ROH Killer Instinct (10/6/2012)- Rahway, NJ

“THE PRODIGY” MIKE BENNETT (w/"Brutal" Bob Evans) vs. Michael Elgin (w/Truth Martini)- 5.5/10

THE BRAVADO BROTHERS vs. 3.0- 6/10
Good debut for 3.0. They really seemed to live up to Kevin Kelly’s hype of them as “tag team specialists.” The post-match angle seems to guarantee a rematch somewhere down the line, so that is good.

QT MARSHALL vs. BOBBY FISH- 6/10
Good showing for both guys, but I think giving them a lot of time would have gotten both guys over a lot more, which was especially important for Fish because of the spot they wanted him in at Final Battle.

THREE TEAM ELIMINATION MATCH FOR THE ROH WORLD TAG TEAM TITLES: Steve Corino & Jimmy Jacobs(c) vs. Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin vs. Rhett Titus & BJ Whitmer- 5.75/10
Another eh match solely for the purpose to trying to get some more heat in this horrible WGTT vs. Rhett Titus feud. All of the distractions and interferences just feel so un-ROH.

KYLE O’REILLY vs. RODERICK STRONG (w/Truth Martini)- 6.75/10
During this match, QT Marshall came out to whine on commentary, and the camera kept cutting to him and Kevin Kelly sitting there on commentary rather than Roddy and Kyle in the ring wrestling (and to make things even worse, Marshall wasn’t even close to entertaining, either). The match itself was a significant bit shorter than I expected it to be, but was still very good (especially for the time it went).

NO TIME LIMIT MATCH: Davey Richards vs. Mike Mondo-7/10
Mondo’s best match so far in ROH, and it took fifteen minutes in the ring with Davey freakin’ Richards to get a match that is just passably for a main event. After the match Davey put Mondo over on the mic.

THE BRISCOE BROTHERS vs. EDDIE EDWARDS & ADAM COLE- 7.25/10
A great match, but quite disappointing, considering the talent involved. I was expecting a lot more out of this one.

ROH WORLD TITLE MATCH: Kevin Steen(c) vs. Jay Lethal- 7.75/10
So the match just kind of abruptly ends after Jay Lethal’s father throws a drink on Steen, causing Steen to spit at Lethal’s mother. Of course the announcers say that it is so horrible that Steen spit on Lethal’s mother, but in no way to they criticize Lethal’s father for throwing his drink at Steen without provocation
I think they were trying for a worked-shoot or something here, and it was a HUGE mistake. The fans were very unhappy with the finish, and I think a large part of that is that the finish was unclear. They officially announced it as a no contest. I think a timely announcement (of Lethal being DQed for attacking the ref) would have made the fans less unhappy.
Trying to do this as a worked shoot was a big mistake. If you just had Lethal go nuts and brawl all over the place with Steen and assault him with weapons the fans would have been a lot more accepting of it. Instead the fans felt like they didn’t get any real conclusion to their advertised and hyped main event, so they crapped all over it. It is no wonder that they took the book away from Cornette after this fiasco.

Overall, not a good show from ROH. New Jersey was a big market for ROH for years and for their first even in Jersey in three years to be this bad was just unacceptable. While this event will be a big deal for Lethal, you really don’t get that feeling from the DVD itself. The backstage footage that they posted of Lethal shoving Cornette gets things across much better. Stay away from this show unless you are a completionist.

STUPID ANNOUNCER QUOTES:
1. Kevin Kelley says that Roderick Strong’s chops are so hard that they almost change people’s DNA. WHAT?!

2. Kevin Kelly “Mondo main evented in the Land of the Giants for a number of years, but of course was unappreciated.”
Assuming that “the Land of the Giants” is a reference to WWE (which makes sense in the context of the conversation Cornette and Kelly were having), this is the sort of statement that I hate. You want to lose credibility with new fans? Spouting BS like this is a great way to do it! While it can technically be said that Mondo did main event in WWE for “a number of years,” in order for that statement to be true, that number would be one fifteenth. That’s right. 1/15. Mondo main evented ONE PPV out of the fifteen WWE had in 2006. To make this even worse, Mondo really hasn’t seemed like he is all that worthy of being in ROH, yet Cornette and Kelly are putting him over as if he is someone like Shelton Benjamin or Matt Hardy who fans were clamoring for years to see get a big push.

3. Cornette- “Spinebuster- with authority!- down on the right shoulder” Doesn’t seem like much of a spinebuster then, does it?
