You tell me....

Post by Iceman » Mar 18th, '11, 21:32

I love this wrestling site. Great setup...kudos Cero. Alot of info. Passionate posters who are knowledgable but simply see things differently. Alot of plusses here.

Many of you know that I've been a wrestling fan for years. More years than many of you here have been on this earth. You probably haven't noticed but I've also been absent here as a poster. I like to read but my posting on this site hasn't been active. The reason...well the reason is the point of this post.

Tell me why I should be excited to be a wrestling fan today? What is there to get me excited? Quite frankly, i watch all the shows and there is little to anything to get me hyped up.

I'm old school. i like wrestling. I don't want a talk-a-thon, testerone-based soap opera. I don't want my Smackdown to be a 2-hour review of what I watched on RAW. I don't want a drunkin' debacle on TNA. I don't even want a all hype and little substance RAW. What happened to my Wolves in ROH...Aries?...Steen?

Why should I even be exited about Wrestlemania when I see a series of matches that don't even supply a trickle of adrenaline. I'm suppose to be excited to see Michael Cole get his tail kicked by an old dude? As much as I want to see it...does it warrant the hefty price tag I will be shelling out to my PPV provider?

What I am essentially questioning is the state of wrestling today. Today female wrestlers are knockouts and divas. Today RAW will open with 1/2 hour of jabber. Today TNA neither recognizes nor maximizes the ability of their athletes. Instead I have 60 year old men shoved down my throat. Today the WWE refuses to build legit tag teams. Today ROH is in tansition and I see them hyping sweater wearing, Gramma lovin _____ (fill in the blank) and I'm suppose to be excited over that?

Legit talent is often put on the back burner in favor of talentless talkers. Sometimes even released or sent back to Florida to retool. Storylines go dead. Bad stories resurface. Heal/Faces to Faces/Heals flip flop constantly. Pure wrestlers with talent are lucky to get a 5 minute match. Natural rivalries are usually only carried to the next PPV.

So tell me guys and gals...why should I be excited with the state of wrestling today.

I don't really know what to tell you. It's a whole new era for a new generation of wrestling fans. There are still some indies out there that will give you what you want (NWA Force 1 is upcoming and awesome), but it's a new day and for the most part, that era has died.

Someone didn't jump on the Bravado Bandwagon...

Neither did I. I thought it was dumb.

As for why you should be excited: Steen may be gone (for dumb reasons), and Aries, too... but there is Davey, Eddie, Roddy, Daniels, Claudio, Hero, The Briscoes, WGTT...

There is so much going on, with GREAT talents. I haven't seen it yet, but all reports and reviews are saying that KoW and the American Wolves put on an outstanding tag team title match back in December at Tag Title Classic II (one of the 9 matches in ROH history good enough that they named the show after it ), and the most recent Charlotte show Only the Strong Survive was reported to be top quality, with great matches from Davey vs. Hero, Jay vs. Roddy, and Daniels vs. Claudio. Final Battle was awesome. ROH is delivering in the ring just as much as it always has.

Also... storylines! The current angle of Steve Corino's is great. CHIKARA is towards the end of one of the most brilliantly booked angles in wrestling history... one of those feuds that actually makes you hate the heels... that makes you legitimately hot when the heels cheat to win.

CZW is apparently doing very well, too. I don't follow them, so I can't vouch for it, but that is what I have heard, so if you are into that, they are apparently good, too.

Today's good wrestling is a bit harder and more expensive to find than just turning on your TV, but it is damn well worth it.

I agree with you Iceman (with the exception of not posting :p ). Wrestling right now is in a slow state IMO.

You have your US titan WWE about to deliver a lackluster PPV card for WM. I really appreciate the fact that they're pushing young talent for the main events (del Rio and Miz). But at the same time, i'm pulling my hair out by how they're building EVERY feud, I'm not interested in ANY feud AT ALL!! and this is WM!!!

Then you have TNA....and i don't think i need to even talk about it for everyone to know what I mean.

ROH, i can't really argue against it, it keeps delivering amazing wrestling, dream matches, and well booked wrestling, but i kinda feel like you mentioned, is in a transition. They're coming out of an amazing 2010 with Davey's hunt for the title, Generico vs Steen, and KoW vs The World. So i feel like the build up is on the way for another good year, yet I still don't feel intrigued by any of the stories going on there. Maybe just Corino's, but it's barely warming up.

The rest of the indys i can't really vouch for them right now...International, I can say that NJPW had been doing amazing with Wrestle Kingdom, all CMLL/NJPW shows were great, and they're underway with the NJPW Junior Cup, unfortunately the Japan quake kinda made the stall. AAA and CMLL have been doing OK, both of them just had two great shows this week (AAA's First Ever PPV), and if they do decide to join together to take out WWE in Mexico, things are surely to get amazing, but we'll see.

In conclusion, i think that we're just going over a slow start of the year, but it's bound to pick up sooner or later...a good time to get those old VHS tapes and DVDs.

I however keep up with CZW and can vouch for them. With their talent shares with WXW in Germany and BJW in Japan, they're doing very well. They're putting on great shows and have a few really good angles going for them. Best of the Best X is April 9th and is epexcted to be amazing, and I don't know if you're into it but Tournament of Death X is in June and is being hyped to be a great show with two Japanese deathmatch warriors Masashi Tekda and Jaki Numazawa.

But BOTB X is going to be pure awesomeness.

Thanks for the input on this topic. You have touched upon the points that keep me watching weekly.

If it weren't for guys like Davey Richards, C.M. Punk and Kurt Angle to keep me going, I'd probably turn my back on it all together. The Mexican and Japanese federations are also great viewing and I try to see what I can on YouTube.

It doesn't really change the way I feel about this Wrestlemania or the state of wrestling today, however, I keep hoping that all major wrestling companies will soon "get it right".

I was actually hopint TNA would get it right but with the sgning of Hogan & Bischoff I suspect we'll see TNAs death before Hogan's contract runs out... which is EXTREMELY unfortunate...
