WWE Summer Slam 2002 (8/25/2002)- Long Island, NY
KURT ANGLE vs. REY MYSTERIO JR- 8/10
I really didn’t like Rey jumping Kurt from behind, but other than that, this was AWESOME! Great story telling, cool spots, and great action.
STEPH & BISCHOFF BACKSTAGE- good. I loved the way that the brand rivalry worked, and am very disappointed that is has been completely forgotten recently.
RIC FLAIR vs. CHRIS JERICHO- 6/10
PAUL HEYMAN GIVES BROCK LESNAR A PEP TALK- AWESOME!
EDGE vs. EDDIE GUERRERO- 7.5/10
UNAMERICANS PROMO- good
WWE WORLD TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH: Lance Storm & Christian(c) vs. Booker T & Goldust- 6.5/10
BISCHOFF AND STEPH- wasn’t as good this time. Steph claiming that women belong “on top” in the wrestling business is hilarious when consider that Steph herself, who has booking power, didn’t book a singles women’s match ON SUMMER SLAM, and their argument about RVD and Benoit sounded so scripted that it was annoying.
WWE INTERCONTINENTAL TITLE MATCH: Chris Benoit(c) vs. Rob Van Dam- 7.5/10
Great stuff here.
UNDERTAKER vs. TEST- 5.75/10
TRIPLE H-SHAWN MICHAELS VIDEO PACKAGE- great
NON-SANCTIONED MATCH: Triple H vs. Shawn Michaels- A PERFECT 10/10
Tons of violence, tons of hate, tons of emotion, and awesome story-telling, combined with the two sledgehammer shots after the match combine to tell the story of a man who came back and was willing to put everything on the line to get revenge on his former friend and to prove him wrong. To prove that he could still go. That he wasn’t weak and helpless. And he did it… only to have it taken all away from afterwards.
HOWARD FINKEL & TRISH SEGMENT- eh. I think a lot of my dislike for this segment was that it didn’t feel right to this directly after Triple H crippled HBK.
WWE UNDISPUTED TITLE MATCH: The Rock(c) vs. Brock Lesnar (w/Paul Heyman)- 8/10
Awesome finishing sequence. I didn’t like The Rock using a low blow, and there was a point where they were on the outside for WAY too long, but other than that, this was awesome. Rocky is a great babyface and Brock is a great heel, but for some reason, the crowd was very split.
Bonus Features:
HULK HOGAN vs. BROCK LESNAR (w/Paul Heyman) (from the 8/8/2002 Smackdown)- 6.75/10
This only went ten minutes, but they did a good job of making it feel like it went longer. The aftermath was amazing.
POST MATCH INTERVIEWS- everyone was good
KURT ANGLE PROMO FROM HEAT- very good
OTHER ASSORTED RANDOM STUFF- good
Overall, an ABSOLUTELY AWESOME show from WWE. Pick up if you can find it.
