Cero Reviews Lucha Underground: The Re-watch EP4

Post by cero2k » Nov 7th, '15, 11:00

So now that LU season 1 is officially over, my life is meaningless, so in order to stay alive, i'm going to start re-watching LU from the beginning, evaluating subtle hints, things that were never payed off, build up that I missed. etc. I don't have to say, but I'll be spoiling a lot of future shows in case you haven't seen them. I won't rate matches with numbers, but I'll try to find a word that describes my feeling for the match.
EP 4: Thrill of the Hunt
First night of Lucha Underground with the now traditional live band.

Sexy Star promo - She cuts a promo on Chavo Guerrero in spanish, he tells Chavo that she is gonna kick his ass and end the Guerrero Dynasty . Good promo, but now one should ever say that they'll end the Guerrero Dynasty in a latino community.

Ivelisse promo - She is the baddest bitch in this building.

Sexy Star vs Ivelisse - GOOD
Vampiro quickly says that this is 'Anti-Diva'. It's weird how a women's match feels in Lucha Underground, they're just not that common. The matches wasn't bad or botchy, but there was a bit of off-timing between then, I think Sexy is so used to selling to the crowd while Ivelisse is coming from the WWE/US Indie school right now.

Drago/Dario Cueto backstage segment - Dario tells Drago that he didn't lose nor win, so he wants to see more, so he books Drago vs the debut of King Cuerno!

Pentagon Jr promo - Awesome, way to realistic promo. Pentagon Jr thanks Cueto because in Mexico no one respects him and thanks to him, he'll get respect. Waaay to real of a promo.

Pentagon Jr vs Fenix - THIS IS AWESOME!
One year from now, this match could be main eventing any show in the world, or at least should be the season 2 Ultima Lucha main event in my opinion. It's also interesting to think that at this point, you could tell that Pentagon wasn't their priority in pushing and showcasing. If WWE ever wants to recreate what they had in Rey Mysterio, it's not Kalisto, or Sin Cara, or La Sombra who they need, it's Fenix.

King Cuerno Vignette - Awesome. First time I watched King Cuerno, i had no idea who was behind the mask, and I can't believe how wrong I was about him, as he becomes one of my favorite of the show.

Drago vs King Cuerno - GREAT
Everything was great except Cuerno trying to rake the bracelet brasses on Drago's mask. I truly believe that Cuerno may have the best tope suicida in the business ever. Drago steals the match and officially, The Hunt Is ON!!!

Prince Puma/Konnan segment - Konnan tells Puma to stay out of the main event tonight between Mundo and Ryck.

Johnny Mundo vs Big Ryck - GREAT
During this match i noticed that there is a Fenix tag in the temple. Mid match we cut to the back and the Crew is attacking Prince Puma, then they come out and attack Johnny Mundo giving him the DQ win. They gang up on Mundo and put him through a table to the ring, Puma never came out. The match was great, but not as good as the previous two matches, but I totally understand this had the most storyline repercussions to it.

FINAL THOUGHTS: I think the biggest thing to take away from this show is King Cuerno's involvement. First time I saw this episode, i definitely did not catch on what a big deal he is for Lucha Underground, from the title of the show and who is under his mask.

I think season 2 is too early for this. This season (or at least a large part of it) needs to be about defeating Mil Muertes- which Fenix has been set up as the perfect guy to do. With Pentagon Jr., I'd actually keep him out of the ring for a while and focus on whatever journey Vampiro is taking him on. Maybe even keep him out of the temple the entire season until Ultima Lucha when he runs out after the main event and spoils Fenix's victory by breaking his arm.

i think with enough time, Fenix should capture the title say 2/3 into the season, and Pentagon could come back the final third and become no 1 contender, via medallions or just kicking the shit out of Fenix. Mil Muertes wasn't really into title contention until the end of season 1 if you think about it

I think it's a question of how they want to leave off each season. What will be the cliffhanger? Some big injustice or dark time for our heroes is a great way to do this. The question is whether or not they always want that to be with a newly-crowned strong heel champ. I figure they'd want to avoid doing the same thing for the first two seasons, so I'd have the babyface win at the end of season two, but then do some grave injustice (i.e. the arm-breaking) afterwards.
