BRM Reviews the 11/1/2012 Impact

Post by Big Red Machine » Nov 2nd, '12, 10:48

OPENING SEGMENT- all just a set up for Sting announcing that a member of Aces & Eights would get his mask ripped off tonight.

TARA & JESSE BACKSTAGE- Jesse isn't part of the roster, so why does he have to answer ODB's challenge?

MAGNUS CALLS OUT JOE- he basically says the same things he said before their match at BFG

SAMOA JOE vs. MAGNUS- no rating. Decent segment. They wrestle a bit until Magnus hits Joe with a wrench causing a DQ, hopefully setting up for a match at Turning Point.

ANGLE, STING, & HOGAN BACKSTAGE- KURT gets Devon at the PPV? Not Bully? They should have Devon screw Bubba tonight, then have another Aces & Eights guy jump Kurt tonight. Kurt's heat is with the group, not with Devon specifically.

SAMOA JOE PROMO- great

JEFF HARDY PROMO- dumb.

DANIELS & KAZ CALL OUT THE SPANISH ANNOUNCE TEAM- this is where Open Fight Night stops making sense. You can call out someone who isn't a contracted wrestler? So if someone decided that he hated one of the ring crew guys or the popcorn vendors, he could just call him out and destroy him? Aside from this logical hiccup in its foundation, a pretty good segment.

CHRISTIAN YORK VIDEO PACKAGE- great

CHRISTIAN YORK vs. ZEMA ION- 4/10
Good match, but York didn't look particularly impressive. He does a bunch of stuff a whole lot of other people can do, but he did it much slower.

AUSTIN ARIES PROMO- good

GARRETT BISCHOFF PROMO- entirely unnecessary. We have heard it said sixty-three times over the past few months that "the entire roster is united against Aces & Eights blah blah blah" so why do we need this here? Oh. Okay. It is an excuse to cut to a freakin' West Side Story-style rumble with both gangs walking towards each other in an alley. All we were missing was the snapping.

ODB CALLS OUT JESSE GODERZ-3/10
JESSE ISN'T ON THE ROSTER!
WHOA! Spike TV let ODB take a bodyslam! Color me surprised (granted, if Spike was going to allow man-on-woman violence TNA should have used it with Aces & Eights and Brooke Hogan, but that is just typical TNA failure: save everything for the reality TV stars). Anyway, they pretty much did the same spots all over again and the match just wasn't interesting.

BOO! Tenay is back! The first sentence he says after wishing people well to people like me (i.e. people left powerless by this hurricane) and it has already pissed me off (he said something like "let's not forget the promise of the bully- Bully Ray.")

ROBBIE E. PROMO- AWESOME!

JEFF HARDY vs. ROBBIE E. (w/Robbie T.)- DUD!
Simply because it took the world champion (who, as Tenay moronically reminded us, was prepared to compete tonight), five minutes to beat a guy who has been regularly being squashed by everyone else in two minutes.

ARIES & HARDY SEGMENT- GREAT! I agree that it is too soon for the ladder match (Aries still deserves his own rematch before having to be stuck in Hardy's match), but I like the concept. The whole two belts thing goes back to Shawn and Razor.

HULK HOGAN & MATT MORGAN IN THE STORE- so Morgan steals something and Hogan just lets him walk away?

HULK HOGAN & JAMES STORM SEGMENT- lame. Didn't Hulk say he had something for Storm LAST WEEK?

BOBBY ROODE PROMO- good

HOGAN PROMO- Hogan says that AJ and Roode both deserve a title shot. What the hell have either of these guys done? Anyway, I will give them credit for coming up with what I can only describe as a BIG stipulation for the match at Turning Point, although this really sucks for James Storm.

AJ STYLES vs. BOBBY ROODE- or not. Apparently we're not getting this match. Anyone else remember LAST MONTH when Bobby Roode got called out but didn't want the match, so Hogan threatened to suspend him without pay? So why did Hogan not do that here? Why does Roode get to avoid the match this month?

MATT MORGAN & JOEY RYAN PROMO- is Morgan on the roster or not? Either way, great promos by both guys.

ROB VAN DAM vs. JOEY RYAN (w/Matt Morgan)- no rating. Good segment. I like what they are setting up for here. They are going to put the X-Division Title on Ryan (and get it off of Van Dam) while giving Morgan a high-profile feud with Van Dam.

BULLY RAY CALLS OUT DEVON- if this is such a big deal to him, why did Bully Ray wait all night?
So Bully Ray is facing down forty-seven guys all on his own and the babyfaces come out and stride down to the ring with a purpose. One of your coworkers on this "united" roster is facing down unbeatable odds. Don't run or anything, guys. This wasn't a bad segment, but the announcing at the end really killed it. "I recognize that guy! He's been an enforcer for some of the biggest names in the business!" That's great, Tenay, but he can't be that big a deal if he doesn't have a freakin' name!
Compare this to Test's brief appearance in TNA 2007. The announcers went "OMFG that's ANDREW MARTIN!" People who recognized him as Test said "oh. It's Test." People who didn't went and looked him up on the net, and then said "oh. It's Test." To say that he is a big deal and then not say his name just comes off ridiculous.

Overall, this episode of Impact wasn't good in the ring, but really felt like a good show.

STUPID ANNOUNCER QUOTES:
1. Tenay- "Well I guess you've got to give Robbie E. credit for having the guts to call out the world champion but I'm not sure his timing is so great. We overheard earlier the Charismatic Enigma knowing that he's a target. Jeff Hardy; well he knows that anyone can call him out. He says he's ready to compete. Prepared. And on a moment's notice, Jeff Hardy is here to answer the challenge."
First of all, we didn't "overhear" anything. Jeff was talking directly to us. We HEARD. Even worse, though, is the rest of Tenay's stupidity here. Robbie E's timing isn't good because he is calling out someone who knows that he might have to fight tonight? With the number of matches made on the fly, every wrestler should be ready to compete when he shows up to the arena, even if he or she doesn't have a match already scheduled! And I love how Tenay makes a big deal out of the fact that Jeff knows that he might be called out on Open Fight Night. After six months, Jeff damn well better understand how the concept works! Overall, what Tenay has said here is that Jeff Hardy is of at least average intelligence, and that therefore Robbie. E. made a mistake by calling him out. Can we have Keneley back yet?

2. Tenay says (paraphrasing) that 'there is no better time for Bubba to call Devon out because the Open Fight Night Rules mean that Devon has to fight.' Umm... Bobby Roode didn't have to fight AJ, and that was less than half an hour ago.
