For what is traditionally the second or third highest rated Raw of the year, Monday's post-Royal Rumble episode averaged 2.703 million viewers, up nine percent from last week. That's actually down from two weeks ago, however, as the January 14 Raw averaged 2.722 million viewers.

This week's Raw was down exactly 20 percent from last year's post-Rumble episode, consistent with the numbers of late.

Raw did not have the show-long ratings erosion that recent weeks have had -- as the third hour held up better with Seth Rollins deciding which title he was going to challenge for at WrestleMania and a Ronda Rousey title defense promoted over the first two hours.

Raw finished fifth for the night in total viewers on cable but did top the 18-49 demo with an average rating of 0.95.

Here are the hourly numbers:

Hour one: 2.816 million viewers (1.00 rating in 18-49 demo)
Hour two: 2.718 million (0.95 rating)
Hour three: 2.575 million (0.90 rating)

It’s that rare time of year to grab off-season fans and grip them. Which naturally WWE will fail to do.

Especially if they carry on they way they’re going. RAW and Smackdown this week were downright painful in my opinion- I skipped more than I watched.

This. Raw especially felt like it was back to being just as bad as it was in the fall. I'm kind of hoping that this ratings downswing combined with the need to get ratings up for Fox turns into a kind of watershed moment where Vince starts letting Hunter run more and more things. Even if Vince is still picking who is on top but just letting Hunter do the week-to-week booking, I think things would vastly improve.

Hunter is more in touch with the fan base and I know Vince will find it hard to loosen his grip.
Vince knew best 15-20 years ago.
Then nobody in WWE knew best.
Now Hunter knows best.

There were people who knew best between now and then. Chris Kreski. Paul Heyman. Seth Mates. Jim Cornette. Lance Storm if he had been given the book. Dusty Rhodes based off of his FCW/NXT stuff. Kevin Eck has been pretty impressive with the ideas he has put out. Court Bauer and Dave Lagana both clearly have some aptitude for things. The problem was that often the people on top (Vince and Steph, and on certain things also Hunter and Michael Hayes) didn't want to listen to them.

No! No no no!

Vince never knew best. Vince knows how to follow the money, he's always been that way, and he's still very good at it.

Vince KNOWS if he caters to families and keeps his brand mainstream friendly he'll do better than he'll do catering to the fans.

His roided up freaks in the 80's made him a hell of a lot more money than Shawn or Brett. Every time he listens to the fans he loses money. CM Punk sold merch but was a terrible draw. He lost so much money going all in on Daniel Bryan, which is astounding because the fans weren't having it any other way. That's why we had to stomach Super Cena for so long... long after we were sick of him, he was still bringing in the most money.

Now the money is on Fox and in Saudi Arabia, even further away from the fans, so the product itself is going to shit.
