"The new XFL will kick off in 2020. And quite frankly, we're gonna give the game of football back to fans," Vince McMahon said this afternoon as he announced the revival of the XFL.

At the start, there will be eight teams, 40-man rosters, a 10-game regular season, and a postseason with two semifinals and a championship game. They haven't decided on which cities will have teams yet, but the league won't be using a franchise model and there won't be individual owners.

Plans are for the season to start in January or early February, which is around the end of the NFL calendar.

There will be a multi-platform approach to presenting games, with them available on big screens and mobile devices. McMahon said there's been no initial talks with broadcast partners but claimed there's interest out there.

On the subject of WWE, McMahon said the XFL revival will have no affect on his current role. There will also be no crossover of talent between the groups. McMahon said WWE isn't involved with the XFL because the initial $100 million investment was too rich.

McMahon said the quality of the human being will be as important as the quality of the player when it comes to who plays in the XFL. Later, he said the league will have nothing to do with politics and will stay out of social issues.

The XFL will be hiring experienced executives and McMahon won't be the public face of the league.

McMahon said they'd be listening to fans, players, coaches, medical experts, technology executives, members of the media, and anyone else who loves football. He mentioned eliminating half time, having fewer commercial breaks, making the game faster, and simplifying the rules as possible ideas.

The original XFL ran for one unsuccessful season in 2001. An ESPN 30 for 30 documentary on the league premiered last year.

He will never compete with the NFL, ever. Much like he has a stranglehold on the Wrestling market, he'll never get near the market share that the NFL has on American Football. The XFL was a failure, a joke, and more of a spectacle than a sport.

That said, there IS a market for an NFL alternative. I love football, I want to keep watching it after the NFL season ends, and they seem to be addressing EVERYTHING the modern fan is frustrated with in their concept. There's money to be made here, and I think if they execute this properly they'll pull it off! The NFL lost A LOT of viewers this year because of the political BS.

They should NOT be calling it the XFL, it's tainted and "X's" in front of everything isn't cool anymore. Aside from that, they've clearly done their homework on what the fans want. I didn't see a single boob in that video, which is a great start when trying to deviate from their old model. If they do bring in football people to do the football, and keep the carnies out and let them stick to the wrestlestuff, they could be a solid #2. Not sure what they plan on trying that Arena Football hasn't, but I'm excited to find out...

he wants to come at the NFL like he once did with the NWA, except he'll at most become the ECW to the NFL

You think? I mean, he's running in their off season... not directly competing... like, the opposite of how he went after the NWA.
Even if he does wind up the ECW to the NFL, that's way better than his first try.

Instead of the XFL, they should rename it the WFF (World Football Federation). People'd go nuts!
