WWF Wrestlemania 2000 (4/2/2000)- Anaheim, CA
THE BIG BOSSMAN & BULL BUCHANAN vs. D’LO BROWN & THE GODFATHER- 3/10. Boring, but competently performed.
BATTLE ROYALE FOR THE WWF HARDCORE TITLE: DUD! Just a bunch of people hitting each other with crap for 15 minutes. There some parts where it came close to having a story, but it still deserves a big fat DUD!
HEAD CHEESE (w/Chester McCheeserton) vs. TEST & ALBERT (w/Trish Stratus)- 4/10
TRIANGLE LADDER MATCH FOR THE WWF WORLD TAG TEAM TITLES: The Dudley Boyz(c) vs. The Hardy Boys vs. Edge & Christian- 8.5/10. Definitely the highlight of the night. By a mile.
CATFIGHT WITH VAL VENIS AS SPECIAL GUEST REFEREE: The Kat (w/Mae Young) vs. Terri (w/The Fabulous Moolah)- no rating. Okay comedy match, and Moolah and Terri cheating actually did get some heat from me. Apparently you win this match by throwing your opponent to the floor.
THE RADICALZ (Eddie Guerrero, Dean Malenko, & Perry Saturn) vs. Chyna & Too Cool- 5.75/10. Chyna going low on Saturn and Malenko made no sense. She makes up for that, though, by doing what seems to be a bodyslam version of the Ball-Plex to Eddie. Everyone played their roles well.
TWO OUT OF THREE FALLS MATCH IN WHICH THE INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE IS ON THE LINE IN THE FIRST FALL AND THE EUROPEAN TITLE IS ON THE LINE IN THE SECOND FALL: Kurt Angle(c)(c) vs. Chris Benoit vs. Chris Jericho- 7/10. Good booking.
RIKISHI & KANE (w/Paul Bearer) vs. ROAD DOGG & X-PAC (w/Tori)- 3.5/10. Very disappointing.
POST-MATCH SHENANIGANS- fun
FOUR WAY ELIMINATION MATCH FOR THE WWF TITLE IN WHICH ELIMINATIONS CAN ONLY BE RECORDED BY PINFALL: Triple H(c) (w/Stephanie McMahon-Helmsley) vs. The Rock (w/Vince McMahon) vs. The Big Show (w/Shane McMahon) vs. Mick Foley (w/Linda McMahon)- 7.75/10. Pretty disappointing, considering everything involved. The first mistake here was with The Big Show being eliminated less than five minutes in. It made it seem like he didn’t belong in the main event at Mania. I also thought that the whole thing with Foley breaking up people’s pins made no sense. Once this match narrowed down to Triple H vs. The Rock, it got awesome though. I thought the finish didn’t work so well because the did the same spot twice in a row (Rocky kicked out the first time, then stayed down the second. With a spot like that, where you have someone turning with a chair shot, that should either be the finish, or not be similar to the finish (it can be part of the finishing sequence, but it loses its shock the second time you do that spot). I thought the stuff they did with the McMahons worked very well, though, and Steph’s facials really helped make that work.
AFTERMATH- great at first… then bad. The stuff with the McMahon’s was good, but The Rock should not have been standing tall at the end of the night. I would have had The Rock take Shane out, then start punching away at Vince, but not hit him with a finisher. I would have had Steph get in his face and slap him, and have The Rock go for the Rock Bottom on her, but have Triple H make the save. Then Vince and Hunter have a staredown, ending in a handshake. It think this would have done a great job at symbolizing the mutual acceptance between Triple H and Vince. This would have made it more than Vince just putting up with Triple H for Steph’s sake. This would have opened the door to the actual, respectful relationship that would soon develop between Triple H and Vince.
Overall, a very disappointing Wrestlemania. One of the worst I have ever seen.
