ROH New Frontiers (6/4/2005)- Williamsville, NY

JAMES GIBSON & SPANKY BACKSTAGE- good (although Spanky talking about having a title shot “without limitations" all but broke kayfabe)

LACEY, CHEECH & CLOUDY BACKSTAGE- decent character stuff for Lacey and it set up a match for later tonight, but Lacey wearing a tube top underneath her sports jacket makes it extreme hard to take her character seriously. Switching to the blouse later on was a good choice.

EL GENERICO & SAL RINAURO vs. FAST EDDIE & JIMMY RAVE (w/Prince Nana & Jade Chung)- 5/10

LOC vs. CHEECH (w/Lacey & Cloudy)- 3.5/10
A short match that was going just fine until the moronic finish which saw Loc take a low blow, Partly Cloudy with a Chance of Cheech, then a shooting star press… then immediately get a small package right out of the shooting star press! WTF? Aside from how ridiculous the whole thing looked… Loc is in the Carnage Crew. Nobody wants to see them do roll-up! People want to see them hit hard and drop people on their heads.

PUNK & CABANA BACKSTAGE- OUTSTANDING! THIS is what friendship is. Only true friends can have a shouting match like that and then walk out with their arms around each other’s shoulders.

HOMICIDE vs. KEVIN STEEN- 6.75/10

ROH WORLD TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH: BJ Whitmer & Jimmy Jacobs(c) vs. The Ring Crew Express- 5.75/10

ALEX SHELLEY vs. RODERICK STRONG- 7/10

AFTERMATH- After the match Austin Aries and Roderick Strong attack Shelley with a pipe. Because of Shelley’s past as the leader of Generation Next, no one in the locker room comes out to save him. This was the final part of the “Alex Shelley has no friends” story and would lead to him joining the Embassy next month.

THE EMBASSY BACKSTAGE- eh. This was really just Nana abusing Jade Chung a bit. Not 100% necessary, but it got the angle over.

THREE WAY DANCE: Davey Andrews vs. The Masked New York Superstar vs. Shane Hagadorn-1.5/10
The Masked New York Superstar didn’t even last a minute… so what was the point of even having him in here? Even scarier. He was more over than either Andrews or Hagadorn… and that’s not me just being snarky and dissing Andrews and Hagadorn. The Superstar got cheers for his one offensive move and people booed when he was eliminated (Andrews did some cheers later on, though).

THE SECOND CITY SAINTS vs. NIGEL MCGUINNESS & CHAD COLLYER- 7/10
Great story here. You could really just feel the atmosphere change away from being a friendly wrestling match whenever Nigel and Cabana were in the ring together.

ROH PURE TITLE MATCH: Samoa Joe(c) vs. James Gibson- 8/10
Awesome match, awesome story, and an awesome finishing sequence. On commentary Gabe voices the opinion that this is the best Pure Title match so far, and while I think that AJ vs. Punk from At Our Best beats this one out for that honor, you could make a good argument for this one, too.

ROH WORLD TITLE MATCH: Austin Aries(c) vs. Spanky- 8.25/10
Great story with both guys working over each other’s neck. They did that Piledriver while seated on a chair spot that Candido and Funk tried at Wrestlepalooza 97 except these guys actually make it look good.

POST-SHOW PROMOS- Jacobs & Whitmer were eh, Aries was good. The segment with Gibson and Spanky was good, especially Gibson’s promo.

Overall, a great show from ROH, despite some bad matches.
