Was this legit, as in it was an accident, or was it a work?

But how would they gimmick the ring to break like that and keep it protected for the entire show beforehand?

They use trap doors. After a spot like this, you'll often hear talent complaining that they were tripping over the trap door all night. I believe this to be one of those shows...
