The Daily Beast has a new article asking “if WWE is too scared to go LGBT.”

The article talks about Darren Young coming out to TMZ back in 2013 but says WWE hasn’t let the character come out. They spoke to Stephanie McMahon at ESPN’s ESPY awards last week and she commented on the Darren Young character:

“Darren Young was the first WWE superstar to really come out as being homosexual, but his character in the show is not. At least, we haven’t done anything with it either way—just yet.”

Stephanie also suggested that a gay character could happen in WWE:

“It could very well pop up in WWE because we are all about what’s relevant, and what’s pop culture, and what people want to see. So if there is an opportunity, we might just take it.”

Quite the political answer from Steph.

Why does a character have to be gay? Why can't people just accept a superstar for who he is, and he just happens to be gay? I feel like a gay character is dangerous because it would walk that thin line between being culturally relevant and offensive.

Oh yeah. And especially considering the way WWE tried to book Alberto as babyface. Can you imgine what the person in the Big Show role would have to do/say and how much outrage that would cause?

god, i hate the attention whores they've become, when will they realize that they could be the ones setting the trends, not following them

I'm with you there. I was actually having this debate (more like a monologue, since he wasn't really listening!) with my mom's boyfriend about the state of the WWE as of late, and the state of wrestling on the whole, and I think I said something along the lines of that wrestling is losing popularity because they're trying to compete with all other forms of entertainment and losing sight of the wrestling aspect of it in the process. If they were to focus more on the wrestling part I think they'd gain back some of the fans they've lost in recent years (those people that say "I used to watch WWE years ago") who were interested in the wrestling, not the story.

I just want wrestling in my wrestling.

im all for a good story wrestling has always been a story but the difference in today and the glory days is at the end of the feud or even leading up to a climax they settled it in the ring, now ring work is almost secondary they took a talented athlete billed him as a dancer most fans hated it the only reason that the dance got over people were laughing at him and making fun of the gimmick. all a true fan wants is to see wrestlers competing for what at one time was the richest title out there, the're is a reason fans deemed the ROH title the most prestigious because its a wrestling show with wrestlers wrestling.

Agreed. The story should always revolve around the wrestling, not the other way around.

it's ok to sometimes have stories that happen to include wrestling, it's just important to have a balance of both types

Cero i agree with you in some certain aspects like the famous kane vs taker brother angle classic back and forth mind games and such but then the pay off was a classic wm 14 match, jake roberts and rick rude feud over jake's wife but the payoff was wrestling lol all im saying is having a storyline for the fun of it don't make sense to me, im a christian minister and i don't want an angle based on a minister preaching and fighting its stupid lol just get a good story and wrestle
