ROH Epic Encounter III
ROH Epic Encounter III (3/20/2010)- Mississauga, ON
OPENING SEGMENT- The originally scheduled main event for this show was supposed to be Tyler Black & Roderick Strong vs. Kenny King & Austin Aries (in, I believe, a 2 out of 3 falls match), but Roddy (and Mark Briscoe) both couldn’t make it tonight. Tyler comes out to open the show and calls out Aries. Aries talks, distracting Tyler so Kenny King could sneak up behind him and the heels beat Tyler down until Jay Briscoe comes out to make the save. Rhett Titus came out to give the heels the advantage back but Tyson Dux came out (to a big pop) to even things out. Austin Aries started using his boot as a weapon to take out the babyfaces until â€"SkullKrusher†Rasche Brown comes out to make the save, sending the heels into retreat. Aries then makes a challenge for an eight man tag team match later in the night and says that he will get a mystery partner that the babyfaces aren’t going to like. Overall, a good segment.
THE FLATLINERS vs. THE HOUSE OF TRUTH (w/Truth Martini)- 6/10
Good opener helped along by a very hot crowd who were very solidly behind the Flatliners.
KEVIN STEEN vs. PLAYER DOS (w/Player Uno)- 7/10
GREAT showing from Dos here! After the match, Steen comes back out and assaults both men.
ROH TV TITLE MATCH: Eddie Edwards(c) (w/Shane Hagadorn) vs. Petey Williams- 6.75/10
This wasn’t supposed to be a title match but Petey Williams talked him into putting the belt on the line by calling him an asshole. I really liked this match, but I really didn’t like Eddie needing Hagadorn’s help to not lose.
HOUSE OF TRUTH PROMO- they claim that Mark Briscoe isn’t here tonight because he is afraid to face them (rather than that he legitimately got stuck at the border).
AUSTIN ARIES, RHETT TITUS, KENNY KING, & ADAM PEARCE vs. TYLER BLACK, JAY BRISCOE, TYSON DUX, & â€"SKULLKRUSHER†RASCHE BROWN- 6.5/10
I really didn’t like the babyfaces jumping the heels from behind, but otherwise a good match.
STEVE CORINO vs. COLT CABANA- 5.25/10
They just brawl for a bit until Cabana locks in the Billy Goat’s Curse. Before Corino can tap, Steen comes out and attacks Cabana, causing a DQ. Steen and Corino are about to beat Cabana down but Generico comes out with a chair and chases them off.
PICK 6 SERIES MATCH: Chris Hero(3) (w/Shane Hagadorn) vs. El Generico- 7.75/10
POST-MATCH SEGMENT- Steen comes out and cuts an awesome promo explaining his turn on Generico at Final Battle 2009. This ended with Steen encouraging Generico to hit him (Cabana even gives Generico and chair and Steen gets on his knees like Generico was at Final Battle) but Generico not quite being able to do it. Corino then shows up and attacks Generico from behind and the heels run off. An awesome segment that really, really made you want to see Generico hit Steen.
KENNY OMEGA PROMO- standard Kenny Omega fun.
KENNY OMEGA vs. DAVEY RICHARDS- 9/10
FANTASTIC! It is an extremely rare honor for a match in ROH to have the entire show named after it so this match had a lot to live up to and it certainly does.
BONUS MATCH: Bobby Dempsey Gauntlet- Bobby Dempsey runs through a bunch of nobodies (although he has a bit of trouble with the last guy. No sh*ts were given by anyone. ROH had their chance to make something out of Bobby Dempsey back in early 2009 after he turned on Sweet N’ Sour Inc, but Bobby was back down on the pre-show four months later, which pretty much ensured that no one would ever care about him again.
Overall, a great show from ROH!
