Cage in a Cage

Striker tells us that both Matanza and Mil Muteres will return to action soon after their spot through the roof last week.

STEEL CAGE MATCH FOR AN AZTEC MEDALLION: Cage vs. Johnny Mundo (w/Taya)- 7.5/10
Striker points out that this is an unfortunately rare modern example of a steel cage actually being used correctly in wrestling (no one gets out, no one gets in). Barely a minute later, Vampiro says that he hopes that Mundo doesn’t run away from Cage, proving that Vampiro just completely tunes Matt out when he is talking (the lucky bastard).
(Edit: I’m rescinding some of the credit I gave Striker in this paragraph because he later told us that you could win this match via pinfall, submission, or escaping the cage. Winning a cage match by escaping the cage goes against the â€"underground fight club” feel of Lucha Underground.)
(Edit #2: I’m rescinding even more of this credit as Taya managed to interfere in the match anyway by climbing into the cage. I know this isn’t Striker’s fault, but at the same time, it still makes him look dumb. Also, someone should have had him redo the commentary for that spot in post-production.)

They were having a really great cage match but Taya’s interference kind of killed it for me. Don’t get me wrong: the stuff they did with her in the cage here does make sense if this is the blow-off to this feud (Cage not only foiled her plan but actually used her own plan against her to neutralize her, and once this was done he was finally able to defeat Mundo), but I just REALLY HATE interference in cage matches, especially when it involves someone actually climbing into the cage and doing a bunch of spots (not saying she did that many, but pretty much anything is too much for my tastes).

During this match, Vampiro casually said â€"I’ve been alive for a thousand years.” This is Lucha Underground so it is entirely possible that he wasn’t using hyperbole, but at the same time this is Vampiro who often just kind of says sh*t, so I have no idea if this line was meant to hint at something or not.

DARIO CUETO PROVIDES US WITH â€"BREAKING NEWS”- Dario doesn’t have all of the details but â€"Angelico has had an unfortunate accident and has to be rushed to the hospital.” â€"However… the match will go on” with Ivelisse & Son of Havoc as the only members of their team.
This is Dario Cueto here, so I have no idea if he is telling the truth (or the truth as far as he knows it) about any of this. It’s not even impossible that Dario himself is behind it for whatever his own reasons might be.

TRIOS TOURNAMENT ELIMINATION FINALS FOR THE LUCHA UNDERGROUND TRIOS TITLES: Ivelisse, Son of Havoc, (& Angelico)(c) vs. Rey Mysterio Jr., Dragon Azteca Jr., & Prince Puma vs. The Crew & Joey Ryan vs. Jack Evans, P.J. Black, & Fenix- 7.75/10
I really didn’t like the cutesy mirror-image spots they did at the beginning. That stuff is SOOOOO overused nowadays and it’s rarely done in ways that really feel natural (and even when it is it has been so overused that it usually feels like they’re doing it just for the sake of doing it and so it doesn’t feel natural anyway).
Joey Ryan and the Crew are eliminated after Joey and Castro argue, allowing Ivelisse to recover enough to catch Castro in a small package when he finally turns his attention back to her.
They did a spot where Jack Evans booted Ivelisse in the face, and while she was down Jack bragged that â€"she actually thinks she’s ‘the baddest bitch in the building,’ but everybody knows that I’m the baddest bitch in the building!” Heel Jack Evans is SOOOOOO great! Soon after that, Jack eliminated Ivelisse with some help from P.J. In the end, Jack’s antics indirectly led to his team losing. Great match and lots of fun. Team Super Mega Ultra Technico are your new Lucha Underground Trios Champions.

VAMPIRO & PENTAGON JR. IN THEIR… DOJO? LAIR?- decent.
Pentagon Jr. is in a motorized wheelchair because Matanza broke his back a few weeks ago. Vamp orders him to â€"get up.” He tries but he can’t, so Vamp decides to motivate him by pouring hot wax on him. Pentagon Jr. manages to push himself out of the chair but immediately falls on his face and can’t get up. Vampiro tells him he is weak.

A GREAT show from Lucha Underground.

STUPID ANNOUNCER QUOTES:
1. Vampiro said that Cage â€"has one thing on his mind.” Then Vamp proceeded to list about three or four different things.

2. Vampiro â€"Did you notice that Cage isn’t even trying to win the match?”
This one is a double whammy as not only did Vamp say this right after Striker had just spend a good forty-five seconds pointing out that Cage just kept hitting Mundo with moves and wasn’t going for pinfalls, but Vamp said while Cage had Mundo locked in the first submission of the match.

3. Vampiro says that Ivelisse â€"has the world ‘evil’ in her name.”
Not if you spell right.

4. When Castro did the Gedo Clutch, Striker referred to it as a â€"unique pin.”
Considering that it’s called the â€"GEDO Clutch” but Cortez Castro was the guy who used it, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that it no longer qualifies as â€"unique.”
