ROH Clash of the Contenders (10/9/2009)- Colinsville, IL
KEVIN STEEN BACKSTAGE PROMO- Awesome. This is really made you feel like it was the beginning of a new chapter for Steen & Generico. That they would take some time off and then rededicate themselves to tag team wrestling. How little we knew.
JIM CORNETTE IN-RING PROMO- standard anti-corporate wrestling promo, but this was one of the first times he cut it, so it was fresh and even more fiery and passionate than Cornette usually is.
RODERICK STRONG vs. KEVIN STEEN- 6/10
MSCHIF vs. NICOLE MATTHEWS- 4.5/10
AUSTIN ARIES LUCKY LOTTERY SEGMENT- GREAT segment. There was a lot of build-up in the videowires about Delirious training for a title shot… so Aries, of course, the name that Aries pulls out of his lucky hat is… Daizee Haze. Delirious and Daizee come out and Aries proceeds to be a jerk until Cornette comes out and gives Delirious the title shot anyway, over Aries’ objections.
CLAUDIO CASTAGNOLI BACKSTAGE PROMO- I’m not sure why Claudio needed to be in a fully set banquet hall with just Ernie Osiris to cut this promo. I am going to give the promo a dud because it was all in what I believe is German, so I couldn’t understand a damn thing.
FOUR CORNER SURVIVAL MATCH: Ace Steel vs. Petey Williams vs. Colt Cabana vs. Claudio Castagnboli (w/Ernesto Osiris)- 4.75/10
Very disappointing.
KING & TITUS PROMO- Rhett was good, Kenny wasn’t.
THE BRISCOE BROTHERS vs. THE HOUSE OF TRUTH (Josh Raymond & Christian Able) (w/Truth Martini)- 6/10
KENNY OMEGA PROMO- Awesome! He likens his upcoming match with â€"the American Wolf†Davey Richards to the story of Little Red Ridinghood… and then starts talking about how he needs to fightDavey because Davey killed his grandmother!
KENNY OMEGA vs. DAVEY RICHARDS (w/Shane Hagadorn)-8.5/10
DAVEY RICHARDS PROMO AFTER THE MATCH- awesome.
THE YOUNG BUCKS vs. KENNY KING & RHETT TITUS- 5.75/10
TYLER BLACK vs. CHRIS HERO (w/Shane Hagadorn)- 7/10
ROH WORLD TITLE MATCH: Austin Aries(c) vs. Delirious (w/Daizee Haze)- 7.25/10
Delirious controls the match until Aries takes the Haze out, pissing Delirious off and allowing Aries to take advantage, then we go to some falsies and finally the finish. This was very good, but I think that the shine lasted WAY too long compared to the heat.
BONUS FEATURES:
PRE-SHOW MATCH: Grizzly Redwood vs. Tony Kozina-3/10
TYLER BLACK POST-MATCH PROMO- decent.
Overall, a very good show from ROH, but also disappointing. All of the matches on this show were great match-ups, but a lot of them didn’t deliver as well as they could have. Davey vs. Omega is worth going out of your way to see, but this show had no real storyline ramifications of any sort (other than concluding the relatively minor angle of Delirious training for a title shot). Pick it up if you can, but if you don’t have the cash it is probably better to just get one of the Davey Richards compilations to see the match.
