SHO TANAKA vs. YOHEI KOMATSU- 3.5/10
The Cena vs. Orton of pre-show matches.
MASCARA DORADA & TIGER MASK IV vs. CAPTAIN NEW JAPAN & MANABU NAKANISHI- 3.75/10
I was surprised they didn’t put Mascara Dorada over stronger in his first big match as an official part of the roster. He couldn’t just hit his finisher to pin Captain New Japan?
HIROYOSHI TENZAN & JUSHIN â€"THUNDER†LIGER vs. ROB CONWAY & CHASE OWENS (w/Bruce Tharpe)- 4.25/10
WHOA! What the f*ck happened to Rob Conway in the past ten months? He looks like a completely different person. A much more stereotypically Texan person.
The graphic on the screen misspelled Liger’s name by sticking a Y in after the U.
KOTA IBUSHI vs. TOMOAKI HONMA- 7.5/10
A lot better than I was expecting. It’s nice to see a Honma match in which he doesn’t miss forty-three headbutts every once in a while.
IWGP JR. HEAVYWEIGHT TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH: reDRagon(c) vs. Time Splitters vs. Young Bucks- 8.5/10
It is absolutely amazing that these guys can all still manage to come up with something I haven’t seen before.
IWGP JR. HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE MATCH: Kenny Omega(c) (w/the Young Bucks & Cody Hall) vs. Ryusuke Taguchi- 7.5
I’ve seen heels do some horrible and mean things on wrestling shows, but Kenny Omega might have topped them all tonight when he attempted to sodomize Ryusuke Taguchi with a flagpole. Taguchi got his revenge for this, which was good, but he did it right in front of the ref and there was no DQ, which was bad.
The match was great, and they did a big angle afterwards where the Bullet Club gave Taguchi a double spike tombstone piledriver onto a chair and Taguchi did a stretcher-job for it.
KAZUSHI SAKURABA, TORU YANO, & KAZUCHIKA OAKDA (w/Gedo) vs. THE BULLET CLUB (Bad Luck Fale, Yujiro Takahashi, & Tama Tonga) (w/Cody Hall)- 6.25/10
Fale channeled his inner Daniel Bryan by grabbing an announcer’s tie and choking Okada with it.
Okada worked almost all of the match for his team. Yujiro reminded us how awesome a heel he is. Okada hitting the body slam on Fale got a huge reaction.
SATOSHI KOJIMA, TETSUYA NAITO, & YUJI NAGATA vs. CHAOS (Shinsuke Nakamura, Tomohiro Ishii, & YOSHI-HASHI)- 6.75/10
Good stuff and it definitely got me excited for Nagata vs. Nakamura.
IWGP TAG TEAM TITLE MATCH: Hirooki Goto & Katsuyori Shibata(c) vs. The Bullet Club (Karl â€"Machine Gun†Anderson & Doc Gallows) (w/Cody Hall)- 8/10
The heat dragged on for too long, but once they got to the finishing sequence, this got AWESOME!
IWGP HEAVYWEIGHT TITLE MATCH: Hiroshi Tanahashi(c) (w/Captain New Japan) vs. AJ Styles (w/the Bullet Club)- 9/10
FANTASTIC match! HIGH FLY FLOW ONTO THE ENTIRE BULLET CLUB! And Tanahashi comes up bleeding (apparently he clonked heads with one of the Jackson brothers). I cannot remember the last time I saw blood in New Japan.
AJ works over Tanahashi’s back, but then switches to his neck, culminating in a great battle over the Styles Clash to set-up the finish.
I would also be remiss if I did not take a moment to praise the bravery of Captain New Japan, who saw all eighty-three Bullet Club guys putting the boots to Tanahashi and ran over to help his pal, despite the overwhelming odds.
A pretty awesome show from New Japan, although a lot of the undercard is totally skippable.
