For the first time since 2000, The Headbangers will be appearing as a team on WWE television.

According to Dave Meltzer, the veteran team is scheduled to compete on next Tuesday's edition of SmackDown from Dallas, TX as part of the tournament to crown the brand's first tag team champions of the new era.

The tournament was announced at the beginning of last Tuesday's SmackDown, with American Alpha, The Usos, The Hype Bros, Breezango, The Ascension, and The Vaudevillains originally completing the field.

But it was expanded when Heath Slater's free agency storyline was furthered. Slater was given the chance to enter the tournament if he could find a partner. He formed a team with Rhyno, which meant that another team would be included as well. If Slater and Rhyno win the entire tournament, Slater will be added to the SmackDown roster.

The Headbangers (Mosh and Thrasher) briefly held the WWF Tag Team Championship in 1997. The team was disbanded in 2000 after Thrasher was released, and Mosh met the same fate a year later. They reunited as a team on the independent scene in 2011 and have made sporadic indie appearances, along with a few appearances for Ring of Honor, since.

The duo announced on social media yesterday that they were scheduled to compete in the tournament.

There's your eighth team.
When they come, they'll come at what you love.

Hopefully just a one off in order to put over whomever their opponents are.

Anything more would be a stupid decision.
Have A Nice Day!

I'm sure that's exactly what it is (and that their opponents will be Slater & Rhyno). I'm just annoyed that they've decided that they need two tag divisions and so their roster is so thin that they're bringing back the f*cking headbangers to fill a spot in a tournament for the tag titles. In 2016.

Did you know that the last time the Headbangers were WWF World Tag Team Champions...
- Steve Austin, Triple H and The Rock had won a combined total of ZERO world titles
- Kane hadn't even debuted yet
- CZW had not been founded
- Liv Morgan had just turned THREE. Lio Rush hadn't even turned three yet.
- Triple H was still dating CHYNA, who had yet to wrestle a match in a WWF ring
- It would be over a year before either John Cena, Kurt Angle, or Hiroshi Tanahashi started training to be a professional wrestler. Slightly less than a year for AJ Styles, Low Ki, and Kazarian.
- Stephanie McMahon was still in college
- Top up-and-comers on the indies included Ace Darling, Devon Storm, Lance (Simon) Diamond, Mike Quackenbush, Reckless Youth, and Erin O'Grady (Crash Holly).
- Edge had just signed a WWF developmental deal. Christian had not even been signed yet
- the Hardy Boys were nothing but jobbers on WWF TV. Lita hadn't even started training yet.
- the Black T-Shirt Squad hadn't formed yet
- Rikishi was still "The Sultan"
- the nWo was still a hot, fresh, angle. Hogan vs. Sting at Starrcade had not yet happened
- OVW was still several years away from becoming a WWF developmental territory
- It would be even longer than that before Nattie and TJ started dating.
- It would be even longer than that before Kevin Steen/Owens and El Generico/Sami Zayn met for the first time
- CM Punk and Colt Cabana had not yet met, either
- Nor had AJ Styles and Christopher Daniels. AJ wasn't even in the business yet.
- TJ PERKINS hadn't even started training yet!
- Mark Henry had just celebrated his first anniversary in the wrestling business. Big Show had just celebrated his second.
- Yuji Nagata was on his learning excursion
- D-Generation X was so new it didn't even have a name yet.
- Bill Goldberg's official WCW record was 3-0
- the Montreal Screwjob hadn't happened

Well, looks like I'm the only one excited about the Headbangers. :(
