BRM reviews the 5/19/11 Impact (a guide on how to lose fans)

Post by Big Red Machine » May 21st, '11, 12:39

OPENING SEGMENT- Oh G-d. Eric Bischoff in a match. Ugg I’m not sure how I feel about this as a whole. It used the X-Division guys, but it made them look weak, as they needed Fortune to save their asses. On the one hand, I don’t think they should look weak… on the other hand, I think that, next to Fortune, they should. It furthered the Flair-Rude thing, too, so that was good.

A limo has pulled up, and Tenay tells us it is Sting,… but it doesn’t look like anything Sting has ever worn. It is obviously Anderson’s surprise.

SARITA, ROSITA, & MADISON RAYNE vs. TARA, MICKIE JAMES, & MISS TESSMACHER- 4/10. Interesting finish

The cameraman is following the guy who is supposedly Sting who got out of the limo… but apparently has decided to only film his legs for some reason. Why is it that every other time, they don’t film the guy’s legs?! (unless the usual cameraman is sick, and their sub is midget, but I’m pretty sure that isn’t the case) This is the sort of logical flaw that, to me, poops all over kayfabe!

X-DIVISION TITLE MATCH: Kazarian(c) vs. Abyss- 4.5/10 Too short, especially for a title match!

SAMOA JOE vs. AMAZING RED- Sqaush. BOOO! I also didn’t like Joe beating Red up after the match. It doesn’t fit in with his character. He is out for himself. He won’t make the save for someone, but he wouldn’t beat someone down for no reason.

AJ-DREAMER SEGMENT- GREAT segment, and an AWESOME promo by Tommy Dreamer!

ANGLE-JARRETT SEGMENT- Good, until the stuff with Karen & Velvet. That was just dumb .

GEN. ME SEGMENT- FINALLY! A segment that actually SHOWS a reconciliation!

ERIC BISCHOFF & MATT HARDY vs. GENERATION ME- 4/10

WINTER & ANGELINA BACKSTAGE- interesting
I hated Christy introducing Velvet as “at a disadvantage”- We’re not morons! We can see that there is one of Velvet, and two of her opponents! Give you audience some credit! We’re not all as dumb as you. I also hated her introducing Velvet as “a Knockout favorite.” She should be objective and impartial.

HANDICAP MATCH: Winter & Angelina Love vs. Velvet Sky- 4/10 (although I assume that someone who doesn’t like this angle as much as I do could go lower). After the match, ODB returns and randomly attacks Velvet. Despite her assaulting the babyface who they were cheering for two minutes ago, the fans decide to cheer for ODB. Morons.

EY & TESSMACHER- dumb.
WHAT THE F*CK IS GOING ON? They are talking about some match last week that didn’t even happen! Are they f*cking morons! Did they not double check what happened on the last show before booking this one? What a bunch of irredeemable BRAIN-DEAD MORONS!

RIC FLAIR CALLS OUT BOBBY ROODE- not good. It wasn’t bad, either, but it just didn’t seem to make sense with all of the hate over the past few months, and it didn’t feel anywhere near as big as it should have.
Heel beatdown once again. Doesn’t this company know ANY other way to get heat?
Oh G-d. Not the “WHAT?” chants here, too.

ENDING SEGMENT- Utter crap. Sting tells us that RVD “took him to the limit” at Sacrifice. If THAT is Sting’s limit, he shouldn’t be the champ. Then he tells us pretty much the same thing that he told us in a random promo earlier, in almost the exact same words. Then the lights go out, and Mr. Anderson dressed as Sting (which everyone aside from Tenay saw coming) apparently now has access to Sting’s powers of either teleportation or night vision, so he pops up behind Sting and attacks him.

This episode of Impact was UTTER SH*T!

Over the last week, TNA has been insisting to us that in TNA “wrestling matters.” And then they go and give us four short, sh*tty matches, and a popular babyface getting squashed. The main event is a four-minute handicap match, and ended a good fifteen minutes before the end of the show itself, with TWO other in-ring confrontations coming after it. Does anyone really believe TNA? At all?

The whole situation with EY and the TV Title is just plain unforgivable. It is ridiculous. I checked Wikipedia to make sure that I hadn’t somehow missed the match, and it said that the title change in question happened on Tuesday, not last Thursday (so the change hadn’t happened on the date they were referring to not because it hadn’t aired yet… but because IT HADN’T ACTUALLY HAPPENED YET!), and that it will air on next week’s Impact! So the only way that this segment makes any sense is if they taped it for TWO WEEKS FROM NOW, and accidentally played it TWO WEEKS EARLY! That is INEXCUSABLE! Show your fans the courtesy to at least WATCH this sh*tpile for “proofreading” before your air it! I have absolutely HATED TNA at times, and have been furious at them for bad angles, logic that doesn’t makes sense, and hypocrisy, but as a wrestling fan, this one takes the cake. Bad angles and bad logic is just the company being stupid. This is the company NOT SHOWING ANY RESPECT FOR ITS FANS.
EDIT: I read EY's Wikipeadia article, and that cleared this up a bit. During the battle royale last week, EY walked out with Gunner's title after eliminating him. So EY only THINKS that he is currently the champion. The problem is that there was NO INDICATION OF THIS WHATSOEVER! Gunner never mentioned it at all, nor did the announcers (you know, the guys who are supposed to PROVIDE EXPOSITION FOR THE AUDIENCE!) Either way, it is unacceptable on TNA's part. If Taz & Tenay aren't doing their jobs (never mind doing them well, but this is a case of NOT DOING THEM AT ALL), then they need to be replaced.

Stupid announcer quotes:
1. Taz “When you’re Hulk Hogan, you can do what you want, how you want, the way you want. He runs this place, the Hulkster”- apparently not, if Mick Foley can make decisions and Hogan is forced to obey them.

2. Tenay keeps calling the boots out of the limo a “signature look” and for that reason assumes that it is Sting- WHEN THE HELL HAS STING EVER WORN THOSE COLORS? Not in at least 15 years! And never with the scorpion logo! What an idiot!

3. Tenay (about Mexican America)- “I have never seen a group that is so united. Talk about ‘familia’. Everywhere that Sarita & Rosita go, you guys are there, and every time that you’re competing, they’re with you at ringside” Yeah. Because no other stable in history has ever done that. I honestly think that Tenay is pushing home this point JUST so he can say “familia,” which is pathetic.

4. Tenay- “WHAT HAPPENED THERE?! One second he was favoring the injured leg and injured knee, then… oh G-D! A Black Hole Slam!” So “professor” Tenay has never seen anyone play possum before?

5. Tenay keeps talking up “Bischoff’s master plan to totally abolish the X-Division from Impact Wrestling,” and keeps saying that winning tonight’s matches are steps 1, 2, & 3 in that plan. If Bischoff wanted to get rid of the X-Division…. Why doesn’t he just fire the X-division guys? We know that he can fire people, because, apparently, he has threatened Tommy Dreamer with being fired if he didn’t piledrive AJ.

actually during the 25 man elimination match, EY jumped over the ropes 2 times, outside on the apron and back in, then eliminated himself, Gunner was on the ground, EY walked over and took his belt, Gunner went after him and EY ran off

other then that, yeah it seemed to be pretty shity show, and when did the "Professor" become so damn stupid?

TNA (and WWE/F for that matter) Should really listen to the fans and not the plants

on that note

they should let us random WR people run it for a month at a time :D

Well I didn't think that it was too bad, but I thought the opening segment was pretty good with the X-Division standing up to Immortal

I'm still a fan and always will be and I'm not jumping off the bandwagon anytime soon

Sorry ROH Fans, but that's the way it goes

Okay, be satisfied with shitty wrestle and refuse to watch good wrestling for NO reason whatsoever? I don't understand "the way it goes."

Though I don't agree with WWF on the ROH fans statement, I do agree that this episode of iMPACT! wasn't bad at all.

I didn't like Bischof being in a match, but at least he stayed out of the ring until the very end of the match.

I liked the EY segment a LOT; Very funny stuff, really played up EY's delusions. Also, when he told Tessmacher "this is something Orlando showed me in our studio apartment" I laughed my ass off!

@BRM:
1) I think they were only filming the legs of the Sting impersonator TO MAKE THE FANS BELIEVE IT WAS STING IN HIS OLD GEAR; as I watched, I was expecting Sting to come out with the white hair (I figured it was for the first official episode of IMPACT! Wrestling). If they would have shown Anderson, the cat would have been out of the bag. P.S., that costume looks EXACTLY like something Sting has/would wear.

2) The fans aren't Morons for cheering ODB; they're genuinely happy to see her back. Since when is it protocol for the FANS to follow kayfabe? They cheer who they like.

3) Joe wouldn't attack someone for no reason? Are you kidding me? Do you not remember him beating the hell out of Daniels after a match where he and Daniels' team WON? Besides, there IS a reason he beat down Red: TO SEND A MESSAGE TO CRIMSON! Joe is obviously tired of hearing about Crimson's "undefeated Streak" which is nothing compared to his own. It is the obvious fuel for their feud.

4) I'm surprised you reviewed this episode without watching the one from the previous week; then it would have been obvious what the Gunner/EY segment was all about. It's actually a very entertaining feud brewing between the two, imo. EY being his usual, delusional self and claiming to be the champ. It's typical, "vintage" EY; I don't understand why you don't enjoy it (besides being uninformed initially).

5) I can't disagree with most of your other criticisms, but I will say that those things are relatively UNIMPORTANT. Who cares how Hemme introduces the competitors? We already know who they are; her choice of words changes nothing and does nothing to affect the show for me.

Anyone who HASN'T actually watched the 5/19 episode should watch it for themselves; I think the ep was a LOT better than the show usually is and (for the most part) I disagree with BRM's critiques. I mean, we all know that Christy Hemme isn't a great ring announcer, and Taz and Tenay are idiots; but those things don't really ruin a show, esp when you've got good action and good promos. Also, something like filming someone's feet is bad camera work when TNA does it, yet when they did it to tease the guest host of WM, no one had a problem with it. I def don't see how the show would "lose viewers" based on this episode.

I did find it funny. I thought it was a bit of a waste of time, but it was funny. I am probably the biggest EY fan on this forum. My problem was once Gunner showed up (not even that he showed up, that was good), but that I had no idea what the hell they were talking about. They were talking about last week's episode of Impact, which I watched, and even read through my review for notes that this match might have happened, as well as many other sources for SOME mention of EY winning the title, and there was no mention of it at all. THAT is where my problem was. I got lost, and I think that many others did, too. EY is not the TV Champion. It is Taz and Tenay's job to tell us that EY is being delusional. They failed at it. THIS is where bad announcing can really hurt a show. When the necessary exposition is not there.

1. I understand this. My point is that it makes no kayfabe sense for them to do this. For the Guest Host of Wrestlemania, the people in charge of the camera are the people kayfabe in charge. Vince (assumedly) gave special instructions for that instance to not spoil the surprise until then. Here, Anderson has no kayfabe authority, and they would not know that he is coming dressed as Sting, so they wouldn't know to start with the camera low down.

2. She just assaulted someone whom they were cheering for. It wasn't a welcome back chant. As for it being protocol for fans to follow kayfabe... I think that it should be, but people's right to free speech trumps that.

3. I remember it, but this isn't that Joe. Character's develop. This isn't monster heel Joe looking to make a name for himself in TNA. This just doesn't fit at all with Joe's actions over the past few years (IMO).

4. It wasn't obvious, and I did watch last week's Impact (see my review, & my above point). As I said above, I love EY and his comedy wrestling (as well as when he is serious).

5. Announcer's are supposed to be objective and neutral. Having Christie do that hurt's the image of a kayfabe sport, which is what we are watching.

I am not even saying that she is a bad ring announcer (and she is leaps and bounds better than JB).

Vickie is at least entertaining in my book. That thing when her shoe fell off and she tried to use it like a sword was pretty funny. Karen has only interfered in matches in a few matches and gotten crap dumped on her. I wouldnt go as far as to say she's got anywhere near as much heat as Vickie gets each time she comes out. Anytime you hear EXCUSE ME the place explodes in boo's. That is when you KNOW someone is over as a heel.....
