A March wrestling event designed to raise money for a charity was canceled Tuesday after it became public that indie wrestler and former Bar Wrestling owner Joey Ryan was involved.

The Wrestling 4 Women’s Charity show in Knoxville, TN, was scheduled for March 20th featuring AEW wrestlers Brian Cage and Sonny Kiss, Impact Wrestling's Trey Miguel, 2 Cold Scorpio, Davey Boy Smith Jr., and JTG among others. A poster circulated on the event's Twitter account Tuesday where Ryan could be seen on the poster.

Based on the page to buy tickets, it would appear Bar Wrestling was actually promoting the show, using a new email address for the charity.

That led AEW owner Tony Khan to say on Twitter that he would remove talent from the event if Ryan were involved, but would still donate to the charity. That offer also came into question with Khan asking if the charity was even real.

Soon thereafter, the group announced on their now deleted Twitter account that they were canceling the whole show while implying they did nothing wrong:

“We apologize for riling everyone up. It is clear that we’re in over our heads. We’ll say that everybody booked was fully aware of all details including going through AEW’s 3rd party booking system for talent. Rather than put talent in a tough situation, we’ve canceled the show.”

At one point, the event had been announced as airing on FITE TV. However, the organization said on Twitter that they were not carrying the event.

Coming out of last summer's #SpeakingOut movement, Ryan was accused by multiple women of sexual assault. He is attempting to fight some of those charges in court as he has several lawsuits going. Ryan was released from Impact Wrestling (who he is suing) following the allegations and was edited off all previous episodes of Being The Elite that he was involved in.

Props to Tony Khan for doing it right and offering to donate the money anyway.

I think he withdrew the charity offer once he found out Bar Wrestling were actually the name behind booking the event and questioned if the charity was even real. This was brought up to him by Big Swole on Twitter.

People's objection to the charity seems to stem from its religious nature more than anything else.

the nerve on this fucker to try and hide his return behind a women's charity event. From what I heard, there was a proxy 'booker' calling people saying "joey and sonny will be there" or something of the like, thinking it was Janela for sure, and that's how they got a bunch of people that would had never agreed to be in a show with Ryan.

Piece of shit is probably now going to claim that his 'retractors cost a charity a bunch of money' to make himself look good

This is where my problem is with him. Because once it was discovered that Bar Wrestling was behind it due to some link on the site, those details were immediately removed and just left the charitable stuff and contact details.
It's sneaky and it's wrong. I hope Stephen P New whoops him in court and it all starts to unravel quickly as he hides behind these $14m lawsuits.

I mean... looking at it from a purely PR point of view, doing an event for a women's charity is the logical route to take (and yes, the thing you say in your last sentence is certainly a factor in that).

He'll probably sue everyone for $14 million dollars.

it's a good step to take, but is should most definitely be preceded by an apology which he never gave, to the victims, and then to the victims that he sued, and then to every wrestler out there, and then to the fans, and then again to the victims. Charity show should be like year two route.

But he’s found God. So everything is automatically forgiven.
That’s how it works right? Because that’s how Joey Ryan has acted like it works.

Oh and I’ve just read that the show has been fully cancelled now anyway. So. That’s the end of that.
