BRM Reviews the 1/30/2014 Impact (bad and disappointing)
They recap the fact that Sting got fired and hype up the new mystery investor. If the new investor hired the Wolves, why can’t he or she just rehire Sting?
NO TAZ! HOORAY!
BACKSTAGE STUFF- apparently Joe and Angle got into a fight with EC III, Spud, and Magnus, but road agents separated them. Okay…
MAGNUS, EC III, & SPUD PROMO- Once again Magnus snubs EC III for no reason at all. So are they trying to turn EC III babybace? WHY?! Thankfully this BS is interrupted by Joe and Angle coming out and the heels running away.
Kurt flubs his promo and mixes metaphors in a very icky way, referring to “the screwing of the herd.” Kurt then says that “saying goodbye to Sting last week was the hardest thing I ever had to do” and talks up how terrible they all are for making Sting leave the company. AJ Styles is never mentioned once.
Magnus says they are jealous. Joe says that they have come here to kick their asses. Magnus then challenges Joe & Kurt to put their careers on the line against EC III and Magnus. Joe responds by challenging Magnus to allow whichever one of them gets the win to become #1 contender. Magnus accepts…. But Dixie comes out and says no. Now Magnus and Dixie are arguing. Dixie says that she can’t take the chance of Magnus losing the title to Joe or Kurt… apparently she wasn’t paying attention because those aren’t the stips! All Joe or Kurt could do is earn a future title match, which Dixie could screw them out of at her leisure…. Then Magnus just overrules Dixie because apparently he can do that. HOW? She’s the f*cking president of the company! How can he overrule her?
THE CAMERAMAN TRIES TO FIND OUT WHO THE SECRET INVESTOR IS- The Wolves stop him and promise that all of our questions will be answered later. Seeing the Wolves in suits is really weird.
MADISON RAYNE & VELVET SKY vs. LEI’D TAPA & GAIL KIM-2.5/10
Madison is the champion, but she Velvet come out to Velvet’s music because the title is irrelevant. Babyfaces win clean in a very short match.
SABIN & VELVET SEGMENT- GREAT!
Sabin is a douche and gives Velvet an ultimatum: apologize to me right now, or we’re done… so Velvet tells him that they are done.
Tenay tells us that you can see how concerned Dixie is about this secret investor thing by looking at her Tweets. JB says that you can tell how concerned she is about it by HER ACTIONS AND FACIAL EXPRESSIONS HERE TONIGHT. I am SO glad JB is on commentary tonight.
KURT & JOE BACKSTAGE- to preempt a gang attack by the heels, they are apparently going to beat them all up, first. They go find Bobby Roode and attack him. When we come back from commercial, it turns out that they apparently didn’t beat him up. Instead, Joe threatens to murder Bobby Roode if he interferes. HOW F*CKING STUPID ARE THEY?!
The graphic they have for the big tag team main event does not mention any of the stips… even the one where Joe and Angle’s careers are on the line. PRODUCTION FAIL!
JAMES STORM & GUNNER SEGMENT-
Storm pointlessly retcons that he and Gunner were friends before Gunner ever came to TNA. Gunner comes out and says that he and Storm came to TNA for one reason: Then he lists three different things.
He says that he thinks that have done enough to be remembered both as a tag team and as individuals. That made me laugh. Storm definitely has, but Gunner? Really?
They tried to put this over like they were old friends who have been travelling the roads together for years, as if we are completely supposed to forget that James Storm was in TNA from just about day one, while Gunner only showed up a few years ago. Gunner says that he had to make a decision for the good of his family and that Storm would have made the same decisions. Gunner rambled on about being in the marines and not knowing if he was going to die and leaving it all in the ring every night… he basically said a whole lot of disconnected nothing.
Storm admits that he was jealous of Gunner and they make up with each other, so at least this went somewhere. Then Bad Influence came out and accused Storm of lying. They cut an entertaining heel promo, and challenged them to a tag team match with the Feast or Fired Briefcase on the line… and for some idiotic reason, the babyfaces accept it.
Also, for some reason, this doesn’t need Dixie’s approval, so the match starts right now.
TAG TEAM MATCH FOR THE FEAST OR FIRED BRIEFCASE: Gunner(c) & James Storm vs. Bad Influence- 4.5/10
DIXIE ORDERS SPUD TO FIND OUT WHO THE MYSTERY INVESTOR IS- well… I guess the Wolves will be murdering Spud.
DIXIE & BOBBY ROODE SEGMENT- Good
Dixie yells at the attorney from last week on the phone. Roode says that Dixie promised him a world title match if he helped Magnus retain the title, and he wants that shot at Lockdown. He gives her one week to make a decision, and says that he won’t help her until she makes her decision.
EY & ODB BACKSTAGE- ODB points out that Abyss might be out of control. This was actually a good segment between these two. This might be the first time I have ever typed that.
ROCKSTAR SPUD & WOLVES SEGMENT-
Awesome heel stuff from Spud. Then he calls out the Wolves. He is going to f*cking die.
Spud was awesome here! “I’ve seen some of those cop shows. I’ve seen Magnum T.A.” He tried to “interrogate” the Wolves by shinning a flashlight in their faces, but Eddie and Davey completely no-sold it. Spud yells at them and then slaps Davey… and Eddie just got this look on his face that said “this f*cker is going to die and it will be hilarious.”
Unfortunately Spud was not murdered. They just gave him an alarm clock. Eddie tells Spud that Dixie will find out who the investor is when everyone else does. He also says that the investor has ordered that anyone who interferes in the main event will be fired.
TNA WORLD TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH: Bro-Mans(c) (w/Zema Ion) vs. Eric Young & Abyss-
They accidentally put the X-Division Title graphic on the screen instead of the tag team title graphic. This show was not live. There is no excuse for a f*ck-up like this not being corrected.
Abyss got the hot tag and ran wild. Zema Ion climbed a turnbuckle to try to interfere, but Abyss grabbed him by the throat… and the referee started a five count, threatening to DQ Abyss for performing an illegal move… on someone who isn’t even in the match. HUH?
Abyss gets and angry and grabs the referee. EY tries to talk him out of attacking the ref, but Abyss does it anyone. The idiot ref deserves it for making a moronic decision. Abyss chokeslammed EY, too. Tenay refers to this as “a scary situation.”
Abyss goes to leave, but EY gets a mic and says “we’ve only got one experiment left. Do you want to get crazy? I said, ‘do you want to get crazy?! I invented crazy!” Then he challenged Abyss to a Monster’s Ball match next week.
EDDIE INTIMIDATES THE CAMERAMAN WHILE DAVEY TALKS TO THE INVESTOR- fun. A bit of character for Eddie.
SAM SHAW & CHRISTY VIDEO-
Yeah. Apparently the Impact cameraman is now spying on employees OUTSIDE OF THE IMPACT ZONE, too. And he appears to have somehow installed a secret camera in Sam Shaw’s house! What the f*ck? And of all the people to do this to, he picks the psychopath? Does he have a death wish?
A few months ago we saw Sam Shaw’s living room, which was fully decorated. Apparently his bedroom is almost entirely barren.
Wait… now Sam Shaw apparently has a secret stalker shrine to Christy Hemme (think Helga from Hey Arnold)… and somehow, the cameraman got a secret camera in there. Of course, this was all broadcast on Impact. How much do you want to bet that Christy makes no mention of this at all on next week’s show?
BULLY RAY PROMO- he challenges Anderson to one final match: a casket match. Anderson comes out and asks him what he will do after he puts Anderson in the casket. Bully says that after that he will piledrive Anderson’s wife and children. Why does he need to put Anderson in a casket before doing that?
So Bully is about two inches away from Anderson when he threatens to assault the man’s wife and newborn children… does Anderson attack him? Nope. He just goes about his business cutting a promo…. Then he finally attacks Bully and I guess we’re having a casket match now?... or not. Bully runs away.
They showed an idiotic Kurt Angle video package playing up the idiotic “cyborg” nickname, using just the clip from last week of Kurt doing the moonsault off of the cage. Compare this to the earlier Joe video package, which was completely awesome.
EC III & MAGNUS BACKSTAGE- they argue. It is stupid. Then Dixie shows up and they make nice.
MATCH WITH A TON OF STIPS: Samoa Joe & Kurt Angle vs. Magnus & Ethan Carter III- 4.25/10
- If Joe & Kurt win, the guy who gets the fall gets a TNA World Heavyweight Title match.
- If Magnus & EC III win, Joe & Kurt will be fired.
- Anyone who interferes will be fired.
Joe makes Magnus tap in an extremely short, underwhelming match. Dixie comes out and is angry, telling Magnus “I told you this could happen!” Kurt and Joe cut babyfaces promos, with Kurt announcing that he will be inducted into the HOF… except that we already knew this was happening, so that’s a kayfabe screw-up.
Dixie demands that the investor come out and it is…
MVP.
Well… that was disappointing.
I didn’t think MVP was that great a wrestler, and I don’t think he will help creative, so I have no faith that this will somehow improve the product.
Another bad Impact with a lot of disappointments.

because that never happens. Wrestlers always challenge each other without having to go to paper work. Only big title-ppv-main-event-matches should go through paper work, otherwise it looks stupid having to wait for the office to approve them. Re: BRM Reviews the 1/30/2014 Impact (bad and disappointing)
All matches have to go through kayfabe paperwork. We only see it for the big ones. In order for a match to be official (and thus its results to matter, it needs to be sanctioned by the promotion. Sometimes this happens post-facto, but we are usually told via the announcers that they "have just gotten word" that the authority figure has sanctioned this match.cero2k wrote:because that never happens. Dixie in particular has shown that gets very unhappy when she feels that people are stepping on her toes in general and by booking their own matches in particular.
Yes, a man's word is important... but (especially where heel authority figures are concerned) the way we make sure that people follow through on the stips is by contracts. If Dixie doesn't sanction this match, then Joe or Angle winning is irrelevant. Magnus is offering a stip that he doesn't actually have the power to enforce. Magnus can try his best to convince Dixie to give Joe the title shot, but if the authority figure doesn't want it to be official, it isn't official.
And as for Magnus overruling Dixie... she is the company president! How can he overrule her? Just because Magnus gave his word doesn't mean that he can just do whatever he wants without Dixie's approval.
Except it really wasn't a TBP reunion because there was no hype for it. It's just them teaming together and TNA decided to bill it as a "reunion." They should have played Madison's music. She is the champ. She is a bigger star than a stable that has been dead for two years.cero2k wrote:They came out to the Beautiful People's Music, it was a TBP reunion. Because they have no assurances at all that Roode won't attack them. Yeah, Joe is vicious... but Roode is no slouch himself, could hire others to help protect him, and could probably even get Joe arrested for threatening to murder him. They just got lucky that Roode decided to stop working for Dixie and that the secret investor made his "anyone who interferes will be fired" decree. They didn't know any of this at the time.cero2k wrote:what? why?Big Red Machine wrote: KURT & JOE BACKSTAGE- to preempt a gang attack by the heels, they are apparently going to beat them all up, first. Except that the style of the footage does not allow me to do so. If they just had the camera in the room with them like WWE does, I would be fine with it. If you have the camera poking through the window from awkward angles like the cameraman is trying to hide his presence from them, it is TNA purposely telling us that someone is spying.cero2k wrote:suspension of disbelief! don't think there' s always a cameraman standing there. It's not "The Carters," though. It's just EC III. He and Dixie are always buddies. And if he didn't want to offend the Carters, why would he be snubbing EC III at every opportunity?cero2k wrote:this was a nice development, i don't wanna see that direction just yet, but it shows that Magnus doesn't really like the Carter's, he just knows he needs to be around them to stay the champ.Big Red Machine wrote: EC III & MAGNUS BACKSTAGE- they argue. I get that he's not Jimmy Jacobs or Dean Ambrose of Joseph Park or someone else who is known for being able to convey emotions with just a look, but if you want to show that he is only putting up with the Carters so that he can stay champ, the best way to do that would be with facial expressions. Let the camera linger on him looking remorseful after the Carters leave the room. Stuff like that. This all just smacks of typical Russo "infighting in a stable just because" (and yes, I do believe the "Russo is back" rumor).
Fair enoughcero2k wrote:it wasn't an announcement, he's just sticking it in Dixie's face that she needs to start writing checksBig Red Machine wrote: Joe makes Magnus tap in an extremely short, underwhelming match. I was expecting someone... bigger. Someone who carries more weight. Like Tommy Dreamer or Harley Race or Les Thatcher. I'm not saying it doesn't make sense. I'm just saying it feels kind of lame.cero2k wrote:well, what were you expecting? MVP is perfect for this position, he was always someone who is supposed to have tons of money. I didn’t think MVP was that great a wrestler, and I don’t think he will help creative, so I have no faith that this will somehow improve the product.
As for the thing about helping creative, one of the major rumors was that the investor would be Tommy Dreamer and that Tommy had joined creative. Also, even if it was someone like Adam Pearce (who they could make a big deal by billing as a five-time NWA World Heavyweight Champion) or Dreamer, while they wouldn't excite me from a kayfabe POV, I would be excited to see how creative would change with a guy like that processing some of the decisions. MVP does nothing for me in any way. This new surprise was supposed to be something to get excited about, and (for me) it totally failed.
How can you say it was great? None of the matches were any good and all we got was a WWE midcarder showing up to be a voice of kayfabe opposition to Dixie (which they already did a few years ago with Hogan/Bischoff and The Network) when we are only a few months into Dixie's heel turn. It's crappy business as usual in TNA.cero2k wrote:I thought it was a great Impact. see, it's not a WWE midcarder, it's the former IWGP Intercontinental Champion we're talking about. First ever may i add.Big Red Machine wrote: How can you say it was great? None of the matches were any good and all we got was a WWE midcarder showing up to be a voice of kayfabe opposition to Dixie
let's be realistic here, who could even follow Hogan and Bischoff coming in as authority that would be relevant to the fans (thus no les tacher), realistic (tommy dreamer having money? nope), free agent (no dibiase), and that is not an old timer which seems to be something that TNA will be trying to the first time ever?
i honestly can't think of one right now
i never honestly watch a weekly show for the wrestling, that's what PPVs are for, otherwise i'd be so tired of wrestling by now, regardless of that, it was a good show, it got me excited about things, i enjoy watching Spud, and Shaw, and Bad Influence, The Wolves, hell, i'm really starting to enjoy Dixie. Maybe it's because i haven't watched RAW since summerslam, but i've been really really enjoying TNA, I thought Genesis were great shows.

let's be realistic here, who could even follow Hogan and Bischoff coming in as authority that would be relevant to the fans (thus no les tacher), realistic (tommy dreamer having money? nope), free agent (no dibiase), and that is not an old timer which seems to be something that TNA will be trying to the first time ever?
i honestly can't think of one right now
Larry Zbyszko could have worked, too, based off of his connection with TNA. There are any number of guys whom they just could have made it work for if they had the announcers react like they are a huge deal and explain why. Not that this example is particularly realistic, but if Tenay and JB had said:
OH MY G-D IT'S GABE SAPOLSKY! He is internationally recognized as one of the best talent-scouts in the industry. He's the man who found Samoa Joe and Christopher Daniels and Doug Williams... and now he is here in TNA! And no wonder he brought the Wolves in! I wonder who else he will be bringing in next?
And it would have worked (for a more realistic version of this, you probably could have used Bill Behrens or someone like that)
The matches don't have to be awesome, but I'd like to see one or two that are at least good. And in TNA's case, they don't even have PPV for their to be matches on, so they need to deliver more on TV.cero2k wrote: i never honestly watch a weekly show for the wrestling, that's what PPVs are for, otherwise i'd be so tired of wrestling by now, regardless of that, it was a good show, it got me excited about things, i enjoy watching Spud, and Shaw, and Bad Influence, The Wolves, hell, i'm really starting to enjoy Dixie. Maybe it's because i haven't watched RAW since summerslam, but i've been really really enjoying TNA, I thought Genesis were great shows.

Zbyszko? too old, and who cares about Zbyszko, really? TNA is trying to move away from bringing in old timers i think, why would they bring someone like Zbyszko who a lot of the casual fans now a days may not know much about. And i think you say it perfectly, if they had competent announcing, you could have probably bought MVP, but just as I would never buy Zbyszko, you didn't get MVP.
and not being actual PPVs, doesn't mean their free 'PPVs' don't get quality matches. Genesis had some decent bouts, at the usual TNA PPV level if you wish to see it that way.

Genesis had two good matches, and it was only one on each show (Bully vs. Anderson and Angle vs. Roode). A lot of the matches could have been good if given time, but instead they decided to try to squeeze tons of sh*t onto the shows, just like they do with every Impact.cero2k wrote:

It's still totally doable. The problem is that they load their big shows up with so much pointless talking sh*t. The entire first HALF HOUR of Genesis part 1 was all taking. Then they wasted more time with a pointless twelve person tag team match. They wasted so much time on both Genesis shows with pointless talking (almost all of which involved the Carters). I like Spud. I really do. His stoogery is by far the best thing about TNA right now (because, for some reason, they aren't going to have they apparently Wolves wrestle for a few more weeks), but these "PPV Impacts" are not the place for it! Between the two Genesis shows, they EASILY could have had the time they needed for Anderson vs. Bully, Angle vs. Roode, the Knockouts' Title match, all of the stuff with Aries, Velvet, and Sabin, Sting vs. EC III, Sting vs. Magnus, and Gunner vs. Storm.cero2k wrote:they unfortunately only have 2 hrs a week for all they want to cover.Big Red Machine wrote:Genesis had two good matches, and it was only one on each show (Bully vs. Anderson and Angle vs. Roode). That's only seven matches for four hours of TV.

yeah, i do agree that TNA does talk a lot and Dixie's group's segments are getting to an Evolution level now. But i do think that at least half of those segments have been useful or needed, just thinking about this week's, the only segments i thought were unnecessary were the joe/angle/roode thing and the eddie edwards/camera guy one, and i think that the roode/dixie, the one where dixie sends spud to investigate could have been worked for youtube with just a small reference from tenay.Big Red Machine wrote: It's still totally doable. The half-hour one on Genesis Part 1 could have been severely shortened (and the tag match cut out altogether). The entire segment with Sting on Genesis part 2 could have also been totally cut out, as well as the Joe vs. Spud match and all of the stuff with Spud and various Carters backstage.cero2k wrote:yeah, i do agree that TNA does talk a lot and Dixie's group's segments are getting to an Evolution level now. see, with those you mentioned, i thought they were good and useful to some point, but not for a PPV-like show like Genesis was supposed to be. they would have worked for a normal impact, and some of the Spud stuff could pass as the youtube24/7 thing. But useful at the end.Big Red Machine wrote:The half-hour one on Genesis Part 1 could have been severely shortened (and the tag match cut out altogether). I think that TNA really needs to get in the habit of following one single and easy rule when doing segments. Don't book segments that are long enough to have to run commercials in between, it's better to break them up into smaller segments around the show or something, but i do remember getting annoyed at the 30 minute segment

Exactly. Don't do them on the PPV Impacts. But they did. As I said, they could have easily made enough time for seven featured matches over the two weeks.cero2k wrote:see, with those you mentioned, i thought they were good and useful to some point, but not for a PPV-like show like Genesis was supposed to be. they would have worked for a normal impact, and some of the Spud stuff could pass as the youtube24/7 thing. so going back to the original point, the segments while not optimal, i still found good or useful and didn't affect my watching experience, even with them i still enjoyed the shows and thought they were good. it's hard to judge these shows because they not exactly PPVs, but not exactly normal impacts either.Big Red Machine wrote: Exactly. Re: BRM Reviews the 1/30/2014 Impact (bad and disappointing)
I wanted to comment about a couple of thingz re: the Bully Ray & Anderson confrontation.
Q: Why doez Bully Ray have to put Anderson in a coffin first in order to pile drive hiz wife and children?
A: I think Bully Ray wuz pretty clear in explaining why he wants to put Anderson in a coffin. Anderson took away Bully Ray'z whole life. Nobody at any point suggested that putting Anderson in a coffin iz actually a necessary pre-requisite to pile driving Anderson'z wife and children. He wuz asked what he'z going to do after he puts Anderson in a coffin, and that wuz hiz answer. Also, it should be pretty obvious that having Anderson out of the way makes it a lot eazier to get to hiz wife and children.
Regarding Anderson'z response to that threat: Anderson doezn't "react" and instantly loze hiz shit, and this iz classic Anderson character... controlled, confident and calculating. Both guyz were "in character" really well here I thought.

I see what you're saying, especially about Anderson's reaction, but Bully has been threatening to Piledrive Anderson's wife and kids for months now. So why does he suddenly now decide that he needs to have this casket match first?e-moose wrote:I wanted to comment about a couple of thingz re: the Bully Ray & Anderson confrontation.
