'THE FIEND' BRAY WYATT RELEASED BY WWE

A year full of surprising WWE cuts continued Saturday as former WWE Champion "The Fiend" Bray Wyatt was released.

WWE initially announced the release on Twitter, but then deleted the tweet. A short time later, they tweeted the news again.

Dave Meltzer reported that Wyatt was told by John Laurinaitis that his release was due to budget cuts. He was preparing to return in August and was booked on some shows.

Wyatt made his final appearance as part of a Firefly Fun House segment on the post-WrestleMania Raw in April. At WrestleMania, Randy Orton defeated him in his first match back after Orton lit him on fire at last December's TLC. Wyatt (Windham Rotunda) was distracted by Alexa Bliss who, after being aligned with Wyatt in a storyline, said she no longer needed him.

The 34-year-old had been in the WWE system since 2009. The son of Mike Rotunda, he first came to prominence as Husky Harris in NXT and was part of The Nexus angle in WWE. He was sent back to then-FCW and eventually rebranded himself as Wyatt, a charismatic cult-like leader of the Wyatt Family. He, Erick Rowan and Luke Harper were eventually called up to the main roster in 2013. In 2019, Wyatt debuted The Fiend character.

In his run, Wyatt held the WWE title once, the Universal title twice, and both the Raw and SmackDown Tag Team titles once.

He is married to WWE ring announcer JoJo Offerman and the couple have two children together. His brother, Bo Dallas, was also released earlier this year.

Good. They deserve to suffer. WWE running with Bray Wyatt/The Fiend so hard is their fault.

I've been thinking about this, and I think he might be the guy AEW could sign who could bring the greatest reward, but also the highest risk (excluding "high risk" people like Joey Ryan, of course. I'm talking a purely Creative/fan backlash risk).

my understanding is that all of his gimmicks were his idea until WWE got their hands on the soup for the weekly booking. I think the dude has good ideas and may be able to go far with some freedom, but what we don't know is how far out are his ideas in terms of supernatural stuff nor what he expects to see.

It's not just the "can he execute if unfettered by Vince" thing, though:
- Is he someone who would be seen as "too much of a WWE guy" in a prominent place that might result in rejection that way we've seen with Christian?
- How will AEW fans react to his sort of stuff?
- But would he be able to bring a bunch of new fans- the Wyatt "lore" fans (read as: apologists) that no other wrestler would be able to bring?

I think his reception could depend on how he establishes himself, he is a the end of the day a Rotunda with a well known father, and I had originally thought that I really wouldn't mind seeing him and Bo come in to any promotion like a tag of brothers, no magic, no shenanigans. As what AEW is right now, the magic has been somewhat toned down and Black already feels like he fills in the 'dark' quota, so I think there is space for someone like Wyatt, BUT not now, let Black establish himself before bringing in more stuff like that.
