BRM Reviews the 3/16/2016 Lucha Underground (very important)

FENIX & CATRINA BACKSTAGE- didn’t like it, mostly because of how painful Catrina’s monologue was. On the bright side, she did make an interesting comment about how Fenix’s death would restore her to life or something like that, so that seems to confirm that she is some sort of spirit and not a living person with superpowers.

TITLE VS. CAREER MATCH FOR THE LUCHA UNDERGROUND TRIOS TITLES: The Disciples of Death(titles) (w/Catrina) vs. Son of Havoc, Ivelisse, & Angelico (careers)- 6.25/10
This really feels like the sort of stip that should necessitate and a main event. Either way, the match was good for the time it got.

We’re also getting Chavo vs. Texano in a Bullrope match. Has that even been mentioned before?

PRINCE PUMA & JOHNNY MUNDO BACKSTAGE- great
Prince Puma is training. Johnny Mundo showed up to annoy him and also to hype Aztec Warfare. I burst out laughing when he mentioned Puma’s “giraffe tights.” Mundo was SOOOO awesome here. There was nothing in the world I wanted more than to see this segment end with Puma kicking the punching bag into Johnny’s face, knocking him on his ass.

REY MYSTERIO JR. & DRAGON AZTECA JR. SEGMENT- SOOOOO EXCITING!
Dragon Azteca’s training is complete! Rey gives him an envelope sealed with the same seal found on the ring in the Temple! It’s an invitation to compete in Aztec Warfare! AND REY HAS ONE, TOO!

BULLROPE MATCH: Texano Jr. vs. Chavo Guerrero Jr. (w/the Crew)- 5.75/10
Short but fun and still managed to feel significant.
The first spot in this match was The Crew abandoning Chavo… and the facial expressions of both Chavo in Texano from the point that the Crew walks out to the point that punches start being thrown were just plain perfection.
Speaking of things that were pretty darn perfect in this match… how about Vampiro? That one innocuous little line after Striker mentioned Vamp imagining violence: “yeah, but I’m on my meds so I’m good, dawg” was a perfectly natural and yet effective reminder about the “Vampiro needs his meds” storyline to keep it fresh in our minds without them having to spend time focusing on it.

MIL MUERTES BEATS UP THE DISCIPLES OF DEATH FOR LOSING- Catrina tells him to spare them.
Okay… can someone give me a kayfabe explanation for why the electricity effect doesn’t happen when the Disciples are in front of a live crowd?

DARIO, BLACK LOTUS & MATANZA ARE HEADING BACK TO THE TEMPLE!!!!!!
OMFG can you imagine how awesome it would be for Matanza to be the last guy in Aztec Warfare and show up and just start murderizing people?!
AND WE FINALLY GET TO SEE MATANZA! And it is SOOOOO worth it. He looks like a cross between a slightly toned down version of Bane’s body and Killer Croc’s bloodlust. SO AWESOME! Also, I hope the heavy drums background music they had playing during this reveal turns out to also be Matanza’s entrance music.

LUCHA UNDERGROUND TITLE MATCH: Mil Muertes(c) (w/Catrina) vs. Fenix- 7.25/10
Vampiro talks about how Catrina has brainwashed Mil and “done things to him” and it seems to me that even if he is correct, he is completely talking out of his ass because the announcers in LU don’t see backstage segments, so he has absolutely no evidence of anything.
Hidden text.
Did not see that result coming. I let out quite the loud “HOLY SH*T!” when it happened.
CATRINA POST-MATCH PROMO- so Aztec Warfare will now be for the title. Fenix will come in at #1, Mil Muertes will come in at #20 (which I believe is the same as last year).

A great show from LU. It was lots of fun and very momentous. I can’t wait for next week.

There has been a lot of talk the she was either a really old witch or an old ghost, I have even heard speculation that she could be the ghost of Cueto's mother

Not sure if it was the show or the comic book, but there was a hint that maybe Pentagon and Catrina could have a past, but it could be the case that it's Vampiro and Catrina that have this past and Vampiro simply educated Pentagon on it

She even mentioned something that it would be tradition for Fenix to start and Muertes to be last

Can't be Cueto's mother. The two of them have interacted before.
