ROH Boiling Point (11/7/2009)- Edison, NJ

COLT CABANA & GRIZZLY REDWOOD BACKSTAGE- Cabana cut a boring and unfunny promo hyping up their match against Aries & Titus tonight. Grizzly then cut a good old-fashioned babyface promo that got me much more hyped up than anything Cabana said.

PICK 6 CHALLENGE MATCH: Kenny Omega(3) vs. Sonjay Dutt- 5.75/10
A fun opener, but it would have been nice to see Sonjay’s work on Omega’s knee actually play into things.

EMBASSY PROMO- okay, until they started that evil laugh at the end. It would have worked with just Joey, Nana, & Ernesto, but Erick Stevens doing it just killed the whole thing. Stevens looked dangerous standing silently in the background, but once he started laughing it just killed the whole thing for me.

MARK BRISCOE & NECRO BUTCHER vs. THE EMBASSY (Joey Ryan & Erick Stevens) (w/Prince Nana & Ernesto Osiris)- 5/10
Mark Briscoe being the first guy to use a weapon made me very unhappy. They managed to keep all of the weapon shots and interference behind the referee’s back (until the run-in and DQ finish), but I still just wasn’t in to it. The stuff that Stevens and Necro did was good, but I really didn’t care much for this match. The finish saw Claudio run in and attack the babyfaces, causing a DQ. Jay Briscoe came out to even things up, and as Mark, Necro, Stevens, and Ryan brawled to the back, Jay and Claudio remained brawling in the ring, so we got a…

PICK 6 CHALLENGE MATCH: Jay Briscoe(6) vs. Claudio Castagnoli (w/Prince Nana & Ernesto Osiris)- 4.25/10
Short.

KENNY KING PROMO- AWESOME! Kenny is such a smug douchebag that you cannot help but want to see him get kicked right in the face.

PICK SIX CHALLENGE MATCH: Tyler Black(2) vs. Kenny King (w/Austin Aries & Rhett Titus)- no rating, okay segment.
Before the match Aries cut a promo on Tyler, and from the moment Aries said that he wasn’t sure that Tyler would make it out of the building without an injury, you knew exactly what would happen: Aries and Rhett run in for a DQ. Fortunately they didn’t waste any time before doing the DQ, s they kept the Black vs. King match-up fresh.
Rhett and Kenny went for a Spike Piledriver on Tyler (the same way they put Jerry Lynn on the shelf), but Colt Cabana and Grizzly Redwood came out to make the save. Jim Cornette then came out and told them that they had a choice: they could either be fired, or they could wrestle in a six man tag team match. Cornette was great here with his babyface fire and talking about how Aries and his proteges have screwed the fans and that’s not cool and everything like that.
Anyway, the heels chose to keep their jobs, so we got…

AUSTIN ARIES, KENNY KING, & RHETT TITUS vs. TYLER BLACK, COLT CABANA, & GRIZZLY REDWOOD- 6.75/10
On commentary Hero and Prazak had an exchange that I am almost certain that Jim Cornette instructed them to have which explained why Cornette, who is officially the â€"Executive Producer” of the ROH on HDnet TV show, had the power to book matches and fire people her on a non-HDnet show.
The match was pretty good. Cabana making Aries tap set up for their world title match next month in Chicago, which Colt asked for his a post-match promo. He also assured Tyler Black that if he won the title, he would make sure that Tyler got the first title shot.

BOBBY DEMPSEY vs. TONY KOZINA- 3.75/10
Kozina looked good. Dempsey looked just like he usually does: fat.

DAIZEE HELPS DELIRIOUS TRAIN FOR HIS MATCH- in order to toughen him up for Roddy’s chops, she had the ROH students chop him. I don’t know if this was supposed to make us think Roddy’s chops wouldn’t be as effective or if it was supposed to be funny or what, but it was really just dull. Thankfully, it was short.

PICK 6 CHALLENGE MATCH: Roderick Strong(1) vs. Delirious(5) (w/Daizee Haze)- 7.75/10
One of those matches where you go in thinking that one guy doesn’t stand a chance, but by the end you are almost certain he will win.

KEVIN STEEN & EL GENERICO vs. DAVEY RICHARDS & CHRIS HERO (w/Shane Hagadorn, Eddie Edwards, & Sara Del Rey)- 8/10
Strangely, Sara came out with Hero while Hagadorn and Eddie came out with Davey, despite the fact that they are all part of the same stable.
The shine saw Steen and Generico work over Davey’s ear. Yes. His ear. Steen wound up as the babyface in peril, but managed to make the hot tag to Generico, only for Generico to quickly get cut off and take his turn as the babyface in peril. The babyfaces eventually made their comeback and stuff got awesome, including a BRAINBUSTAH! A good enough main event to make the show feel worthwhile, but nothing particularly special, as far as ROH main events go.

KEVIN STEEN PROMO- great. He built up their matches for next Saturday night’s show in Toronto (Steen vs. Hero, Generico vs. Nakaima), the Omega Effect.

A decent show from ROH, but that is really because the two top matches saved it from being very bad. Another gripe I have was that the jewel case didn’t make any reference to the Pick 6 Challenge matches, and the announcers (Dave Prazak and Chris Hero during all relevant times) never once explained how this new concept worked.
At 2:11:20, this has got to be one of the shortest shows in ROH history (especially for a show that wasn’t part of a double DVD release), so to make up for it, there were a lot of…

BONUS MATCHES:
PRE-SHOW MATCH: Tommaso Ciampa, Tony Nese, & Gino Giovani vs. The Bravado Brothers & Kyle O’Reilly- 3.5/10
The match itself was just standard pre-show stuff. The lack of good audio also really detracted from the viewing experience a bit. The Bravados didn’t seem to have much confidence in themselves, but you could definitely tell that Kyle had something special about him, even at this point. Ciampa looked completely unrecognizable. I actually had to go back and watch it a second time to even figure out which guy he was… and that was with him having a variation of a Mohawk and doing a running knee in the corner.

KENNY KING & RHETT TITUS vs. NECRO BUTCHER & DELIRIOUS (from ROH The Hunt Begins)- 4/10
The match was slow and dull for the most part. Then Necro got DQed when he hit Rhett in the head with a chair for no reason. Then he made a cover while Delirious counted the pin, presumably just to be douches.

BRENT ALBRIGHT vs. JIMMY RAVE (w/The Embassy) (from ROH Tag Title Classic)- 4/10

NECRO BUTCHER vs. CHRIS HERO (w/Shane Hagadorn (from ROH Tag Title Classic)- 5/10
The fans were into Necro’s stuff, but then the moron went and got himself DQed for no reason for the second straight night. What an idiot.
