ROH Death Before Dishonor XII: Night 1 (8/22/2014)- Milwaukee, WI
KAZARIAN & DANIELS PROMO- a great promo to introduce the â€"Addiction†name, but I still hate the name itself. The â€"that’s where the pure stuff is†line was great, though.
In Silas Young’s own hometown, there is a fan with a sign that says â€"if Silas wins, we riot.â€
THE ADDICTION (Christopher Daniels & Frankie Kazarian) vs. THE KINGDOM (w/Maria Kanellis)- 6.75/10
A really fun old-school tag team match.
In this match, the fans showed why taking the â€"Addiction†name was a mistake: â€"KAZ AND DANIELS!†clap* *clap* *clap*clap*clap* flows much better as a chant.
TADARIUS THOMAS (w/The Decade & Adam Page) vs. ADAM PEARCE- 5.5/10
Jimmy Jacobs explained that their young boys weren’t learning quickly enough, so they are bringing in cranky veteran Adam Pearce to beat some respect into them, starting with Tadarius tonight. The match was very good for what it was, as was the post-match segment.
TOMMASO CIAMPA vs. JIMMY JACOBS (w/The Decade & Adam Page)- 6.75/10
Jacobs cut a good promo before the match, which set the stage perfectly for the great brawl they had. Ciampa did a good job displaying both his craziness and his desire for the ROH World Title during the finish.
AJ STYLES vs. KYLE O’REILLY (w/Bobby Fish)- 8.75/10
Even better than on TV! Just as awesome as we all knew it would be. They told a great story with Kyle working over AJ’s arm and AJ trying to hit the Styles Clash. Fantastic selling by AJ, too, and HOLY SH*T what a finish!
ADAM COLE PROMO- good heel stuff. He ended it by Superkicking a referee because he is angry.
SIX MAN MAYHEM MATCH: Cedric Alexander vs. ACH vs. Bobby Fish vs. Adam Page vs. BJ Whitmer vs. Jay Lethal (w/the House of Truth)- 6.25/10
A fun spotfest with an important finish.
RODERICK STRONG vs. HANSON- 6.75/10
The stuff with Adam Page on the outside was great, and led to some good stuff with The Decade after the match.
BRISCOES PROMO- AWESOME!
THE YOUNG BUCKS vs. THE BRISCOES- 8/10
Exactly what you’d expect from these two teams. All action, but all awesome, and some great nearfalls.
MICHAEL ELGIN PROMO- eh
SILAS YOUNG PROMO- decent
ROH WORLD TITLE MATCH: Michael Elgin(c) vs. Silas Young-7.75/10
Silas Young cut a pre-match promo to try to get his hometown fans to boo him. It didn't work.
Silas hit Elgin with a table but didn't get DQed, but other than that, this was a great match (a bit better than the commercial-cropped version they showed on TV, but not that much). Unfortunately for Silas, though, it was only a great match in a spot where something more really could have elevated him to being something more than a midcard dork. He didn't deliver an awesome match here. He didn't deliver an awesome match in either of his matches with Steen. He hasn't delivered an awesome match yet in ROH, and that's not good, because awesome matches are what ROH was built on, and what it markets itself.
An awesome show from ROH! Great action, all up and down the card, and some important finishes, too. The crowd was small, but pretty close to capacity for a small venue like Turner Hall. More importantly for us consumers, though, they were red-hot all night long. Definitely a show you should pick up.
