BRM Reviews the 7/7/2011 Impact (*gasp!* it was good!)

OPENING SEGMENT- Good stuff. The one thing that bothered me was the spotlight being on Sting right away. They should have used it to look for him. Props to Bubba Ray for the George C. parker reference.

BOUND FOR GLORY SERIES MATCH: Bobby Roode vs. Crimson- 6/10

KENDRICK STOLE ABYSS’ MASK- I was under the assumption that Abyss wore it all the time.

JACK EVANS!

BRIAN KENDRICK-ABYSS SEGMENT- Good character work by Kendrick. The beatdown makes him even more of an underdog, so I’m okay with it.

X-DIVISION SHOWCASE : Jack Evans vs. Anthony Nese vs. Jesse Sorensen- 6/10. The reaction he got in and of itself should get Jack a contract.

BRITISH INVASION PROMO- good, but I have a major issue with Doug Williams’ part of it. Last year they spent an entire angle telling us that Doug Williams was anti-X-Division. That he was as much its opposite as a guy like Abyss would be… and now all of a sudden he likes the X-Division and wants to be a part of it? WTF?

STING & ANGLE BACKSTAGE- I didn’t enjoy it, but it did its job well (establishing that Kurt isn’t sure if he can trust Sting or not).

HANDICAP MATCH: Jackie & ODB vs. Velvet Sky- DUD! The work in the match wasn’t bad. This dud comes from one moment of inexplicable idiocy! In a match where her career is on the line... WHY THE HELL WOULD ODB GO FOR A CHAIR SHOT RIGHT IN FRONT OF THE REFEREE? Especially when her team is dominating the match?!

DEVON & POPE SEGMENT-GREAT!
DANIELS VIDEO PACKAGE- AWESOME!

AJ STYLES vs. ROB VAN DAM vs. JERRY LYNN vs. CHRISTOPHER DANIELS- 7/10. I marked out SO hard when RVD and Lynn went into their famous sequence!

ERIC YOUNG SEGMENT- involving a title belt in comedy will KILL it.

BOUND FOR GLORY SERIES MATCH: Matt Morgan & James Storm vs. Devon & The Pope- 5/10. I don’t see how getting Devon to trust him so that he can corrupt his kids is more important than the TNA World Heavyweight Title.

JEFF & KAREN PROMO- I’m dead sure this was supposed to be for a year, but looking back, I can’t find any reference to that at all.

HOGAN BEATS UP STING- Good, I guess, and I liked Sting not fighting back.

MAIN EVENT- no rating, because this wasn’t about the match. It was about Anderson. That being said, if they were going to do this, it should have been the semi-main event, and the 4 way should have been the main event, simply because that sells a PPV which is three days away, rather than a TV match which is a week away.

Overall, aside from the dud, this episode of Impact was actually very good.


Stupid Announcer Quotes:
1. When Bobby Roode went for “Fisherman’s Suplex” Taz and Tenay completely undersold it, because that move is “The Payoff”… BOBBY ROODE’S FINISHER!

2. Taz- “Her eyes might get ripped out of her face by those punches”- Punches do damage by the application of a PUSHING force. They won’t rip anything out of anywhere because that implies a pulling force. This might be one of the dumbest things Taz has EVER said, which takes a lot of work.

1. I too am confused by the Pope/Devon saga; besides the fact that one is a Street Preacher and the other always says "TESTIFY" (and they're both black) I don't get why these two have been given a storyline together. Maybe Pope wants to help Devon win the title so he can ask for a title shot from a "friend."

2. ODB doesn't care about winning a contract fair and square; she just wants to take it. And she wants even more to get rid of chicks like Velvet; thats why she went for the chair shot. BTW: I laughed my ass off when ODB mocked Velvet's entrance, but wiped the middle rope thoroughly beforehand ) . Its those little things she does by-the-way that makes me love her character so much; sooo funny to me.

3. I really hope Jack and/or Aries end up in TNA or on TV somewhere soon; but I think Ion is gonna win the contract. Jack is even better and more fluent than he was when he left ROH!

I'm glad you enjoyed (most of) this week's Impact (i.e. I'm glad this weeks show was actually GOOD, lol)
