spot… it felt like a tribute to their roots, and to their friends who never got the chance to wrestle on a stage this big.

RYBACK vs. CAMACHO (w/Hunico)- good squash

NO COUNT-OUTS, NO DISQUALIFICATIONS LOSER LEAVES TOWN MATCH IN WHICH ANYONE WHO INTERFERES WILL BE FIRED: John Cena vs. John Laurinaitis- No rating. Decent segment.
Let me start by saying that this absolutely needed to happen on PPV and it needed to be the main event. That being said, I think this ran on a bit too long, and I thought that Cena should have sold his arm more. Show’s turn got good heat but why didn’t security stop him the minute he stepped over the guard rail? After all, he doesn’t work for WWE anymore.

Overall, a good show from WWE, but mostly because of the strength of the top matches. Most of the undercard didn't deliver.

i disagree with it being the main event, but could you elaborate more on why you think it should??

Because it is a Loser Leaves Town match between one of the biggest stars in the company and the guy kayfabe in charge of the day-to-day operations of the product that we see. Either way, it is a major, momentous thing for one of them to leave- especially the second one, as it means someone new would be in control of everything. This is the same reason why Hogan vs. Sting should have main evented BFG and why Austin vs. Vince and Shane main evented KOTR 1999. It is more important than the title because it could possibly effect the entire landscape of the company in a much more major way.

but i wasn't a loser leaves town, it's just a Ace needs to win to keep his job. either way, i think my problem was that it wasn't really a match, it was a 20 minute squash with a quick twist at the end, this could have been done better, and it didn't really close the show in a high note, hell, it wasn't even a surprise ending.

Really? I was pretty sure that it was. Either way, I think it still warrants being the main event. Yeah, it was more of a comedy squash, and the whole thing was really an excuse to get to the Big Show turn, but, for the kayfabe future of the company, it was more important than either world title match.
