ROH Trios Tournament 2005 (3/5/2005)- Philadelphia, PA

COLT CABANA & STEVE CORINO SEGMENT, & CORINO PROMO- The stuff with Cabana was weird, Corino’s promo was good.

RING CREW EXPRESS & EL GENERICO PROMO- LOL. The Ring Crew Express treat Generico almost as poorly as 3.0 does.

TRIOS TOURNAMENT 2005 FIRST ROUND MATCH: Generation Next (Austin Aries, Roderick Strong, & Jack Evans) vs. Team ROH Students (Shane Hagadorn, Davey Andrews, & Anthony Franco)-
Can YOU guess how this match goes?

TRIOS TOURNAMENT 2005 FIRST ROUND MATCH: The Second City Saints (CM Punk, Colt Cabana, & Steve Corino) vs. The Embassy (Jimmy Rave, Oman Tortuga, & Weapon of Masked Destruction #3) (w/Prince Nana)- 4/10
I absolutely LOVED Punk just charging up the ramp at Rave after everything Rave did to him at the last show.
Good brawl, with Punk constantly going after Rave. Nana & Rave eventually run off and Punk makes the Weapon tap soon after.

BACKSTAGE PROMOS & SEGMENT WITH DRAGON & JOE’S TEAM – Joe cuts a decent promo, then Dragon cuts a pretty good promo… but it is really hard to concentrate on because his pupils are freakishly huge here. It was like he just got back from the optometrist. Then Sean Price comes in to tell us that a mystery person attacked Jay Lethal (don’t worry, the execution here was a lot less lame than my verbiage makes it seem. I’m just really tired right now).

TRIOS TOURNAMENT 2005 FIRST ROUND MATCH: The Ring Crew Express & El Generico vs. The Rotweilers (w/Julius Smokes)- 3.5/10

TRIOS TOURNAMENT 2005 FIRST ROUND MATCH: Bryan Danielson, Samoa Joe, & Vordell Walker vs. Nigel McGuinness, James Gibson, & Spanky- 8/10
Tons of great psychology in here and some good comedy, too.

SEGMENT WITH TRENT ACID, ROCKIN’ REBEL, & SPANKY- Trent Acid hops the guardrail and poops on the fans for cheering people who aren’t from Philly. He says that he is so good that he can come back to ROH whenever he wants. Rockin’ Rebel (who, at this time, I believe, actually held the promoters licensees for both ROH and 3PW, and possibly CZW as well) comes out from the back and tells Trent that making a fuss isn’t worth it. Spanky gets in the ring and tells Trent that the reason ROH doesn’t want him is because he pulls crap like this, then they brawl until the other five guys from the match and Rockin’ Rebel pull them apart, and Trent flees the arena. Overall, a good segment to start an angle of some sort, although I’m not sure that it ever wound up going anywhere.

TRIOS TOURNAMENT SECOND ROUND MATCH: Generation Next vs. The Second City Saints- 6.25/10
These guys were limited by a broken ring. After the match Corino and Punk got into a huge argument and started cursing at each other. Cabana tries to make peace but Corino won’t go for it.
For those who are unaware, during his first run in ROH, Steve Corino used to have his own personal ring announcer read a very long list of during his entrance that somehow pertained to his match. For example if he were in a title match his announcer would read a long list of all of the titles Corino had won in his career. Sometimes, there would be jokes in them(for example, in a list that was something along the lines of midget wrestlers that Corino had beaten, about halfway through the list was Taz). Tonight, before Corino’s announcer can start, he was cut off by Colt Cabana, who had prepared a list of his own to be read. Because tonight’s show was Trios Tournament 2005, Cabana had provided a list of â€"People Colt Cabana would like to have a three-way with.” This was absolutely hilarious! Just so you can get an idea of what we are dealing with here, I will give you the five names on the list that got the biggest pops:
Ginger & Maryanne
Kelly Kapowski & Lisa Turtle
The Olsen Twins
â€"The Black Chicks from Sister Sister”
The Jumping Bomb Angels

GMC INTERVIEWS JAY LETHAL- great promo by Lethal.

â€"SUGAR” SEAN PRICE INTERVIEWS GIBSON & SPANKY- greats stuff with these two!

TRIOS TOURNAMENT SECOND ROUND MATCH: Bryan Danielson, Samoa Joe, & Vordell Walker vs. The Rotweilers (w/Julius Smokes)- 6/10
Dragon and Homicide continue to brawl even after the end of the match.

SIX MAN MAYHEM MATCH: Kevin Steen vs. Dixie vs. Azrieal vs. B-Boy vs. Izzy (w/Lacey & Cheech) vs. Deranged (also w/Lacey & Cheech)- 5.5/10
Azrieal picking up the pin was a big moment for his and Dixie’s side of Special K.

ROH PURE TITLE MATCH: John Walters(c) vs. Jay Lethal- 4.75/10
This was not worked well at all. A lot of the offense just looked pathetically light.

TRIOS TOURNAMENT FINALS- 7/10
Good enough for a main event, but slightly disappointing

HOMICIDE PROMO- good

Overall, not a particularly good show from ROH. The reward for winning the Trios Tournament was that winners would get to book themselves in any match of their choice. This is the sort of thing that should lead to something significant, but it didn’t, and that contributes to making this show feel small and unimportant in the grand scheme of things for ROH.
