BRM Reviews NJPW G1 Climax 24: Day 10

Post by Big Red Machine » Aug 6th, '14, 22:31

NJPW G1 Climax 24: Day 10 (8/6/2014)- Takamatsu, Japan

BLOCK A MATCH: Satoshi Kojima vs. Tomoaki Honma- 5.5/10

BLOCK A MATCH: Bad Luck Fale vs. Davey Boy Smith Jr. (w/TAKA Michinoku)- 5.25/10

BLOCK B MATCH: Hiroyoshi Tenzan vs. Tetsuya Naito- 7/10
Tenzan worked over Naito’s neck a lot.

BLOCK B MATCH: Karl Anderson vs. Minoru Suzuki (w/TAKA Michinoku)- 7/10

BLOCK B MATCH: Togi Makabe vs. Toru Yano- 1.25/10
Yano cheated to win in the same way he always does. The match was very short.

BLOCK B MATCH: AJ Styles vs. Yujiro Takahashi- 7.5/10
Okay at the beginning, but it really picked up towards the end.

BLOCK B MATCH: Kazuchika Okada (w/Gedo) vs. Lance Archer (w/TAKA Michinoku)- 7/10

BLOCK A MATCH: Hiroshi Tanahashi vs. Yuji Nagata- 7.5/10

BLOCK A MATCH: Tomohiro Ishii vs. Katsuyori Shibata- 7.75/10
MUCH better than last year’s crapfest. They even SOLD this time (well… more Ishii than Shibata). The “sit down and take turns kicking each other in the back” spot annoyed me for the same reason that their “take turns chopping each other” spot bothered me in their match last year. Shibata offering to fight with one hand behind his back when Ishii was selling his recently-dislocated shoulder came off as very dickish.

BLOCK A MATCH: Doc Gallows vs. Shinsuke Nakamura- 7.75/10
The best match I’ve ever seen Gallows have.

Another great G1 show, filled with good wrestling from top to bottom. Nothing was blow-away, but almost everything was great.

well, that makes 3 matches more than he should have won. I wonder if his wins were just not changed from Ibushi's booking

Honma was Ibushi's replacement, not Yano.

I really just don't get why some people are going so nuts over some of these matches, and, IMO, Meltzer has actually been the worst culprit (and yet he STILL didn't give AJ vs. Suzuki *****!). I dislike people who will watch WWE and TNA but won't watch anything smaller because it's "just indy stuff." I get pissed off at TNA fanboys who crap all over anyone else, constantly accuse WWE of "copying" TNA, and are totally blind to TNA's faults. I can't stand the people who crap all over WWE simply because it's WWE, saying that it is "sports entertainment, not real professional wrestling." But I think the people who annoy me the most are Puro snobs. "No one thought AJ Styles would be able to perform so well... blah blah blah" ARE YOU F*CKING KIDDING ME?! He's AJ STYLES!

(1) ha! all this time i thought Yano was the replacement.

(2) simply put, that was likely one of the first match a lot of people saw from NJPW, and when you have never been exposed to strong style/fighting spirit, it really looks legit and awesome. it's like when people started to discover ROH, TNA, ECW. it's the new flavor than you don't get with WWE.

Maybe, but there's also a lot of people out there who are hardcore puro fans who just overrate crap. I also don't know how much that applies to something like New Japan as opposed to Dragon Gate where there are tons of crazy things you've never seen before. That feels a lot more the like the reason people were drawn to ROH, TNA, and ECW (IMO).
I also think there are a lot of people out there (and I know because I was one of them) whose first experience with Puro turned them off to it. The first puro match I ever saw was the so-called "greatest tag team match of all time" with Misawa & Kobashi vs. Taue and Kawada from June 9, 1995. I HATED it. It went so damn long and there were so few "wrestling moves" for a 50 minute match. Coming from a background of WWE, TNA, ECW and just starting to get into ROH through guys like Dragon, Nigel, Tyler, Steen, Generico, & the Brisoes, this odd idea of just hitting someone a lot seemed strange to me. They were just legit hitting each other instead of working wrestling moves, and I think a lot of other people have also had that reaction.

it's a type of smark, just like those that used to say that indy was the best just because it wasn't WWE, or that WWE is the best because they have 'production value' and think giving credit to Cena makes them look smart. with other companies like Dragon Gate, NOAH, or even DDT, i think it's just them being harder to find, consider that these fans are not necessarily the ones that put money out there.

that is completely understandable, i had a hard time getting to ROH first because i was watching Brent Albright and BJ Whitmer matches, good for us that we gave these promotions or styles another shot. Sadly it's usually these people that will hate the most on those promotions because without giving them a second chance, they feel that by watching one match, they know about such promotions. I once got in a flamewar with a guy saying 'Lucha Libre has no psychology" because of this.
