Going into the PPV, my thoughts
As I mentioned the last time I reviewed a Wrestlemania every PPV (this goes double for a Wrestlemania) has those one or two matches that propel into legend and myth, making it seem WAY greater than it was. So again, here I sit, looking at another Mania card, with at least three matches that have probably propelled the PPV into history (the triple threat, the hardcore battle royale, and the 4 way) and wondering it it'll hold up. Alright, let's go!
No fussing about, we get brought right into the building, and Lillian Garcia sings us the Star Spangled Banner. She looks better today than she does here to me for some reason. NOW we get a video package, and now we get that guy who narrates all the Ken Burns documentaries, then the main WWF narrator guy explaining the main event, then another Ken Burns guy piece, and then the WM2000 intro screen.
Godfather and D'Low Brown w/Hoes and Ice T vs Bull and Bossman
-Might have to give this match a 7 because of Godfather and D'Lo's matching gear
-I miss it when the crowd would do sing-along type stuff
-Jesus Bull Buchanan is terrifying
-Unnecessary cheap shot by Godfather
-Bossman and Buchanan work well as a team, in particular, why Buchanan wasn't pushed as a monster heel confounds me
-Good lord D-Lo moves like a lightweight
-Nice *shaking the rope to prevent the top rope spot* spot.
-"When Pete Rose sees Kane I think he sees Bud Sellig or something"-Jerry Lawler
-Buchanan wins with a frog splash and scares away the hoes
6/10 with a Buchanan win
Triple H and Stephanie are relaxed about tonight in a backstage segment. Didn't the McMahon Helmsley
Backstage segment explaining the rules of the Hardcore Battle Royal
Hardcore Battle Royal for the Hardcore Title
Crash Holly vs Tazz vs Viscera vs Pete Gas vs Rodney vs Joey Abs[ vs Hardcore Holly vs Taka Michinoku vs Funaki vs Mosh vs Thrasher vs Bradshaw vs Farooq /center]
- Crash with the "Houdini of Hardcore" was great.
-Viscera being creamed by everyone and still going was great.
-I think Thrasher just stiffed the piss out of Rodney with a bedpan
-The Acolytes throwing Funaki on top of Viscera was great.
-Tazz covers Pete Gas, Holly breaks the cover, remembers the rules and walks away haha.
-Man, if Hardcore hadn't won this would've been much better.
4.5/10
Al Snow segment, Blackman thinks Al Snow is doing something dumb, and Al Snow is hiding something.
Al Snow introduces Chester McCheeserton, I think this whole gimmick was supposed to make fun of WCW breaking kayfabe
[center]T&A w/Trish Stratus vs Head Cheese w/ Chester McCheeserton
A good match, definitely one that I would look out on your own, all you need to know is that T&A win and Al Snow and Steve Blackman kick around a midget as a result.
6.75/10
Mae Young and the Kat get ready for a match, which leads to some goofy censorship of a naked Kat
We get a Dudleyz promo in classic ECW style about the three team ladder match
3-team ladder match for the Tag Team Titles
Dudleyz vs E&C vs Hardyz
-Huh, didn't know that Edge did the ladder spear here
-Jeff Hardy hitting the sickest powerbomb on the earth
-The Splash Leg Drop thing is super cool
- The ladder spills are awesome too
-THAT LADDER DIVE THROUGH THE TABLE JESUS
- Dat Ladder Swanton jesus
-That last table bump. Matt had to break his collarbone there.
7.75/10
Mick Foley cuts a promo on how he wants people talking about his last impression for the next 10 years.
Terri w/ The Fabulous Moolah vs The Kat w/Mae Young (Val Venis is the Special Ref)
-Jim Ross takes a dig at PW Insider saying that they shouldn't judge this match on the star system
-Val Venis get distracted a bunch and clothes gets ripped off.
2.5/10
The Radicalz (Saturn, Malenko, Guerrero) vs Chyna and Too Cool (Sexy and S2H)
-Eddie's smitten with Chyna, oh boy.
-Speaking of, nice Eddie vs. Chyna tease
-Chyna does the Sexay should jive at one point
-Lawler being hip and Ross being out of touch is great
-Double WORM
-Double Handspring Elbow
-Double Low Blow
-Chyna does it!
6.5/10
2 fall European/Intercontinental Triple Threat
Angle vs Benoit vs Jericho
- Very fast and furious, not a lot of one on one breaks in the action
-Benoit going for the cover right after he won the intercontinental belt was a nice touch
-Okay, now there's lots of 1v1, making the two segments feel fundamentally different.
7.5/10
Rikishi and Kane with Paul Bearer vs DX (Road Dogg and X-Pac) w/Tori
-
We get a bleh match, with story eating a stinkface
-Too Cool and the San Diego Chicken show up (who apparently is Pete Rose) and Kane kindly waits for the dance routine to end before he chokes the guy. Pete Rose come sin from behind, but eats a chokeslam and a stink face for his trouble.
- "Rikishi pulling a Bud Selig and sticking his ass in Pete Roses face" -Jim Ross
Apparently this has happened three Wrestlemania in a row, Jesus
4.5/10
Rock promo, saying that it's about him tonight and that he will win the WWF Championship tonight
-Apparently 2000 to 2001 has been a giant quest by the Rock to get the championship
Mick Foley (w/Linda) vs The Big Show (w/Shane) vs The Rock (w/Vince) vs Triple H (w/Stephanie)
Big Show throwing everyone around and then getting triple teamed was fantastic.
-Again, same with the chair shot only making Show vulnerable was great.
-Triple H getting triple teamed is always good, especially if it results in a Rock n' Sock reunion.
-We even get a barbed wire bat spot!
-I wish Mick Foley hadn't prevented a People's Elbow on HHH, that was kind of a buzzkill
-Why do all announce table botches seem to happen at Mania
- Mick Foley not winning=disappointment
-The Rock is so awesome he sells fucking kick outs
-We get some babyface in peril, then Shane comes out and dukes it out with Vince, and blah blah blah. Vince clears Shane out and betrays The Rock for HHH. The Rock gets escorted out after the pinfall, but ends up attack all the McMahons. He People Elbows Steph and this thing ends.
7/10, was a 7.5 for, overall one of the best multi-man non-tag matches I've ever seen. and a great post match.
Final thoughts
I think all Manias should follow this formula, a diverse card, featuring everyone from jobber to main eventers in fun matches. Even the stuff that was "bad" was at the least fun, a formula that should be studied for future Manias.
