NJPW owner Takaaki Kidani explained why the company is running two G1 specials in California in July: "The reason why we decided to go to US is what WWE did to us one years ago. I'm really frustrated. That's the reason." Kidani is referring to WWE signing AJ Styles, Shinsuke Nakamura, Karl Anderson, and Luke Gallows after last year’s Tokyo Dome show.

yeah, i have a vague memory of that, i think that at one point WWE wanted to use NJPW as they do with EVOLVE

Something there must not quite have gone right, I think, and caused some sort of bad blood. And now that you mention that about EVOLVE, it's possible that WWE aggressively pursuing the New Japan Four was their attempt at punishing New Japan for not working with them, which would certainly make Kidani's feelings seem a lot more justified (not just what he said here but also his previous "you're either with WWE or you're against them" comments, too).
