ROH Field of Honor (8/15/2014)- Brooklyn, NY
STEEL CAGE MATCH FOR THE ROH TV TITLE: Jay Lethal(c) (w/Truth Martini & Selezyia) vs. Matt Taven- 7.5/10
- If Taven wins, he also gets five minutes alone in the cage with Truth Martini
- If Lethal wins, Taven can never challenge for the TV Title again as long as Lethal is champion.
If you don’t like overbooking, you probably won’t like this as much as I did, and I definitely understand not liking overbooking in a cage match, but I thought it was done very well and contributed to the story of the match. You really felt sorry for Taven after being screwed out of the title yet again.
The idiot cameraman spent a good twenty or thirty seconds focusing on Truth Martini running the bases instead of focusing on the action going on in the ring in this big blow-off steel cage title match!
TAVEN IN THE LOCKER ROOM- good.
CLIPS OF THE ROSTER PLAYING SOME BASEBALL-
They showed us Michael Elgin hitting a home run. Well… that’s pretty ironic.
Also, I’m not going to lie… I really didn’t like the Decade hanging out and playing baseball with guys who they should theoretically be feuding against. They had some more clips throughout the show of various guys hitting the ball very far and getting extra-base hits… aside from the Romantic Touch, who popped up.
MARK BRISCOE vs. TAKAAKI WATANABE- 5/10
BRUTAL BURGERS vs. R.D. EVANS & MOOSE (w/Veda Scott & â€"Ramonâ€)- 4.75/10
Cheeseburger brought a sign declaring that he and Brutal Bob would break The New Streak. It didn’t happen.
ROCKY ROMERO vs. MICHAEL BENNETT (w/Maria Kanellis)- 6/10
THE DECADE vs. KEN PHOENIX, WILL FERRARA, & JOHN KNOCKOUT- 2.25/10
Based on his facepaint, I’ll assume that John Knockout is the half-brother of Abe â€"Knuckleball†Schwartz (the show is in Brooklyn, after all). The young guys got some offense in, then got beaten. The Decade beat the kids down afterwards, but Hanson ran out with a baseball bat to make the save.
Holy sh*t. Steve Corino actually admitted to not only being involved in SCUM, but to being its leader.
TOMMASO CIAMPA vs. SILAS YOUNG- 6.75/10
Seeing as how both guys were getting title shots next weekend at Death Before Dishonor XII weekend, I probably wouldn’t have booked this match, but the finish and the post-match segment worked very well with the direction Ciampa was about to go.
CEDRIC ALEXANDER vs. ACH- 4.5/10
An extremely short match, but the finish came after an utterly sick-looking bump, so I’m mostly okay with it (still disappointed, though). I’m actually wondering whether or not they rushed the finish because of that bump.
ROH WORLD TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH: reDRagon(c) vs. The Addiction (Christopher Daniels & Frankie Kazarian)- 6.25/10
The match seemed to be heading somewhere very good, but the Decade came out and cost the Addiction the match. They did a good job of making it feel like the match ended quite a while before it â€"should†have, so they have at least kept the reDRagon vs. Addiction match-up fresh to revisit either later in the year or at some point next year.
ROH WORLD TITLE MATCH: Michael Elgin(c) vs. Jay Briscoe vs. Adam Cole vs. AJ Styles- 8/10
An awesome main event that really helps save this show from being a disappointment.
This was a big test for ROH, and, unfortunately, they really didn’t pass. This was by far the biggest venue they’ve ever run, and while I don’t think anyone expected them to sell out a stadium, I think they were expecting a lot more people than they got (less than they usually get for their New York shows at the smaller Hammerstein Ballroom). The crowd was pretty decent for most of the show, aside from during the Cedric vs. ACH match and the tag title match, when there was a big argument between two sections who were just trying to call attention to themselves. Some people had reported that this was the worst-behaved crowd in ROH history, but if that was so, the DVD didn’t pick up on it aside from the aforementioned argument. In the ring this show definitely could have been better, but it certainly wasn’t bad by any means, and the main event in particular is definitely worth seeking out.
The DVD itself and the menu options and graphics are definitely the best in ROH history, and there are a lot of bonus promos, but that is more the cherry on top than a reason to buy the DvD in and of itself.
STUPID ANNOUNCER QUOTES:
1. Steve Corino warned Lethal to be careful or else he would get DQed… in a cage match.
