NJPW G1 Climax 23: Day 9 (8/11/2013)- Tokyo, Japan
Before the match, Takahashi allowed his normally silent bikini clad valets for the evening to talk. The crowd seemed to enjoy this segment.
BLOCK B: Yuji Nagata vs. Yujiro Takahashi- 5.75/10
Towards the end Nagata started bleeding from the mouth and just spat out a huge cloud of blood. Enough to make Gangrel jealous. It looked awesome.
BLOCK B: Toru Yano vs. Minoru Suzuki- 5/10
Suzuki went after Yano’s leg like a freakin’ pitbull and didn’t let go! And then, at the end of the match, Yano just stopped selling it and they started trying for suplexes and going for small packages instead.
BLOCK B: Shelton Benjamin vs. Shinsuke Nakamura- 6.5/10
BLOCK B: Karl â€"Machine Gun†Anderson vs. Tetsuya Naito- 7.75/10
Both guys work over the neck all match, and a very cool finishing sequence.
BLOCK A: Lance Archer vs. Davey Boy Smith Jr.- 6/10
BLOCK A: Togi Makabe vs. Prince Devitt (w/Bad Luck Fale)- 6.5/10
Makabe is a good babyface and the Bullet Club are great heels.
BLOCK A: Satoshi Kojima vs. Kazuchika Okada- 6.75/10
BLOCK A: Katsuyori Shibata vs. Hiroshi Tananashi- 6.5/10
I loved the first ten minutes or so, but when they started doing the strike exchange they just lost me, and when Shibata changed to working over Tananashi’s neck after the strike exchange, they lost me even more. This felt like it was the beginning, the middle, and the end of three entirely different matches.
KAZUSHI SAKURABA, AKEBONE, & KOTA IBUSHI vs. TAKASHI IIZUKA, TOMOHIRO ISHII, & YOSHI-HASHI-6.25/10
G1 CLIMAX TOURNAMENT FINALS: Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Tetsuya Naito- 9/10
An awesome story and awesome selling. Like in last night’s match against Okada, Tanahashi went after his opponent’s knee in a vicious, almost heelish fashion. Naito, for his part, worked over Tanahashi’s neck, which Tanahashi’s opponents had gone after all tournament, including Okada last night and Shibata at the end the earlier match. Yet another awesome match.
A great show from New Japan. A solid undercard and an awesome main event finals for the G1.
